Abstract This publication provides information on the animal disease status in Finland
in 2009. Section 1 of the publication contains current information about
the prevalence of animal diseases to be combatted by law and certain
new infections. Sections 2-7 describe the most important animal disease
monitoring and control programmes and Section 8 discusses the disease
status of different animal species in general. The publication also describes
action taken to prevent and eradicate animal diseases.
Publication date 2010
The status of animal diseases remained good in Finland also in 2009.
The only highly contagious diseases to be combatted by law, that were
diagnosed were Newcastle disease found in wild pigeons and Viral
hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) found in off-shore fish farms. Due to the
cases of blue tongue diagnosed in southern Sweden in the autumn of 2008,
blue tongue monitoring was intensified in the entire country, particularly in
western and southern Finland. A blue tongue strategy was also developed
and preparations started for possible blue tongue vaccinations. Dangerous
animal diseases diagnosed in Finland in 2009 included rabies, which was
found in a bat, and atypical scrapie, which was found in a goat. Moreover,
a Salmonella Tennessee epidemic caused by contaminated feed broke up in
pig and poultry farms during the spring. The epidemic was brought under
control and no people were affected.
