Summary
The 2002 Red List of threatened ferns and flowering plants of Switzerland was arrived
at following the IUCN criteria 2001 and the guidelines for their application to national/regional
lists. These new criteria and categories replace the system of grading by
levels of threat, applied in the 1991 list. Regional classifications were undertaken following
the new biogeographical regions as proposed by the Swiss Agency for the Environment,
Forests and Landscape (SAEFL 2001).
Of the 3144 evaluated taxa, 990 (31.5%) are listed on the Red List (categories EX, RE,
CR, EN and VU). An additional 429 (13.6%) species are listed as Nearly Threatened
(NT). 1534 Taxa (48.8%) are considered as not threatened (LC), for another 191 (6.1%)
no data for a precise classification is available (DD). 50 species out of 990 on the Red
List are extinct in Switzerland (RE), 180 are considered as Critically Endangered (CR),
321 as Endangered (EN) and 438 as Vulnerable (VU). Red List species are found in all
regions and habitats of Switzerland, but percentages are much higher in the central
part («Mittelland» region). Equally, higher percentages are found for wetland plants
and species growing in meadows on poor and dry (or seasonally dry) soil. Plants growing
in alpine habitats and woodland are generally much less threatened.
The present Red List replaces the last edition published in 1991 (LANDOLT/SAEFL 1991).
Overall, the percentage of threatened species has increased from a quarter to about a
third of the Swiss flora. Even when considering the influence of the changes in the
applied methods and the increased number of evaluated taxa, a tendency towards a
continuing decline is visible.
