Dr. Klatt provided the extensive<br />
knowledge and leadership to<br />
produce artificial voices that, for<br />
the first time, could come close to<br />
human speech. DECtalk would boot<br />
up with a voice through an attached<br />
sound system: “DECtalk Version<br />
1.0 is running.” The voice was that<br />
of “Perfect Paul,” one of the many<br />
voices that the device carried. What<br />
was not mentioned in the article was<br />
that “Perfect Paul” was Dr. Klatt’s<br />
own voice, as he synthesized it when<br />
he realized that he would soon no<br />
longer be able to speak. Toward the<br />
end, in the hospital, I heard that Dr.<br />
Klatt communicated through DECtalk,<br />
since, like Stephen Hawking,<br />
he could no longer speak. Incredibly,<br />
I did not recognize Hawking’s<br />
voice as “Perfect Paul” until I read<br />
this article. I think Dr. Klatt would<br />
be gratified to know that his original<br />
voice has been reproduced and used<br />
hundreds of thousands of times, and<br />
that his work was the foundation for<br />
many voice-impaired persons.<br />

I am writing to commend you for<br />
the article “The Human Voice Is the<br />
Organ of the Soul.” As you probably<br />
already knew, May was Better<br />
Speech and Hearing Month, and<br />
the article you wrote was so timely<br />
and appropriate. I am a speech language<br />
pathologist in Florida, but I<br />
had not read about the work being<br />
done by Rupal Patel. I spoke with a<br />
few other colleagues, and they were<br />
also unaware. Thank you for informing<br />
me and many others who travel<br />
on Southwest Airlines about this<br />
pioneering work, and for also being<br />
a facilitator for Dr. Patel to obtain<br />

Move a Mountain” [April 2016] by<br />
Matt Crossman. As I read, I fought<br />
back tears several times in order<br />
to avoid being embarrassed as I sat<br />
among my fellow passengers. I was<br />
both entertained and inspired, and<br />
I have great respect and admiration<br />
for people like “Cosmo.” I appreciate<br />
and love that these people give of<br />
themselves for the boys and their<br />

I always read Southwest: The Magazine<br />
whenever I take a Southwest<br />
flight for work. On a trip in April,<br />
I found myself in tears while reading<br />
two of your articles: “Men of<br />
Earth and Sky” and the “Profiles<br />
in Service” on Charles Rushing.<br />
What touching stories about how<br />
war changed these men. I typically<br />
take your magazine with me when I<br />
leave the flight, as I like to show the<br />
articles to different people in my<br />
life. This one I took for myself, as I<br />
thought the writing was beautiful—<br />
a true honor to the men the writers<br />
were describing. Thank you for the<br />
entertainment and for moving me<br />
