Entrepreneurial Spirit Lives On
During the Gold Rush, it was the entrepreneurs
that provided food, goods
and shelter and who often achieved
greater wealth than the miners. They also
provided a base upon which our towns were
founded.
Today, there is a place in the local economy
for everything from cutting edge technology
companies to small family businesses
to manufacturers that ship products all over
the world.
The county is fortunate to have a history
of tech companies that dates back to 1959
with the formation of the Grass Valley
Group (GVG). The company continues today
as Grass Valley A Belden Brand and is an
important world supplier of video equipment.

At the eastern end of the county, the
Town of Truckee economy is for the most
part tourist driven. There is not a great deal
of manufacturing, although there is some
light industry. Among the largest areas of
employment are government, schools and
the hospital, as well as businesses geared to
the needs of tourists.
Economic Resource Council
The Nevada County Economic Resource
Council (ERC) is dedicated and positioned to
assist in business attraction, creation and retention.
It works with businesses looking to
grow and entrepreneurs thinking of creating
a business.
One ERC goal is for Nevada County to become
known as a hub for entrepreneurship
and dynamic small business growth compared
to other rural counties in California
and the United States. It is promoting the
county’s TOTAL Package – Talent, Outdoors,
Technology, Arts and Lifestyle.
A part of the ERC is the Nevada County
Mike Mooers moved from the
Bay Area to Nevada County and
founded his business – Wicked Good
Copywriting and Communications
– at Sierra Commons where he
still works. With a focus on the
outdoor, winter sports and active
lifestyle industries, his clients include
Gossamer Gear, Arc’teryx and Yakima
Racks, among others. Mooers is
an active member of the Sierra
Commons community and has served
on its Board of Directors.
Tech Connection which acts
as an umbrella organization to
support and connect initiatives
that develop, retain, and attract
tech talent and businesses to the
county.
The NC Tech Connection is an
offshoot of the Connected Communities
Academy which offers
new training options in the field
of technology, information about
tech careers and how to get one,
and support and advice from
industry experts. The academy
is not just for geeks, as it offers
options for just about everyone looking for a
new start and a new career.
Sierra Commons
A non-profit, Sierra Commons is a business
ignitor. Its education programs and
tools turn ideas into new businesses, and
help existing businesses go to the next level.
Offered are one-on-one mentorship, class
sessions, single day workshops and the indepth
Ignitor Course.
The Sierra Commons community works
in shared office space and is made up of
remote employees, independent contractors,
freelancers, startup companies, students,
consultants, growing businesses and more.
