10 Story of the tournament Story of the tournament Author: KWOK Ka Ming GROUP STAGE GROUP A South Africa v. Iraq 0-0 The hosts, South Africa, kicked off the opening match of the FIFA Confederations Cup against AFC champions Iraq at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg. Both teams tried to surprise their opponents with plenty of direct long-range passes in their attacks. However, as the defences were extremely cautious and disciplined, there was hardly an abundance of goalscoring opportunities. The hosts re-established their territorial advantage after the break, however, and had a number of chances, which were either off target or saved by the outstanding Iraqi goalkeeper, Mohammed Kassid (12). The match fi nally ended in a goalless draw. New Zealand v. Spain 0-5 (0-4) Spain dominated the game right from the start. Fluent combination play, tactical maturity and a quick-fi re hat-trick from Torres (9) were the decisive factors in their victory. Their
opponents had no answer to their continuous movement and accurate passing. New Zealand improved defensively in the second period, keeping Spain’s chances to a minimum and only conceding one more goal to Villa (7). Spain v. Iraq 1-0 (0-0) Spain began their second match full of confi dence after their convincing win over OFC champions New Zealand. However, the Iraqis, who had shared the spoils with the host nation just a few days earlier, made life diffi cult for the Europeans as they dropped deep with an extremely compact defence and only occasionally produced a few counterattacks. In the end, it was left to Villa to break the deadlock and seal victory for Spain thanks to a perfectly-placed header from a superb cross from the left-back Capdevila (11). South Africa v. New Zealand 2-0 (1-0) After the disappointment of drawing their fi rst match, South Africa dominated their opponents for the entire game. They showed plenty of determination and some excellent fl air in attack, especially down the left fl ank with Parker (17) scoring his two goals – one in each half – after crosses from Masilela (3) down the left. Although New Zealand improved as a team in comparison to their fi rst game, they never looked likely to win against opponents who were superior in all aspects of the game. Iraq v. New Zealand 0-0 Iraq had to win their fi nal match against New Zealand in Johannesburg to have any chance of advancing to the second stage, and they certainly went all out for victory. However, they were unable to build many attacks as New Zealand dominated for most of the fi rst period. Had Killen (10) converted a couple of chances, the Iraqis would have fallen behind before the break. In the second half, Iraq attempted to change the situation by pushing forward and they made a number of changes to try to recover lost ground. In the end, it was New Zealand who looked most FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009 likely to score as Killen again narrowly missed as the match petered out into a goalless draw. Spain v. South Africa 2-0 (0-0) Spain controlled the game from the start with skilful passes and movement in their attacking play. They were thwarted by the determination of the hosts under the leadership of Pienaar (10), who was dynamic and covered a lot of ground in midfi eld and constantly looked to supply Modise (12) and Parker, who had limited goalscoring opportunities. Spain’s Villa missed a golden chance when he saw his penalty brilliantly saved by the South African goalkeeper, Khune (16), who had also denied Villa earlier in the second half with a couple of superb saves.
