PATIENT CONTROLLED ANALGESIA (P.C.A.)
The P.C.A. pump allows you to
receive a specific dose of pain
medication when you feel you
need it, without additional assistance.
The P.C.A. pump is an electronic
machine that contains pain medication.
The kind and concentration of the drug
is pre-determined by your doctor to
what is right for you.
A tube connects the P.C.A. machine to
your infusion line. When you feel pain,
simply push on a button that is given to you. You
and only you are allowed to use the button. You can
push the button as often as you want without fear of
overdose because the P.C.A. is equipped with a
safety mechanism.
Always remember that if you are feeling pain in spite
of your medication, alert your help care team, they
will adjust your dose or give you additional pain
medication.
