in Europe: HUNGARIAN RAILWAY MUSEUM
The largest open-air railway entertainment park
in Europe is a dream come true for everyone who
fantasized about being a railroad man as a child.
Visitors can get a close look at different locomotive
types, as well as take part in interactive programs
from Tuesday to Sunday. On weekends and special
occasions, for an extra charge, you can travel in the
train driver’s cab of a nostalgia diesel locomotive,
after which you’ll get an honorary degree of train
drivers. The museum also boasts people-powered
handcars which visitors are welcome to try.

The largest synagogue in Europe:
DOHÁNY STREET SYNAGOGUE
The Dohány Street Synagogue is not just the largest
one in Europe but the second greatest in the whole
wide world. The imposing Moorish-style building
was built in 1859 with 44 meters high towers and a
spacious, 1200 square meters indoor area. The adult
tickets to see this fascinating piece of architecture
go for 9000 HUF and include a guided tour in the
building and a free pass to the exhibitions about the
Jewish culture and religion held in the Hungarian
Jewish Museum, the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial
Park, and the graveyard.

Metro, Europe’s first underground railway system
that was completed on 2 May 1896. The tunnel

The largest continuously running interactive
museum in Europe: PINBALL MUSEUM
Who would’ve guessed that one of Budapest’s most
popular tourist attractions would be a museum? The
Pinball Museum, situated inside a cellar at Radnóti
Miklós Street in Pest, is less like a museum and
more like a retro arcade: with over 100 playable
pinball machines (some of them dating from the
19th century), acquired from countries such as
France, the United States and Portugal, and more
than 30 arcade games, it is an awesome, interactive
exhibition of fun. Once you are there, check out their
newest addition, a supercool Budapest inspired
pinball machine!

2017, District XI’s Bartók Béla Boulevard is
a charming avenue where architecture, fine

As one of its main draws, this bustling boulevard,
stretching from Gellért Bath to Lake
Feneketlen, boasts an impressive array of literary
and art cafés, each with its own unique

CASTLE DISTRICT

Hungary’s National Széchenyi

viewpoints in Budapest are also to be found in
the Castle District, including the fairytale-like
Fisherman's Bastion and the scenic Castle Hill
Funicular. Stroll along Tóth Árpád Promenade,
lined with rows of trees and elegant mansions,
and visit Várkert Bazaar, a beautifully restored

MIKSZÁTH SQUARE

and it's named after famous Hungarian writer
Kálmán Mikszáth. In the middle of the square,

square and in the nearby streets. They're dishing

JESUIT CHURCH OF
THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS
The church, well known for its distinct red brick
exterior, was designed in a French-Romanesque
style by József Kauser, got its grand opening in
1909 and quickly became the heart of the Hungarian
Jesuit community that very same year. After
its inauguration, a vibrant religious community
blossomed around the church, although it had
to take a 30-year break during the socialist era.
Since 1989, the church has been thriving once
more, and its support has been unwavering. If you
face the charming Szent Lőrinc Square, you'll see
the arched windows and decorations, all part of
the Neo-Romanesque style.

URÁNIA NATIONAL
FILM THEATRE
The Uránia National Film Theatre isn't your
run-of-the-mill cinema; it's a time machine that
catapults you into a century-old cinematic wonderland.
Back in 1895, it started as an orpheum
tucked away in the lower floors of a charming
apartment building. Fast forward to 1917, and
voila, it officially transformed into a cinema. But
here's the real gem: it has been showcasing moving
pictures since 1899, making it Hungary's oldest
continuously operating film theatre. Besides
catching a flick, you can groove to a concert or get
lost in a ballet performance in the spectacular
screening rooms of the building.

INNER-CITY PARISH CHURCH
Budapest's Inner-City Parish Church, also known
as the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is located
right in the busy hub of the city. Its adventurous
history traces all the way back to the 14th century,
and over the centuries, it even pulled double duty as
a mosque. In the mid-1700s, it got a Baroque-style

CAVE CHURCH
For a captivating visit right at the heart of Budapest,
make sure to explore the Gellért Hill Cave Church, a

1869. They also got a whole bunch of awesome
events lined up in 2023: think Santa's shindig,

Day, epic Be Massive parties, Ice Rinks Night, and

The New York Café, often hailed as the world's
fanciest coffee spot, threw open its doors back in
1894. This place is a real showstopper, with a fancy
fountain at the entrance, ceiling paintings (they
call 'em pannos), super posh Venetian chandeliers,
and those famous twisty columns. The story
goes that during the big grand opening, famous
Hungarian writer Ferenc Molnár got so pumped
that he snatched the café's key, sprinted all the
way to the Danube with his buddies, and chucked
it into the river to make sure this café never close.

Every year, Hungary's big Christmas Tree takes
centre stage at Kossuth Square, right behind
the grand Parliament building. The pine tree arriving
from different parts of the city each year,

lights and 16,000 vibrant LED bulbs – this 18-meter
giant totally owns the Christmas scene in the
city. And here's the kicker: from the first Advent
