ABSTRACT
Views on success and assessment practices
Yves DE CHAMPLAIN
University of Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada
Success is intimately related to assessment, because all success is the result of
an assessment. But how are those involved affected when the discourse on success
contradicts assessment practices This article analyses three situations experienced
by elementary school teachers, and another examines the point of view of a secondary
three student. Each of these situations affects the person who experiences it differently
and at different levels, but in each situation, we see a breach of contract that
helps us understand the nature of the contradiction between discourse and practice.
These breaches of contract are linked to professional hiring contracts, the personal
commitments of teachers and students, and the social contract behind the education
system. Even if the breach of contract in the assessment context is seen as an obstacle
by the teachers, and tends to erode the meaning that they are able to give to their
work, we also see promising means of promoting student success.
