TRANSVULCANIA 2011 SALOMON NATURETRAILS MOUNTAIN ULTRAMARATHON ON LA PALMA May, 7th, 2011 The Transvulcania, which has been considered by many people as the most challenging ultramarathon in the Canary Islands and one of the most in Spain, was born with the purpose of promoting the natural heritage of La Palma through hiking and active leisure in nature A network of hiking paths, which fullfill international requirements, stretching over more than 1000 kilometres, on the one hand, and an exceptional varied natural environment, on the other hand, have made up one of the most attractive places any participant in an ultramarathon could dream of while running across the most emblematic hiking path on the island, the so-called Ruta del Bastón (the walking stick hiking tour) GR 131, and across the following nature reserves: – Site of special scientific interest of the saltpans in Fuencaliente. – The Cumbre Vieja Nature park. – The Las Nieves Nature Park. – The Caldera de Taburiente National Park. – The las Angustias ravine protected landscape. MODALITIES ULTRAMARATHON Starting point is the lighthouse on the coast of Fuencaliente. It covers the whole longdistance hiking path GR 131-“Ruta del Bastón” (walking stick hiking tour) up to the port of Tazacorte. At this point it converges with the other long-distance hiking path existing on the island, the GR 130 or “Camino Real de la Costa” which will take participants up to the finishing point at the Plaza de España in Los Llanos de Aridane. With a total of 83.3 kilometers and a total height difference of 8525 meters, this modality demands that its participants be in good physical condition and have previously trained. MEDIAMARATHON Going along the emblematic Volcano Route, this modality is less demanding than the Ultramarathon as it only covers the first 26.8 kilometres of its total distance, starting at the lighthouse of Fuencaliente and finishing at the Refugio del Pilar picnic area. As it goes in reverse direction as it normally does, implying thus an uphill difference in level across rugged and rough areas covered by lava flows, it is more demanding as it usually is. TRANSVULCANIA KIDS - JUNIOR With the already mentioned purpose of the Transvulcania, that is, to promote the natural heritage of the island and to be in touch with it, Transvulcania gives minors and their families the possibility to join this sport event in the midst of nature, along some of the hiking paths of La Palma At the Refugio de El Pilar camping area, finishing line of the Transvulcania Mediamarathon 2010 and point where participants of the Transvulcania 2010 Ultramarathon are supplied with some food and water, there will be a circuit for this modality. Different sport events, depending on distances and categories, would be organized. FOTOGRAFÍAS /PHOTOGRAPHS: Superior izquierda: Sendero GR 131. Above left: The GR 131 trekking track.
