Grandes velas de Libertad
Un relato en primera persona desde a bordo del buque
insignia de nuestro país en su travesía desde Montevideo a
Buenos Aires y como parte del Velas Latinoamérica 2018

Las grandes fragatas suelen cautivar no
sólo por su belleza sino también por su
historia. Por eso, cuando se trata de varias
de ellas reunidas, se está frente a un espectáculo
único y majestuoso. Es el caso de Velas Sudamericanas,
que este año reunió a siete naves.
La historia de este evento comenzó en 2010,
cuando como parte de las celebraciones de los
Bicentenarios de Argentina y Chile, se organizó el
Velas Latinoamérica, evento en el que 12 grandes
veleros representantes de otros tantos países tocaron
16 puertos de todo el continente americano.
El enorme éxito y repercusión que tuvo el evento
sirvió para que se tomara la decisión de organizarlo
nuevamente cada cuatro años. Así, en 2014
se repitió el programa (organizado por la Armada
Argentina) y nuevamente sucedió en este 2018,
en este caso con Chile como organizador y para
festejar los dos siglos de la creación de su armada.
El Velas Latinoamérica 2018 terminará tocando
21 puertos durante 157 días luego de haber partido
en nada menos que la emblemática Río de
Janeiro, en Brasil.
Esta cronista abordó la Fragata Libertad en Montevideo
y desde ahí realizó una de las etapas de
este recorrido tan particular.
Historias de a bordo
La Fragata Libertad se botó en 1956 con el objetivo
de ser un buque escuela; desde entonces
lleva navegadas más de 800.000 millas náuticas
y es la orgullosa poseedora del récord mundial de
velocidad en el cruce del Atlántico Norte a vela ya
que cubrió las 2058 millas náuticas que separan
el Cabo Race, en Canadá, hasta la línea de Dublín-Liverpool,
en 8 días y 12 horas. Este galardón
le fue otorgado en 1966 y aún permanece vigente.

Big frigates are captivating not only for its
beauty but also for its history. For that
reason, a unique and majestic spectacle
is witnessed when there are many of
them together. It is the case of Latin American
Sails that gathered seven boats this year.
The history of this event started in 2010, when
as part of Argentina´s and Chile´s bicentennial
celebrations, the South American Sails was
organized, event in which 12 big ships that
represented many other countries reached 16
ports in all the American continent.
The huge success and impact of the event
contributed in the decision of organizing it
again every four years. Thus, the program was
repeated in 2014 (organized by the Argentine
Navy) and once again took place in 2018, in this
case with Chile as organizer and with the purpose
of celebrating the two centuries of their navy.
The Latin American Sails 2018 will end up
reaching 21 ports during 157 days after having
departed from the emblematic Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil.
This journalist boarded the Frigate “Libertad” in
Montevideo and from that point, performed one
of the stages of this particular journey.

The Frigate “Libertad” was launched in 1956
with the purpose of being a training ship; since
then, it sailed more than 800.000 nautical miles
and is the proud possessor of the speed world
record in the North Atlantic sail crossing that
