THE NATIONAL EXCHANGE HOTEL: 211Broad Street. Building’s facade unchangedsince 1854. Thousands of dollars in goldpassed over the bar which was shipped‘round the Horn.2. POWELL HOUSE: 203 S. Pine Street.Dating from 1860, building was once hometo a soda works which manufactured carbonateddrinks.3. CITY HALL: 317 Broad Street. First built onthe site in 1878, replaced with “modernbuilding” in 1937 constructed by WPA.Completely renovated.4. NEVADA THEATRE: 401 Broad Street.Opened in 1865 making it the oldest theatrebuilding in California.6. NEW YORK HOTEL: 408 Broad Street.Dates from 1880, fire destroyed originalhotel built in 1863.7. CHINESE QUARTER: Commercial and YorkStreets. Existed from the beginning of theGold Rush to about 1879. Buildings datefrom mid-1800s, among some of the oldestin Nevada City.8. SOUTH YUBA CANAL BUILDING: On plazaat Commercial and Union Streets.Headquarters for largest network of waterflumes and ditches in the state. Office usedfrom 1857 to 1880. Holdings later becamepart of the PG&E hydroelectric system.Building is now home to the Nevada CityChamber of Commerce.ANDREW WRIGHT / LIGHTHAWKPHOTONevada Theatre5. HOMES OF INTEREST: 449 Broad Street isbelieved to date from 1885, and at one timehoused a doctor’s office and a jail. Plaque onthe property honors Senator Aaron A.Sargent, author of an amendment to theU.S. Constitution which would have givenwomen the right to vote. He built a houseon the property in the 1850s.Charles E. Mulloy home built in the late1870s sits between East and West BroadStreets. Mulloy, a successful businessman,shocked residents when he hanged himselfin the barn.9. OTT’S ASSAY OFFICE: On plaza. James J.Ott made historic assay of silver ore in 1858which started the rush to the ComstockLode in Nevada.10. THE OLD BREWERY: Corner ofSacramento Street. Known today as TheStone House. Step inside to explore thislandmark building. The building was constructedof granite block from the Sierraaround 1882.
