SUMMARYJesús Carrera was born in Vigo (Spain) in 1957. He is married and has got threechildren. He obtained the degree of Civil Engineer by the Technical University ofMadrid in 1979 and worked as a structural engineer at “Dragados y Construcciones”until he moved to the University of Arizona. There, he got his Ph D in Hydrology (1984)and worked as hydrogeologist at HydroGeoChem, inc. He then moved to the TechnicalUniversity of Catalonia (<strong>UPC</strong>), where he became full professor in 1992. He has beenvicedean (1986-1989) and dean (1992-1994) of Civil Engineering and vicepresident(1994-1998) for research of the university. He has co-authored more than 200publications, including more than 30 in international refereed journals. After his returnto Spain, he created a research group in groundwater hydrology that has grown toabout 25 people and is recognized as an Associate Unit by CSIC (Spanish researchagency) because of its collaboration with “Jaume Almera” Institute for Earth Sciences.Since July 2006 he works as Reseach Professor at the Institute of EnvironmentalAssessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC).Research of this group has concentrated on groundwater modeling with emphasis onthe inverse problem (estimation of groundwater parameters so as to make sure thatmodel simulations reproduce actual measurements) and reactive transport (simulatethe movement of contaminants in aquifers including chemical reactions with othersolutes and the solid phase). They have developed codes for inverse modeling of flow(INVERT), flow and transport (TRANSIN), conjunctive management of surface andgroundwater (COGERE), network design (KRINET), multiphase non-isothermal flow(CODEBRIGHT), reactive transport (RETRASO), etc. The motivation of most of thesedevelopments is deep underground disposal of radioactive waste. However, they havealso been applied to a wide set of problems, both in Spain (Madrid Basin, GuadalhorceAquifers, La Plana of Castellón, Andujar, El Cabril, Barcelona, Aznalcóllar, etc) andabroad: San Andres (New México, USA), Deadman Wash (Wyoming, USA), ColoradoAlluvial aquifers (Arizona, USA), Chalk River (Canada), Leuggern (Switzerland), etc. These applications led to a number of questions regarding the effects of heterogeneityespecially in low permeability media and motivated that, in recent years, they haveconcentrated on basic research issues. Questions addressed by the group include thescale dependence of hydraulic conductivity, radial flow in heterogeneous aquifers andthe meaning of parameters derived from conventional hydraulic tests. We have alsoexplained the paradoxes on the time and directional dependence of porosity. He hascontributed to the organization of over 50 international conferences. He has given morethan 100 lectures in international conferences and universities. He participates in theeditorial boards of four international journals. This basic research is funded by ENRESA, CICYT, CIRIT (spanish and catalonianresearch funding agencies) and, to some extent, by the European Union (altogetheraround 10 projects). Development work on inverse modeling and other numericalmethods has been indirectly funded through application projects, including deepunderground waste disposal (ENRESA, Sandia National Laboratories, QuantiSci,Nagra, etc) water supply and management (Hydrogeochem, city of Barcelona, Ministryof Public works, US Bureau of Indian Affairs, etc) and groundwater contamination(Pacific, Power and Light, inc; metropolitan entity of Barcelona, Audihispana, etc). Hisexperience has gained significantly from collaboration with third world aid organizationson projects in Ethiopia, Burkina Fasso, Peru and Cambodia. He has participated on anumber of advisory boards: National Water Council of Spain, Nature Protection Councilof the catalonian government, UNESCO, etc. He heads the scientific committee for thewater transfer from the Ronne River to Barcelona. He has been awarded the following4
