For many years the distribution of documentary films has been a major component of the
policy of the Groupement National des Cinémas de Recherche. Indeed, the distribution of
documentaries is now uppermost among our concerns as distributors, and we put it into
practise with all our partners in the field under a title with a generic ring: documentaries in
cinemas. With time, we have learned to measure the challenges and satisfactions of showing
documentary films. Despite the difficulties in narration, documentaries offer us the most
convincing approach to what is different from us, but they also offer us entertainment. Indeed,
their handling of reality can lead us to the most sophisticated nooks and crannies of our
everyday lives by unearthing the human comedy or tragedy hidden there.
We have pursued our determination to support documentary films for nearly ten years, and
we have reached indisputable results: in 2000 out of the 27 films supported we have helped
8 documentaries at the GNCR, and in 2001 out of 29 films 8 also belong to this category.
We have cooperated with the International Documentary Festival of Marseille for several years
in this promotion of documentary cinema. In the form of Georges Perec’s “je me souviens”, an
inventory is even possible of films shown at the last festival which have their place on our
screens.
I remember... Mother dao before it became Chronique Coloniale. I remember... La vie est
immense et pleine de danger. I remember... Nico icon. I remember... Grands comme le monde.
I remember... Public Housing. I remember... Nos traces silencieuses. I remember... Doulaye,
une saison des pluies. I remember... Highway. I also remember that it was two documentaries
that sold the most tickets in cinema theatres last October. So we have every reason to hope
that this festival will continue to be one of those seekers of documentary films that will fill the
programmes of our cinemas in the near future.
