Senior Day, 141 Barks Dr, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32547
• Thursday, April 20 – 6pm-7:30 – Democratic Women’s Club - TBA see Okaloosa
Democrats Facebook Events.
• Saturday, April 22 – 9am-Noon – March for Science at Emerald Coast Science
Center, 31 Memorial Parkway SW, Fort Walton Beach, FL – An EARTH DAY
Celebration by Scientists, Science Enthusiasts, and People concerned about
protecting our environment.
Last month, it was my pleasure to
introduce Conexión readers to the
Okaloosa Democratic Party. In case
you missed it, here’s a quick summary:
1) locally the Democratic Party has
long been in the minority, but with
actions taken by the Republican (GOP)
controlled Federal Government along
with GOP elected officials here in Florida
– the Democratic Party is definitely
growing in Okaloosa County. 2) For the
first time in history, a man of Hispanic
descent is leading the Democratic
National Committee – Thomas Edward
Perez is a Harvard Law School graduate
with a long history of advocating
for consumer and civil rights. 3) The
Okaloosa Democrats meet regularly
four (4) times every month with the
Democratic Black Caucus meeting
on the 2nd Monday, the Democratic
Executive Committee meeting on the
3rd Tuesday, the Hootenany Democratic
Social Club meeting on the 2nd
Thursday, and the Democratic Women’s
Club meeting on the 3rd Thursday, plus
we have a new Democratic Women’s
Club forming in Crestview to serve the
northern part of the county.
The four groups are collectively working
as a unified front to stop the dangerous
policies of Donald Trump. Progressives
and Democrats have attended
American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
sponsored People Powered seminars
– to explain to immigrants and their
families exactly what are their rights!
Also the seminars discuss what to do if
your civil liberties are violated.
The first efforts of Democrats, in
conjunction with the ACLU and many
progressive national organizations, will
be to help cities use their local-level
authority to protect undocumented
immigrants from deportation and
become a network of “freedom cities”
capable of withstanding Trump’s
ongoing immigration crackdown. We
are having conversations with local
police forces throughout Okaloosa
County to encourage local law
enforcement to use lenient immigration
policies.
www.conexionflorida.com
The Bannon-Trump administration
ratcheted up their profiling of
immigrants, while Attorney General
Jeff Sessions at the end of March
announced plans to withhold Federal
Funds from states and/or cities
that refuse to enforce their harsh
immigration policies. It is hard for many
of us who have lived through the Civil
Rights Movement in the 1960s to find
our government now dividing people
by race, religion, gender, sexuality, or
skin-color!
Rewind, Review, Refocus, Renew was
the theme last month at the annual
Okaloosa Democratic Black Caucus
dinner. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. still
serves as inspiration to the kind of
country Democrats want to call home:
“We may all have come on different
boats but we are all in the same boat
now.” The Black Caucus within the
Democratic Party is the voice of the
black community. For decades in South
Florida, Hispanic Caucuses have had a
voice in local politics and are helping
to shape national conversations – your
input is needed here.
In Okaloosa County, Blacks make
up only 10.2% of the population.
Interestingly, with Hispanics at 8.6%
of the county population these two
groups could represent 1 out of every
5 Okaloosa County residents. Now just
imagine if there were a Democratic
Hispanic Caucus to join our forces to
help this significant minority population
to be fully heard and engaged. The
Okaloosa Democratic Executive
Committee has reserved spots for
Hispanic representatives. It is our plan
to launch a Democratic Hispanic Caucus
group prior to the 2018 election cycle.
Please join us on Thursday April 13 at
6 pm at Pepito’s Mexican Restaurant
- 1313 Lewis Turner Blvd, Fort Walton
Beach at our Hootenanny Democratic
Social Club Meeting to learn more. We
welcome your questions emailed to
Carta abierta a Raúl Castro
(Libro La
entender esa voz celestial.
cimientos.
Una buena comunicación se traduce
en paz y tranquilidad, una conjugación
muy sencilla de encontrar y que de
hecho decimos buscarla, pero son sólo
palabras, somos tan arrogantes que
no nos gusta escuchar a los demás,
nos gusta escucharnos. Pero peor aún,
fingimos no darnos cuenta y asentimos,
haciéndole creer al otro que realmente
nos estamos comunicando.
HolaHolaHola Beautifuls!
By Bohemian Babushka
habla.
El escuchar se enreda entre cuerdas
de consideraciones, risas y llanto, por
ejemplo si nos habla el placer, estamos
atentos, escogemos las palabras,
adoptamos buena actitud y emanamos
aunque ignore no podrá borrar.
By the time you read this, Babushka will have participated in two major conferences
Babushka isn’t happy when life’s stagnant.
We’re now in Spring, traditionally the time for things to come out of hibernation
For those who don’t believe being with family is a learning experience, look at it
Gideon, one encounters art as
mesmerizing color-fields that gleams
from some enchanted light. Gideon’s
visions in paintings and two sculpture
offer a one-way transport to an ethereal
journey through color. In his landscapes
where whites on paler whites spring
to life, or where gray ashes somberly
lay in repose; or figures of trees soar,
or crystal water becomes murky; and
grand, that profound light is splayed,
reflected and refracted. As well Gideon’s
brushstrokes accent the lift of his brush.
While walking through the world of
Gideon, I constantly feel like a child with
a magnifying glass needing to adjust
my eye to ever new scales, his strokes
release ascending, and descending and
crescendos of penetrating emotion and
motion in paint.
becomes more than a line, or planes
of color no timid abstraction, or where
the layers of paint are not timid but
bold. Gideon’s lush paints inform even
more luscious strokes in a medium that
begs the question: what pot of paint
does he paint from? Asking Heather
Gideon, his wife about the medium,
she shows me his mixer and quietly
mentions his recipe-book for his paint.
Surely he would make his own in 5
gallon vats! Gideon’s gesso medium
performs exactly as made; pliable with
an ordained resilience and reflectance.
The magic of Gideon is held in his
most gestured gesso expressions that
seem capable of departing from the
canvas as they literally extend into his
gold rippled frames (That to my eye,
mimic ruffles on a flamenco dancers’
skirts!) For “Seascape”, the rippling frame
carries the beholder viewer on a remote
voyage far from the canvas.
The color, consistency, weight, and
wave of the gesso medium projects
Gideon’s vision off the wall and onto the
observers until they are mesmerized, -
immersed, engulfed and surrounded.
Both whites against off-whites to blacks
tinged with crimson are deepened as
the slight shadow is cast. The stroke and
shadow become indelible unforgettable
as the depth of color leave an indelible
impression from all angles. Light,
shadow, color, and stroke all emerge
in an emotion of motion that pulsates
from the canvas.
Walking into the world of Gideon I felt
as if I was walking in a forest screened
with the dappled light of leaves
pressing the ground with textures that
were lit but unknown save for the sun.
His landscapes have no land in them
at all, but the alluded to terra firma or
cityscape becomes a bursting array
of implied colorations as edges. His
portraits are a study in subterfuge.
His holocaust visions are of horror
abstracted. The images constantly
elude the eye as color, stroke, and
shadow embed a deeper impression
and beckon a deeper reckoning. Paint,
color and texture survive in a frantic
whirlwind of forms to reveal the playing
field of this artist to one master stroke;
his gesso. Self taught, immersed in
the making of art for commercial
endeavors, Gideon gives the impression
of whirlwind action that rides from one
canvas to the other with scale shifts
and textures noted from one to the
other, referential, scaled and always as
enigmatic as the artists’ oeuvre.
Perhaps the sculptures in the show:
one of bronze, one a gesso white
mannequin, carries the use of line into a
third dimension that begs the art lover
to give futurism one more look. Gideon’s
art refuses to be of as one-dimensional
as just a simple gesso and brushstroke.
His focus is always the same: move color
into subconscious depths where light
imprints with shadows.
where crimson burns alongside the
regal greens. With Gideon, all color
and brushstroke make a sound with
light. His colors, so embedded in
brushstroke (whether small, large or
x-large) spring from his unique gesso
mixes and enliven his brushstroke.
Colors are so ingrained in each touch
of the brush, whether delicate or
The combination of layer upon layer
of GESSO EMBEDDED IN MORE GESSO
TRANSFORMS THE FLAT CANVAS
SURFACE INTO ANIMATED TWISTS AND
TURNS. GIDEON’S ART IS PERPETUALLY
MOVING.
The colors patterns or in a multiple
brush stroked figure, where a line
Prehistoric Underwater
Archaeology in Florida
By Franklin H. Price, Underwater Archaeologist, Florida Department of State
People often confuse archaeology
and paleontology, which is easy
because both fields study the past,
and both often use excavations to
make discoveries. However, they
are concerned with different things:
paleontologists study the biology of the
past, while archaeologists study the past
through the material that people left
behind. In Florida archaeology, what we
can learn goes back from recent history
to the earliest Floridians who lived here
more than 14,000 years ago. Amazing
discoveries in Florida archaeology have
happened on land, but there are also
fascinating sites underwater. Thousands
of years ago, when sea levels were
lower, Florida was much larger than it is
today. With sea level rise, much of the
ancient peninsula was inundated. These
areas that were once land are now
underwater, and submerged with them
are the evidence of past cultures.
Most manmade objects don’t survive
for thousands of years, but stone tools
do. This is why much of what we know
about prehistoric Floridians comes from
artifacts made of stone, like projectile
points, commonly called arrowheads.
Just like other things people make, from
cars to cell phones, projectile point
designs changed with time. When a
new site is discovered, a stone tool can
tell us how old the site is. In Florida, this
can be incredibly old.
An example of this is the Page-Ladson
site in northwest Florida, where artifacts
found in a sinkhole in a Florida river
were dated to 14,500 years old. The
people who left these artifacts behind
used the sinkholes for water, and
hunted mastodons, a now-extinct
relative of the elephant. This makes the
site one of the oldest in North or South
¿Que Pasa Tally?
Celebrating the Old
Spanish Trail Auto Highway
By Charlotte Kahl, Chair, OST100
In 1912 the one millionth Ford automobile rolled out of their assembly plant.
Owners could drive on paved streets to the office, church, shopping or to friend’s
homes in their own town and perhaps out a dirt wagon road to visit a nearby farm.
Travelers took railroads to the nearest big city or farther. Manufactured goods and
agricultural products were shipped by railroad. Smaller producers, without a whole
train-car load could only sell locally. As trucks continued to become bogged down
in the mud, Good Roads Clubs were formed all across the United States to encourage
better roads. Businessmen themselves began paying to pave roads between cities
and lobby their county and state representatives to begin planning and funding
highways. More ambitious businessmen formed transcontinental highway groups.
The Old Spanish Trail Association (OSTA) was one of these groups at first planning an
interstate highway from St. Augustine to New Orleans. Annual planning meetings
were held in Mobile in 1915, Pensacola 1916 and Tallahassee 1917. There was a pause
for the Great World War during 1918. By the end of the war, western states wanted
to become involved siting the numbers of Spanish conquistadores and padres who
had traveled across their lands. The 1919 conventions were held in Texas and San
Antonio was chosen as the center point Headquarters Section as paving of the roads
between various cities began.
Paving went well in the west over the trails of the 20-mule teams of miners and the
well-established stage routes. Connections in the east were delayed by expensive
bridges needed to replace the time-consuming ferry schedules. By 1929 the Old
Spanish Trail all-weather highway was declared finished and grand motorcades
were held from San Diego to St. Augustine in April and St. Augustine to San Diego in
October.
In 2004 elected officials in the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, Texas proposed
a decade-long national centennial celebration of the highway planning and
construction. An Old Spanish Trail Centennial Celebration Association (OST100)
was formed to locate, revitalize and preserve the scenic OST by-way. Now into the
centennial years, the first 2015 and 2016 reenactments of the planning conventions
in Mobile and Pensacola were successful.
The Tallahassee reenactment promises to be even better as OST100 partners with
the Dixie Highway and Florida African American Heritage Preservation Network to
hold the conference on the site of the 1917 OST convention. There will be a Conexion
Media Group Welcome Reception; historic walk, bike ride and motorcade; highway
lectures; and exhibits of the successful OST projects of cities, counties, parishes and
organizations May 18 -20, 2017. This reenactment is free and open to the public.
Registration forms are available on www.oldspanishtrailcentennial.com.
LIDERAZGO Y EMPRENDIMIENTO
leadership and entrepreneurship
Crecer
• Desarrollando las habilidades para Negociar
• Oportunidades para Tomar Decisiones (Creando soluciones – No Problemas)
• Buscando Oportunidades para Hablar por Si Mismos
• Fomentando la Ética de Trabajo Iniciada por Ellos Mismos
• Desarrollo de Planificación de Proyectos
• Lectura, Lectura, Lectura
• Pensamiento Optimista
~Warren Bennis~
Cría a tu hija/o a doblarse pero no romperse. Que sea flexible pero firmemente
arraigad@.
Today’s Children Are
Tomorrow’s Leaders
By Barbara Britt, President B.Britt, LLC, Motivational Speaker/Human Behavioral
Consultant Professional Coach
“To Lead Others, You Must First Lead Yourself”
~John Maxwell~
So at what age do you want to start empowering your child to start leading? If you
believe the above quote to be true, then you see the value of starting off life with
opportunities for them to lead themselves. Leadership is a learned skill, and the best
news is that everyone is capable of learning to lead. Make sure your children have
the opportunity to practice leadership every single day in their home, school, in
sports and everywhere in between. It is never too early to start this by modeling and
giving them opportunities.
“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.”
~John F. Kennedy~
I like to equate a child’s life to that of the Chinese Bamboo Tree. For five years the
bamboo farmer diligently waters and fertilizes what looks like to be barren ground.
Never once missing a time to water and feed the plant, the farmer toils on day after
day. On the fifth year a sprout appears, and in six short weeks it will grow 90 feet
tall. It will be strong and supple, capable of withstanding extreme wind, and climate
changes. The tensile strength of plated bamboo cables is as strong as or stronger
than a steel cable of the same size. What water and fertilizer are you using every
single day from their conception?
“Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.”
Ser Bilingüe
Por Paola Díaz
De la A a la Z
A to Z
hablada (English) ¿Puedes presentarte
y proveer tu información básica o de tu
www.conexionflorida.com
círculo más cercano?, ¿Puedes describir
personas y lugares?, ¿Puedes realizar
transacciones básicas tales como:
comprar víveres o ropa, hacer/ cancelar
una cita, reservar un hotel o alquilar
un carro?, ¿Puedes dar direcciones
básicas o instrucciones? ¿Puedes realizar
todas estas tareas usando oraciones
completas? Etc.
Para un nivel intermedio: ¿Puedes
realizar todas las tareas anteriores, pero
hablar en párrafos utilizando palabras de
transición y conexión?, ¿Puedes relatar
eventos cotidianos?, ¿Puedes hablar de
experiencias/ eventos pasados? ¿Puedes
hablar de tus planes futuros?
Para un nivel avanzado: ¿Puedes discutir
temas de tipo social?, ¿Puedes expresar
tu opinión y sostenerla? ¿Puedes
hacer una hipótesis incluyendo su
sustentación y conclusión? ¿Puedes
utilizar el presente, pasado y futuro en
todas estas? ¿Puedes hablar en párrafos
extendidos?
Es importante ser bilingüe pero también
es importante recordar que el verdadero
bilingüismo está en la efectividad
de la comunicación al usar la lengua
y que existen márgenes de errores
aceptables, siempre y cuando se pueda
lograr una tarea por medio de esta. El
nivel principiante y el intermedio,
son óptimos para completar la mayoría
de tareas generales que necesitamos
realizar en el diario vivir. No nos
desgastemos en la perfección, si no que
animémonos con la efectividad y así
lograr ser bilingüe.
Today’s Children cont.
Prehistoric cont.
Raise your child to bend but not to break. Be flexible yet firmly rooted. Have you
wondered what that bamboo seed was doing for those five years before the first
green shoot appeared? It was building its base of support deep and wide. From
the onset of birth model the skills and beliefs you want developed in them. Be
Humankind or think of it as being a Kind Human. Realize that in order to grow and
lead they must value others as well as themselves. They must believe that their
foundation is strong and can withstand failures and set backs and will be even
stronger because of them. You and they must understand the importance of living
this quote. It is never too early for them to see you modeling leadership skills. What
foundation are you building so they may stand straight and tall?
“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”
~John C. Maxwell~
Teach them to be careful not to underestimate others or themselves based on
perceptions of what is weak or strong. Like the bamboo tree they must stand tall,
believe in their own strengths, and allow others to build and develop theirs as
well. Remind them that no matter where they find themselves today, they have
tremendous capabilities to grow and develop. Life is a journey, one they must
experience within themselves and then share it with others. To remember that there
will be times when they are making progress, but not be able to see it. During these
times it is when the greatest growth and personal development may be taking
place. How fast or how slow is not our main concern, only that we’re moving forward
and planting seeds for others’ growth.
~We all have a Chinese Bamboo Tree inside of us, just waiting to break through.
So keep watering, feeding, and believing, and you too will see the strength of
leadership grow in your child throughout all their stages of life. ~
THEY MUST SEE YOU MODELING:
• Setting a good Example: Balance between Work, Play, and Family
• Encourage Team Work
• Emphasize Perseverance – Every Challenge is an Opportunity to Learn and Grow
• Develop Negotiating Skills
• Opportunities for Making Decisions (Producing Solutions – Not Problems)
• Seek Opportunities to Speak for Themselves
• Encourage Work Ethics They Initiate
• Development of Project Planning
• Read, Read, Read
• Optimistic Thinking
REMEMBER. Today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders. Especially if those children have
parents, and adults who are not afraid of the Challenge of Leading!
We invite all parents to register their kids for the 4th Annual YOUth
LEADership Conference on April 22, from 9 am to 3 pm at the Boys and Girls
Clubs of the Emerald Coast in Fort Walton Beach. It is for 7th – 12th graders.
great deal of new information about
the oldest Floridians from this one
important site.
Please remember, archaeological
sites and artifacts on state land are
protected by law. This also includes
Florida’s submerged lands like rivers,
lakes, and the bottom of the sea. These
lands belong to everyone, so please
help protect them. Don’t disturb an
archaeological site and remember to
leave artifacts in place so that they can
be properly studied. Who knows what
people might learn from it?
Florida’s Underwater Archaeological
Preserves – Shipwrecks
Our state is surrounded by water,
so maritime commerce has been
an important part of Florida’s life
for centuries. With sea traffic came
maritime disasters, including
shipwrecks. As a result, Florida’s waters
contain thousands of shipwrecks.
Historic shipwrecks in Florida are
protected by law and need to be
conserved and protected. If you visit an
historic shipwreck, please remember
that they belong to all Floridians, so take
only photos and leave only bubbles.
Leave shipwrecks alone for future
generations to enjoy. However, divers
are encouraged to visit Florida’s historic
wrecks, and one way to start is to visit
Florida’s Underwater Archaeological
Preserves, our museums in the sea.
veteran of the 1898 Spanish-American
War, this is one of the first US Navy
battleships of a modern design. Two
Spanish colonial wrecks are part of the
preserves program. The first is Urca de
Lima, a Spanish store ship lost along
with the 1715 plate fleet in a terrible
hurricane. Now she rests in shallow
water off Ft. Pierce. The second is San
Pedro, lost in another plate fleet disaster,
this time in 1733 near Islamorada.
At San Pedro, divers and snorkelers
can see the ballast pile, and enjoy
several replica cannon that replace the
originals removed by salvors. Vamar,
off Mexico Beach in the panhandle,
has a very colorful history. A gunboat,
rum runner, and then a support vessel
for an Antarctic expedition, in her last
days she was a tramp steamer and
sank under mysterious circumstances
in 1942. Other Preserves include a river
steamboat, sailing cargo ships, a racing
yacht, a navy tug, and a sugar barge.
Although you are encouraged to see
them in person, you can tour these sites
without leaving your home by visiting
mandan a casa.
besando, tosiendo, estornudando, o compartiendo comida o agua.
Mononucleosis
By Marcos Otero
Eliana is a young adolescent of 14 years. She comes home one day complaining to
her parents that she has headache, fever, and very bad sore throat. Her mother tells
her to take some Tylenol and to go to bed. The next morning when Eliana awakes
she can barely swallow and feels much worse. Eliana is taken to the clinic where
she is examined and found to have severe pharyngitis and swollen cervical lymph
nodes. She is tested for Streptococcus and is positive. Eliana is started on penicillin
based antibiotics and sent home.
Eliana appears to get better but a week later she continues to have swollen glands
and sore throat. She now has extreme fatigue and has some left upper quadrant
abdominal pain. She appears miserable and her parents again bring her to the clinic.
Her physical exam again demonstrates exudative tonsils with swollen lymph glands.
Today however her spleen feels enlarged. Eliana has blood obtained and is tested for
Mononucleosis or Epstein Barr virus. Her results are positive for mono.
Eliana has Infectious mononucleosis (mono) also called the kissing disease. The virus
is spread via saliva so it can be spread by kissing, coughing, sneezing, or sharing
food or water. Most commonly seen in adolescents or young adults.
Mononucleosis Symptoms
These include fatigue, sore throat, strep throat not improved with antibiotics, fever,
swollen lymph glands in neck and axilla, headache, rash, and enlarged spleen. Signs
and symptoms such as a fever and sore throat improve within a few weeks, but
fatigue, enlarged lymph nodes and a swollen spleen may last for a few weeks longer.
Historia y Cultura
History and Culture
Artist Pictures Florida
in the 1560s
By Ben Gunter
The 1560s
were historymaking
times in
Florida. For 50
years, Spanish
conquistadores
had been making
gallant but
unsuccessful
attempts to
establish a
permanent
Spanish
settlement.
Suddenly, expeditions from France started sailing up the St. Johns River, mapping
coasts, constructing forts, and building relationships with Native Floridians.
News of French incursions set off shock waves in Spain. In 1565, Spain decisively
reclaimed La Florida with an expedition of its own. Pedro Menéndez de Avilés
accepted a commission to expel the French and found a city – a commission that
he famously fulfilled, with a massacre that gave the name Matanzas to a stretch of
Florida south of present-day Jacksonville, and with a city that gave the USA its oldest
continuously occupied European settlement, St. Augustine.
What did life in Florida look like during those stirring times? What did people eat and
drink, how did they woo and wed, what did they wear, and how did newcomers and
Natives build bridges between very different cultures?
Fortunately for us, one member of the French expedition was a trained artist. His
name was Jacques LeMoyne, and he escaped the massacre at Matanzas, made his
way back across the Atlantic, and wrote a memoir of his visit to the New World. In
1591, LeMoyne’s memoir was published, with a trove of 43 magnificent drawings to
reconstruct highlights from his experiences in Spanish La Florida.
LeMoyne’s drawings give you eyewitness access to a world that has been completely
lost to history. Through these wonderful works of art, you get to see how French
explorers mapped Florida’s Atlantic coast, made friends with Indians from several
Eliana cont.
• Enlarged spleen Mononucleosis may cause enlargement of the spleen.
• Hepatitis. You may experience mild liver inflammation (hepatitis).
• Jaundice. A yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes (jaundice) also
occurs occasionally.
• Anemia — a decrease in red blood cells and in hemoglobin.
• Thrombocytopenia — low count of platelets.
• Heart problems — an inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis)
• Complications involving the nervous system — meningitis, encephalitis and
Guillain-Barre syndrome
• Swollen tonsils — which can block breathing
Treatment –
Antibiotics do not work. There is no specific treatment excepts rest,
good nutrition, and staying very well hydrated. Use pain relievers such as
acetaminophen or ibuprofen as needed to relieve pain or a fever.
DO NOT USE ASPIRIN!
Gargle with salt water. Drink plenty of water and fruit juices. Avoid contact sports
and wait to return to sports and other activities for at least a month after spleen
size has returned to normal.
Most signs and symptoms of mononucleosis ease within a few weeks, but it may
be two to three months before you feel completely normal. The more rest you
get, the sooner you should recover. Returning to your usual schedule too soon
can increase the risk of a relapse.
To avoid the risk of rupturing your spleen, wait at least one month before
returning to vigorous activities, heavy lifting, roughhousing or contact sports.
Rupture of the spleen results in severe bleeding and is a medical emergency.
Prevention -
Mononucleosis is spread through saliva. If you’re infected, you can help prevent
spreading the virus to others by not kissing them and by not sharing food, dishes,
glasses and utensils until several days after your fever has subsided and even
longer, if possible. The Epstein-Barr virus may persist in your saliva for months after
the infection. No vaccine exists to prevent mononucleosis.
Artist cont.
Timucua tribes, and carved out a place to live. You get close-ups of Timucua Indians
making war and making love, planting and harvesting fields of maize, panning for
gold, hunting for deer, and barbecuing meat for a royal wedding.
Best of all, the drawings tell you stories. LeMoyne designed pictures to record the
sequence of actions in a Native alligator hunt, and the installments in a Native
wedding, and even the steps in a Native wedding dance. When you know how to
read them dramatically, LeMoyne’s paintings give you much more than snapshots
from Florida’s past. They give you home movies from the 1560s.
On April 15 and 16, Theater with a Mission is bringing Jacques LeMoyne back to life
to tell great stories from his artwork during the LeMoyne Chain of Parks Art Festival
in downtown Tallahassee. In a two-tent LeMoyne Encampment, you can meet
Jacques LeMoyne face to face, hear stories hidden in his artwork, step into one of
his pictures for a souvenir photograph with the artist, and win copies of LeMoyne’s
drawings to color yourself.
The LeMoyne Chain of Parks Art Festival is free and open to all ages. Hours of
operation are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 15, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Easter,
April 16. Artwork by over 150 artists will be available for show and sale. Near the
LeMoyne Encampment, a Village will offer special activities for children, including
Pop-Up Studios for kids to make their own drawings. LeMoyne will be making
personal appearances between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, and between 11
a.m. and 3 p.m. on Easter.
Being Bilingual
By Paola Díaz
We know that language connect us with
the world therefore, we can say that
bilingualism give us the opportunity
to have a double connection with
the world and influences the way we
connect one another.
Being bilingual refers to being able
to speak another language different
than the native. But, is this about what
we know about the language or how
we use the language to complete a
task through effective communication
regardless errors on grammar structure
or pronunciation?
According to ACTFL (American Council
on the Teaching of Foreign Language)
the root of proficiency when speaking
another language is based on the
effectiveness when using the language
and in this way to complete a task.
In other words, it is what you can do
with the language. Consequently,
we can say that being proficient in
another language, confers the ability to
interrelate effectively with others and
facilitates stronger global connections
not only in the business world but, in
communities that are more sensitive
to differences and skilled in conflict
resolution through communication.
There levels that define proficiency or
the effectiveness in communication
with acceptable mages of error for
each level (ACTFL). Therefore, do not
worry about having accent or making
mistakes in your sentence structure.
Instead, pay close attention of what you
can do with the language (linguistic
task). For instance:
For a beginners level: In the target
language: Can you meet & greet people
and provide basic information? Can
you describe people and places? Can
you do a basic transaction such as:
buy groceries or clothing, make or
cancel an appointment? Can you make
a reservation or rent a car? Can you
provide basic directions or instructions?
Can you complete all of the above
using complete sentences in the target
language?
For intermediate level: Can you do all
of the above but, speak in paragraphs
using transitions and connector words?
Can you report on current events?
Can you talk about past experiences/
events? Can you express future plans?
For an advanced level: Can you discuss
societal topics? Can you express and
support your opinion? Can you state
a hypothesis, support it and draw a
conclusion? Can you speak in extended
paragraphs.
It is very important to be bilingual but,
is important to remember bilingualism
comes from been effective when
communication in other language and
there are acceptable marge or errors
as long as you accomplish a task when
speaking. Beginners and intermediate
My Relay For Life Story
By David Johnson
I was in the Air Force in April of 2003
when I was notified that I had to go off
to serve in the Middle East for 1 year. My
wife and two young children, ages 9 and
11, were not happy about it but we knew
that part of serving my country could
involve long absences away from each
other so we swallowed hard and prepared
for the 12 month separation. I was
scheduled to leave in August, 2003, so
we made preparations for my departure
during the months that followed. In
July, 2003 I received more news. My
mother, who had just turned 60 in July,
was notified by her doctor that a quartersized
shadow was found in her left lung.
It was cancer and needed to be dealt
with swiftly. Chemotherapy treatments
were scheduled to start immediately
in August and would continue for 3
month. So on August 7, 2003 I boarded
a plane for the Middle East and kissed
my mother goodbye knowing she was
preparing to undergo the hardest fight
of her life. From August to December
she underwent the treatments with the
assistance of my other family members
in the area. During this time I received
word that my next assignment when I
returned from the Middle East would be
to Anchorage, Alaska.
In December 2003 after the chemo
treatments were done, my mother went
in for a check and was declared cancerfree.
My family celebrated with tears in
our eyes and we prepared to move on
to the next chapter of our life. Then, in
January 2004 my mother became very ill.
A doctor’s visit revealed that the cancer
had come back. Not only that, but the
cancer had spread from her chest to her
back…and to her brain. Over the next
several months we resumed the fight, but
early on in the spring we were given the
diagnosis that the cancer was becoming
aggressive…and that my mother would
www.conexionflorida.com
not last much longer. In May, my mother
was moved in to a hospice. I argued and
screamed at my brother and sister that I
wanted to fight this disease and get my
mother back. My brother and sister then
explained to me that at this point the
doctors had said we just wanted to make
her comfortable.
In June, 2004 I started the preparations to
cancel my next assignment and to find a
place closer to my mother. I received this
assignment and was scheduled to go to
Warner Robins, GA as soon as possible.
On July 1, 2004 I was flown back home
and went to visit my mother. She was in
a hospice bed, barely conscious, and not
able to carry on a conversation or look
around the room. I reached out to her
over and over again. Calling her name
until she was able to acknowledge that I
was there. Eventually I was able to hear
her say my name and know she was
aware I was there with her. Nine days
later on July 10, my mother passed away.
At her wake, the pastor said something
I’ll never forget. He said we all prayed for
my mother to be healed of the cancer.
That we prayed for her to not be in pain
anymore. He said our prayers had been
answered and he was right. My mother
had been cured and was no longer in
pain.
I swore on the day of her wake that I
would fight, from that day forward, so that
no one would ever have the last images
of the ones they love be of them in a
hospice bed unable to communicate. I
joined the fight against cancer and almost
every year since then I have participated
in the Relay for Life. I’m asking you to
join in that fight. Please help us defeat
this disease. To join, please visit www.
Epilepsy is a common neurological
condition that 1 in 26 people will be
diagnosed with at some point in their
lives. The diagnosis is given when
a person experiences two or more
seizures that cannot be attributed to
another cause. It is a disorder more
people live with than autism, Parkinson’s
disease, multiple sclerosis and cerebral
palsy – combined.
Called to Serve - Discipleship
By Pastor George
After 8 years of being prepared by
the Lord, six years ago, my wife and
I planted The Rock Ministries of FWB
Church. I was credentialed from
Seminary as a minister of the gospel of
Jesus Christ, and in the manner of the
early church of Acts, I was Ordained,
Anointed, and sent out from Jackson
Bluff Community Church in Tallahassee,
FL to “Go into all the world and preach
the gospel to all creation” Mark 16:15
and “Go and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name
of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey
everything I have commanded you”
Matthew 28:19-20.
Our Church and beliefs are Christ
centered, Bible based, Spirit filled and
led. We seek, by prayer His leading
in all we do. The Bible tells us to care
for the orphans, widows, travelers…
the needy, homeless, hurting, lost and
unchurched. It also tells us to bind
up the broken hearted, to heal the
sick, the lame, the deaf, and that He
has given us the power and words
to accomplish this and complete His
mission. Although Jesus preached and
taught in the Synagogues He taught
discipleship to the Apostles by example
from town to town, in the streets, in
the hills, beside the lake…everywhere
He went, by Jesus’ example we seek to
do likewise. It’s no longer a question
of “WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?” but a
direction to “DO WHAT JESUS DID”.
For the last 5 years The Rock Ministries
Church has held Sunday Worship
Services at Liza Jackson Park in pavilion
A. In June 2016 we were led to come
preach the Good News in downtown
Fort Walton Beach. The Lord has
blessed and provided a way. We host
“Taking It To The Streets” at the fork
in the road, at the foot of the Cross,
intersection of Hwy 98 and Eglin
Pkwy SE every Saturday night from
7-10pm. It is a mission to share the
good news of Jesus with our city. We
invite like-minded and led believers to
come share their God given gifts and
talents to accomplish this mission. Last
Saturday night, (March 25, 2017) the
youth from Tabernáculo de Adoración
joined with us. The Lord held back the
rain for them to bring Jesus’ message of
Hope, to share Praise and Worship and
pray powerful prayers of healing, that
blessed all who heard. We invite you to
join us on and in this mission, to share
the love and joy of Jesus with our city.
Blessings in Christ.
