Why is there an international documentary festival at a time of high-speed media Why do we
pause, to appreciate, taste, and judge, when the continuous stream of images seems to speak
for itself
To show, first of all, that the image can convey the truth, the truth of people, the truth of
peoples, the truth of history. To say also that, while our era sometimes suffers from an overabundance
of images, the antidote is not to be found in rejecting the image, but in the search
for alternative images. Images which are documents, and not feelings. Images which aim at
reality itself and not our fears, our terrors or our fantasies.
This mission of presentation, reflection and judgement has been fulfilled by the Marseille
International Documentary Festival with enthusiasm and balance for fourteen years. I wish to
congratulate its organisers and the Vue sur les Docs association that is behind it, and also to
express my pleasure in being associated with their work. I wish every possible success to this
year’s festival.
