(6), Orihuela, Elche, Valencia, y costumbrismo (6).
A pesar de publicarse unos 3000 ejemplares es uno de los títulos más escasos de la casa
editorial de A.& C.Black y es una obra buscada y apreciada por los coleccionistas.
Inman sugiere que su escasez es debida a una falta de éxito comercial en la época de su
publicación.
'Southern Spain, another scarce volume, has a particularly fine cover design by
Turbayne. The publisher had earlier turned down a cover design by the author Frederick
Calvert because in Callender's words: ...as we say in Edinburgh, it had the look of
having been designed in Kirkcaddy. Menpes had intended to produce a book on
Southern Spain, but failed to do so in time.' Inman p.56.
'While I have endeavoured to make the book as useful to travellers as within the
prescribed limits was possible, I have essayed to give it, by means of the illustrations, a
more permanent value, it is on the brush rather than on the pen that I have relied to
convey an idea of the gorgeous panorama of Southern Spain, and to recall to the
returned traveller his impressions of the land. As a vade-mecum, then, for the tourist,
and as an album and souvenir of the fairest portion of the realm of the Catholic King, I
hope that the present volume will be of use to the public...' (Prólogo)
