This course is an introduction and general review of the<br />

learning of a second language: principles and priorities<br />

and learning; the approach to listening and reading;<br />
<strong>de</strong>velopment of oral and written proficiency; teaching<br />

This course has been <strong>de</strong>signed for stu<strong>de</strong>nts who are<br />
in<strong>de</strong>pen<strong>de</strong>nt users of the English language. The course<br />
aims to <strong>de</strong>velop stu<strong>de</strong>nts’ knowledge and skills at the<br />
low-advanced level (C1), according to the Common<br />
European Framework of Reference (CEF). It focuses<br />
on <strong>de</strong>veloping stu<strong>de</strong>nts ability to write in aca<strong>de</strong>mic<br />
English, through themes relating to global issues. After<br />
the course, stu<strong>de</strong>nts will un<strong>de</strong>rstand a wi<strong>de</strong> range<br />
of <strong>de</strong>manding, longer texts, and recognize implicit<br />
meaning. They should be able to express themselves<br />
fluently and spontaneously without much obvious<br />
searching for expressions. They should be able to use<br />
language flexibly and effectively for social, aca<strong>de</strong>mic,<br />
and professional purposes. Stu<strong>de</strong>nts should also<br />
be able to produce clear, well-structured, <strong>de</strong>tailed<br />
text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of<br />
organizational patterns, connectors, and cohesive<br />
<strong>de</strong>vices. In sum, stu<strong>de</strong>nts will acquire the competencies<br />
they require to continue with their formal education<br />
in this foreign language, as part of their respective<br />

APRECIACIÓN MUSICAL<br />
Este curso se encuentra <strong>de</strong>stinado al estudio y audición<br />
participativa e intuitiva <strong>de</strong> obras musicales <strong>de</strong> los<br />
periodos barroco, clásico, romántico, contemporáneo,<br />
nacionalista e impresionista. Los estudiantes tienen la<br />
oportunidad <strong>de</strong> apren<strong>de</strong>r a reconocer los principales<br />
ritmos populares, folclóricos y clásicos <strong>de</strong> la música<br />
<strong>de</strong> Costa Rica. A<strong>de</strong>más <strong>de</strong> i<strong>de</strong>ntificar los estilos y<br />
clasificaciones musicales, los estudiantes pue<strong>de</strong>n<br />
<strong>de</strong>sarrollar competencias críticas y ampliar su bagaje<br />
