Todo lo que ví, escuché, encontré, hice o deshice, entendí o malentendí,
DIEZ CUADRAS ALREDEDOR DEL ESTUDIO en el Centro
Histórico de la Ciudad de México.
Francis Alÿs ha pasado los últimos 20 años explorando con entusiasmo, observando silenciosamente
y creativamente documentando rutinas, hábitos y la idiosincrasia del Centro Histórico de la Ciudad
de México. Ahora, le ofrece todo este trabajo de descubrimientos y experiencias al público en una
exhibición extremadamente bien realizada que se expande a lo largo de varias salas, pasillos,
escaleras y pisos del Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso. Un favorito de la exposición incluye Si eres
un espectador típico, lo que realmente haces es esperar a que suceda el accidente un documental
de 10 minutos de duración acerca de la “vida” de una botella vacía de plástico una tarde de viento
en el Zócalo de la ciudad. Nos encontramos atraídos a un evento al parecer sin importancia, inmóviles
ante el deseo de saber “qué le iba a pasar” a la botella. El final inesperado valió la pena.
El still de video que mostramos arriba tomado de la obra titulada Zócalo es descrita por Alÿs
en el catálogo de la exposición. “La filmación empieza con la ceremonia del izamiento de la bandera
al amanecer y termina cuando es arriada al anochecer. La cámara rastrea el avance de la sombra
del mástil de la bandera, y el desplazamiento subsecuente de la gente que la sigue para protegerse
del sol en la plaza abierta. El lente de la cámara describe un movimiento lateral de tres grados por
hora en un período total de doce horas”.

Everything I saw, heard, found, did or undid, understood or misunderstood,
WALKING DISTANCE FROM THE STUDIO in the
Historical Center of Mexico City.
Francis Alÿs spent the last 20 years gregariously exploring, silently observing and creatively
documenting routines, habits, and the idiosyncrasy of Mexico City’s Centro Histórico. Now, he has
brought these findings and experiences to the public in an extremely well-produced multi-media exhibit
that spans across several rooms, hallways, stairwells and floors of the Antiguo Colegio de San
Ildefonso. A personal favorite of the show was “If You Are A Typical Spectator, What You Are Really
Doing Is Waiting For The Accident To Happen”, a 10-minute documentary of the “life” of an empty
plastic bottle on a windy afternoon in Zócalo Plaza. We found ourselves magnetically drawn into
a seemingly unimportant happening, unable to move because we wanted to know what “happened”
to the bottle. The unexpected ending proved to be worthwhile.
The video still shown above taken from the piece entitled “Zócalo” is described by Alÿs in the exhibit’s
catalogue. “The filming begins at dawn with the flag raising ceremony and ends at dusk with the
descending of the flag. The camera follows the progression of the shadow of the flagpole, and
the subsequent displacement of the people following the shadow as they are seeking refuge from the
sun on the open plaza. The camera lens describes a lateral movement of 3 degrees per hour during
a total period of 12 hours.”
