Stuck under passe-partout.150 / 200 €Death holds in one hand an hourglass over which a snake passes and in theother hand an arrow that points to a young richly clothed character. He is seatedat a table with a watch, a candle and a sheet on which is inscribed the sentence:«O Mors quam amara est/ memoria tua homini pacem/ habenti in substantiis»[Vulgate 41, i.e. Oh death, how bitter it is for a man who is at peace with hisexistence to contemplate thee]. Rössler (Görlitz 1775-1845 Dresden) was aGerman portrait painter. He studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts withGiovanni Battista Casanova. After visiting Paris, he stayed in Rome from 1803until 1807 then went back to Germany where he became a professor of paintingin Dresden.A villager standing on a tabouret while engaging with a women who seems tobe introducing her baby. A second older child is tied to her back. On the verso ms.text by different hands in Dutch and German, dated 1673 and 1675. A signaturein black ink at the lower edge dates and attributes the drawing «PfeifferHamburg 1675». Johann Joachim Pfeiffer (1661-1701) was a Hamburg painterand draughtsman working mostly on blue or red prepared paper. The sheetprobably belonged to the same sketchbook of which a number of drawings arenow in the collections of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Bremer Kunsthalle andthe Staatsgalerie of Stuttgart. C. 1640-1660.Drawing, pen and grey ink, grey wash, 24,4 x 19 cm, laid paper with watermark,unsigned (some foxing).200 / 250 €Roman soldier kneeling before the throne of an emperor, with antiquearchitecture in the background. The elongated figures with small heads andthe linear drawing technique remind one of the drawings of the German artistJohann Heinrich Schönfeld (1609-1683). Born a goldsmith’s son, Schönfeldreceived his training with family members in Memmingen. He travelled toStuttgart, Basel and eventually to Rome. From 1631 to 1651 he lived in Italyas member of an artistic group of painters known as the «Schilderbent», whichalso included Poussin, Both and Poelenburgh. Between 1562 and 1563 he had aworkshop in Augsburg, where he became one of the most important painters ofthe third quarter of the seventeenth century. The scene is set in a stable and a flock of sheep,a bull and donkey can be seen on the left. The white chalk on brown support isused to achieve a rustic nocturnal impression. Two men are chained to the wall, while a third on the leftis standing on a flight of stairs. Perhaps a justice scene.
