C’est, semble-t-il, un prestigieux concours de citrouilles. Sur des
images muettes – citrouilles convoyées, pesées, mesurées –, aux
États-Unis puis au Japon, deux voix off, l’une d’homme, l’autre de
femme, délivrent placidement un discours qui n’a rien, et tout à voir.
On y parle des idées et du lieu où elles naissent, du cerveau... Dans
l’axe d’un comique pur, ce film joint deux directions extrêmes du
documentaire : l’enregistrement du réel brut, y compris sous la forme
molle d’une grosse citrouille, et la réinvention de ce qui, venu du
monde, s’offre à tous les délires. (EB)
Apparently, it is a prestigious pumpkin competition. Over silent
pictures – of pumpkins being transported, weighed and measured –
in the USA then in Japan, two off-screen voices of a man and woman
placidly deliver a discourse that has nothing and everything to do
with them. They speak of ideas or the place where they are born,
of the brain, and so on. In the tradition of pure comedy, this film
combines two extreme directions of the documentary: the recording
of raw reality, including the lifeless blob of a large pumpkin, and
the reinvention of worldly objects that inspire all sorts of frenzied
