Changing and growing
mathematics
We have experienced big changes throughout
this year within our Liceo de Colombia Bilingüe
School. These changes have brought the
opportunity of reinventing and innovating the
missionary processes; we have been transforming
the pedagogical praxis and going through new
didactics in order to enrich learning in our school.
Nevertheless, mathematics has always been
presented at Liceo de Colombia and is always ready
for new challenges and changes; not forgetting
about tedious, unimaginative, traditional and
numerical classes, we are constantly looking for
classes where the development of thinking skills are
crucial. Classrooms become magical and learned
spaces where Maths comes to life, recreating
an environment for Liceo de Colombia students
which changes the memory of understanding for
the comprehension with their teacher’s support.
This way to deal with discipline shows us
understanding of the world that has been the sum
of great transformations, rules, algorithms applied
with their comings and goings of basic operations,
the geometric game, the analyze of data until
reaching the comprehension of the discipline.
Therefore mathematics is more than numbers
and complex operations; it goes beyond in human
minds, it configures the brain, it determines a logical
order especially, it develops analytical thinking.
During the last four years, we have been working
synergistically with teachers, coordinators
and directors in order to change the negative
image of maths, we have reached great results
as much national test as international exams,
but the most important is having the chance
of observing the children’s and youngsters’
satisfaction and happiness when they immerse in
the universe of mathematics, where they explore
and understand the elements that it defines.
