TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
Il ne s’agit pas d’un de ces documentaires personnels sur la seconde guerre
mondiale, ni d’un montage habile de séquences d’archives sur une époque
révolue, une sombre époque, filmée en noir et blanc. Au contraire, la réalisatrice
tente, avec honnêteté, de rendre le concept d’engagement personnel
moins rébarbatif. Une tentative ingénieuse d’adaptation et de libération des
images d’archives qui fait naître de nouvelles sensations, sans nuire à leur
authenticité. La réalisatrice nous raconte l’histoire de son oncle, un jeune
homme mort précocement après avoir rejoint la résistance. Plutôt que des
articles sur la politique, c’est la vie des oiseaux que ce jeune amoureux de la
nature a laissé comme témoignage.
Le titre du film est tiré d’une inscription sur une enveloppe (“À qui de droit”)
que sa grand-mère avait envoyé à son grand-père alors qu’il se cachait
pendant la guerre. Avec une enveloppe similaire, elle l’avait également
informé que leur fils avait été arrêté par les nazis. Avec ce film, la réalisatrice
tente à son tour d’empêcher l’oubli et de faire passer l’information à une
nouvelle génération : “à qui de droit”.
Not just another one of those many personal documentaries about the
Second World War. Not just another arrangement of archive footage from a
long lost black and white era. This is an honest attempt to give the concept
of personal involvement a less threadbare substance. An ingenious attempt
to adapt and free old images into new impressions, without taking away
their authenticity. The film maker tells the story of her uncle, who joined the
resistance as a boy, a step that proved almost immediately fatal. He was a
young nature lover who did not write political pamphlets but noted down bird
observations. Hanlo borrowed the title of the film from what was written on an
envelope by her grandmother to her grandfather at his address in hiding
during the Second World War. In an envelope like that, she also had reported
the news that their son had been arrested by the Nazis. With this film, the film
maker in turn wants to keep the news alive and pass it on to a new generation
of people “‘Whom it may concern’” .
