En este trabajo se hará énfasis en la caracterización del régimen
presidido por Hugo Chávez, de seguidas se analizará a la oposición
que le ha hecho frente, luego se considerará su política
internacional, especialmente en relación con Estados Unidos y,
finalmente, se abordarán las fases que ha atravesado el gobierno
venezolano hasta 2006. Se argumentará que el régimen de Chávez
no es un proyecto revolucionario, en el sentido marxista de la
expresión, sino una variante del militarismo de izquierda, populista
y corrupto. Su principal resultado, que lo acerca a la práctica
de las revoluciones socialistas, pero que es una característica
de la estructura económica, política e institucional de Venezuela,
es el crecimiento desmesurado de las funciones del Estado.

This article seeks to make an assessment of the regime in Venezuela
under Hugo Chávez and it also presents an analysis of the
political opposition. Further, it considers the international political
development, particularly relations with the U.S. Finally, it
highlights the distinct phases through which the Venezuelan government
has passed up until 2006. It is argued that the Chávez
regime is not a revolutionary project in the Marxist sense, but
rather a leftist, populist and corrupt version of militarism. Its main
effect, which resembles the practices of the socialist revolutions,
but which is instead a trait of the Venezuelan economic, political
and institutional structure, is the immoderate growth of the functions
of the State.
