E basta! Non chiamiamolo più l’enfant terrible della moda francese. Enfant, bambino:
ha 61 anni suonati e compiuti da poco, Jean Paul Gaultier, visto che è nato il 24
aprile 1952. Che sia terribile, controcorrente, simpatico e pure diabolico lo si concede
senza alcuna difficoltà, ma smettiamola una volta per tutte di chiamarlo enfant.
Certo, corre sempre per tutta la lunghezza della pedana alla fine delle sue presentazioni
– che siano di prêt-à-porter, haute couture (iniziata nel 1997) o moda maschile
– sorride con quei suoi occhi birichini e dallo sguardo canzonatorio e profondamente
intelligente da allegro compagno di bisbocce. Dice di essere timido, e sarà pure vero,
dice anche che non ha mai avuto il culto di diventare celebre. Anche questo sarà ben
vero, visto che è lui a sostenerlo. Comunque sia è un signore, un professionista che
conosce a meraviglia, anzi a menadito, il mondo del taglio e del cucito. Sa a perfezione
come si confeziona una gonna, un bustier, un pantalone, una giacca. Se a volte tra i
modelli dei suoi colleghi – e non solo coloro che si affacciano in questo mondo – si
scoprono, ahimé, difetti e imperizie, Jean Paul Gaultier non sbaglia mai un colpo. Che
sia di matita o di forbice. La sua zampata è visibile e riconoscibile anche da lontano:
un suo abito è griffato prima ancora di ritrovarsi l’etichetta cucita da qualche parte.
Si capisce subito se è Jean Paul Gaultier che ha creato il modello. Sempre aggressivo
senza essere violento, deciso senza dimenticare tutti i princìpi della gamma femminile,
spigoloso ma al contempo anche morbido e sexy, ogni lavoro su ogni suo capo lo fa
diventare un capolavoro. La strada e il suo mondo notturno e un po’ borderline lo
affascinano da sempre e da sempre lui ne traspone i loro codici nei suoi abiti. Veste
la pelliccia per la rabbia degli animalisti che lui ama e considera amici; ama il cuoio
al limite del fetish senza che però faccia perversione; le trini e i vecchi merletti nelle
sue mani e con il suo amore diventano tessuti d’avanguardia. Reinventa il trench, il
corsetto, la gonna per l’uomo, convinto com’è che ci sia ancora un mucchio di cose da
creare, da escogitare e da concepire: basta respirare l’aria che ci circonda ed essere i
primi a capirla. Un genio, Jean Paul Gaultier? «No – risponde lui – sono solo qualcuno
che cerca di fare, anzi fa il suo lavoro con estrema onestà».
Figlio unico di una mamma segretaria e di un padre contabile, Jean Paul era nato nella
banlieue parigina, a Bagneux. La leggenda – ma poi sono sempre così bugiarde le
leggende? – racconta che Jean Paul iniziò a confezionare i primi abiti-bustier per vestire
i suoi orsacchiotti di peluche già a 6 anni, grazie agli insegnamenti di una nonna
sarta appassionata. Gli inizi di Jean Paul Gaultier – e come poteva essere diversamente,
visto che siamo in pieno nel regno delle favole – furono un vero e proprio disastro
con la sua griffe appena nata, nel 1976, e già fischiata, derisa e sull’orlo del fallimento
e di quel baratro nel quale precipitano tanti sogni. Fu sull’orlo del baratro ma non ci
cadde e restando sospeso in quell’incerto equilibrio per lui arrivarono i favolosi anni
80 che a fionda lo lanciarono in alto e che tuttora non gli hanno fatto toccare il suolo.
Sono oltre trent’anni di successi continui ma non incredibili quelli che lui sta vivendo in
una corsa inarrestabile. Senza mai prendere il fiato. Stagione dopo stagione, vestirà
Madonna con i celebri seni conici a punta, poi arriverà la volta di Kyle Minogue, poi
disegnerà la linea Hermès, firmerà profumi, farà della televisione in Inghilterra, sarà
giurato al Festival del cinema di Cannes, intervisterà per un documentario Lady Gaga
e realizzerà l’abito di nozze della sua amica Beth Ditto che sposerà la sua compagna
Kristin alle Hawaii. Terribile, Jean Paul. Sì, ma attenzione, non più enfant. D’accordo?

Stop calling him the enfant terrible of the French fashion. Enfant, child:
Jean Paul Gaultier was born the 24th April 1952 therefore he is 61 years
old, no more a child. He could be terrible, rebel, funny and diabolic but
stop calling him enfant. He always runs at the end of his fashion shows,
could it be haute couture (started in 1997), prêt-à-porter or menswear
collection. He laughs with his mischievous eyes and his sight is jeering and
deeply intelligent.
He says to be shy, it could be true and he says also that he never had the
cult to become a celebrity. It could be true being him to affirm it. Whatever
it is, he is a Sir, a professional that knows really well the cut and the
sewing world. He knows perfectly how to realize a skirt, a bustier, a pair
of trousers, a blazer. Jean Paul Gaultier never gets it wrong compared to
his colleagues that sometimes make some mistakes or imperfections. His
design is easily recognizable. His creation is popular before applying an
etiquette on it.
You can understand straightaway if Jean Paul Gaultier was the one creating
the model. Aggressive without being violent, determined without forgetting
the principles of the feminine world, tough but at the same time
soft and sexy, each creation becomes a masterpiece. The street and his
night life is a bit borderline, he loves them and he transfers them in their
creations. He wears fur coat for the anger of the animalists that he loves
and consider them as friends ; he loves leather to the fetish limit without
being perversion ; the laces and the old crochets in his hands become
avantgarde fabrics. He reinvented the trench, the bustier, the man’s skirt,
he is convinced that there is still a lot to create, to conceive and study :
it only takes to breath the air that surrounds us and to be the first ones
to understand it. Jean Paul Gaultier, a genius ? «No- he replies- I am only
someone who tries to make actually who makes his job with extreme honesty».
Jean Paul Gaultier was born in the Parisian suburbs in Bagneux, he was
the only child of a segretary mum and an accountant dad. The legend tells
that Jean Paul Gaultier started at the age of 6. He created his first bustierdress
to dress his teddy bears thanks to his tailor grandma’s teachings.
Are the legends always true ? At the beginning Jean Paul Gaultier was a
disaster, in 1976 his griffe was nearly a failure. He was on the edge of the
depths but he didn’t fall, he remained suspended in an uncertainty balance.
With the arrival of the 80s he was launched so high that he hasn’t
yet touched the floor. More than 30 years of steady success, he is living
in an unstoppable run withouth loosing the breath, season after season.
He dressed Madonna with its famous pointed brest, then Kyle Minogue, he
designed the Hermes line, he realized perfumes, he did television in England,
he was judge at the Cinema Festival in Cannes, he did an interview
with Lady Gaga and he realized the wedding dress for his friend Beth Ditto
to marry her partner Kristin in the Hawaii. Terrible, Jean Paul Gaultier. Yes
but no more enfant? Ok?
