The largest open-air railway entertainment park
in Europe: HUNGARIAN RAILWAY MUSEUM
The largest open-air railway entertainment park
in Europe is a dream come true for everyone who
fantasized about being a railroad man as a child.
Visitors can get a close look at different locomotive
types, as well as take part in interactive programs
from Tuesday to Sunday. On weekends and special
occasions, for an extra charge, you can travel in the
train driver’s cab of a nostalgia diesel locomotive,
after which you’ll get an honorary degree of train
drivers. The museum also boasts people-powered
handcars which visitors are welcome to try.
The largest synagogue in Europe:
DOHÁNY STREET SYNAGOGUE
The Dohány Street Synagogue is not just the largest
one in Europe but the second greatest in the whole
wide world. The imposing Moorish-style building
was built in 1859 with 44 meters high towers and a
spacious, 1200 square meters indoor area. The adult
tickets to see this fascinating piece of architecture
go for 9000 HUF and include a guided tour in the
building and a free pass to the exhibitions about the
Jewish culture and religion held in the Hungarian
Jewish Museum, the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial
Park, and the graveyard.
The largest continuously running interactive
museum in Europe: PINBALL MUSEUM
Who would’ve guessed that one of Budapest’s most
popular tourist attractions would be a museum? The
Pinball Museum, situated inside a cellar at Radnóti
Miklós Street in Pest, is less like a museum and
more like a retro arcade: with over 100 playable
pinball machines (some of them dating from the
19th century), acquired from countries such as
France, the United States and Portugal, and more
than 30 arcade games, it is an awesome, interactive
exhibition of fun. Once you are there, check out their
newest addition, a supercool Budapest inspired
The first interactive selfie museum in Europe:
MUSEUM OF SWEETS & SELFIES
In Budapest, you can now encounter the Museum of
Sweets and Selfies at two locations, each adorned
with diverse themes, creative spaces, captivating
backdrops, and fantastic installations. Amidst
whimsical settings like the strawberry-banana
swing, candy pool, unicorns, banana rain, and the
colossal bubble bath – the possibilities for crafting
unique photos of yourselves and each other are
limited only by your imagination. Allow yourselves
to be swept away by this kaleidoscope of colours
BARTÓK BÉLA BOULEVARD
Named Budapest’s coolest neighbourhood
by the prestigious TimeOut magazine in
2017, District XI’s Bartók Béla Boulevard is
a charming avenue where architecture, fine
arts, literature and culinary pleasures walk
hand in hand.
As one of its main draws, this bustling boulevard,
stretching from Gellért Bath to Lake
Feneketlen, boasts an impressive array of literary
and art cafés, each with its own unique
character and ambiance. Hadik, Kelet, and
Arnoldo are just a few of the must-visit spots
where you can sip on a warm beverage while
immersing yourself in the world of literature
and intellectual conversations.
The avenue's bohemian spirit extends to its
eclectic mix of bars and restaurants, including
ruin bar-style Szatyor (named by famous
Hungarian litterateur Frigyes Karinthy),
laid-back Béla, and cozy Mitzi, where you
can treat yourself to delicious fare and creative
cocktails amidst a vibrant atmosphere.
The tree-lined thoroughfare also offers a
diverse selection of international cuisines
to satisfy any craving. From the Italian flavours
of Allegro and the authentic Neapolitan
pizzas of MOTO to the Spanish delights
of Ultramarinos Martinez, the Polish allure
of Gdansk Bookstore Café, and the Hawaiian
tang of ONO Poké Bowl Bar, there's a culinary
adventure waiting for everyone in this
dynamic district!
CASTLE DISTRICT
Travelers in the Middle Ages used to say
that Europe had three crown jewels: Venice
on the waters, Florence on the plains, and
Buda on the hills. Budapest’s postcard-worthy
Castle District, dominated by a Baroque
palace complex, the ivory-white belfry of
Matthias Church, and the seven-towered
Fisherman's Bastion, has been listed as a
UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987.
Once the seat of kings, queens, and emperors,
the Royal Palace now serves as one of
the main cultural hubs of the country, accommodating
Hungary’s National Széchenyi
Library, along with a number of important
museums, including the National Gallery,
the Budapest History Museum, and the recently
renovated St. Stephen’s Hall, a masterwork
of Hungarian applied arts.
The Castle District's monumental splendour
doesn't end with its iconic palace. As
you wander through its cobblestone streets
and curved stairways, you'll discover a
treasure trove of architectural gems that
add to the area's rich historical tapestry,
from the freshly reborn Riding Hall and the
Palace of the Royal Guard to Csikós Courtyard’s
tranquil Turkish garden, the intricate
Matthias Fountain, the ruins of the Dominican
Cloister (which you’ll find incorporated
into a modern hotel building), or the ornate
Gothic sedilias of the residential buildings
on Úri Street.

Restaurant. Savor pastries at the patinated
Ruszwurm Confectionery, unwind at Gösser
SZÉLL KÁLMÁN SQUARE
Kálmán Square is one of the city’s busiest transport
hubs, as well as Buda’s culinary centre, with
plenty of eateries, cafés, and bars to explore, offering
a diverse range of flavours and experiences
for food lovers and social butterflies alike.
Do you have a craving for Middle-Eastern delights?
Check out Pingrumba. Would you like to
indulge in juicy burgers? We’ve got two words for
you: Bamba Marha. In the mood for craft bakery
marvels and parks. The magnificent
Postal Palace (housing the free-to-visit Money
while the nearby Church of the Sacred
Heart stands as a testament to the pioneering
HEROES’ SQUARE
Framed by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle,
Hungary's grandest square is an architectural
wonder designed by the dynamic duo Albert
Schickedanz and Fülöp Herczog. It all started in
1896 for the millennial celebrations, but the star
of the show, the Millennium Memorial, didn't make
its debut until 1906. The Millennium Memorial is a
stunner, with Archangel Gabriel atop a towering
column, holding Hungary's Holy Crown. There's a
crew of seven Hungarian chieftains on horseback,
four allegorical figures, and 14 significant figures
from Hungarian history in two colonnades.
JESUIT CHURCH OF
THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS
The church, well known for its distinct red brick
exterior, was designed in a French-Romanesque
style by József Kauser, got its grand opening in
1909 and quickly became the heart of the Hungarian
Jesuit community that very same year. After
its inauguration, a vibrant religious community
blossomed around the church, although it had
to take a 30-year break during the socialist era.
Since 1989, the church has been thriving once
more, and its support has been unwavering. If you
face the charming Szent Lőrinc Square, you'll see
the arched windows and decorations, all part of
here's the real gem: it has been showcasing moving
In 2011, Retro Lángos made our beloved deepfried
comfort food (traditionally consumed plain
or topped with garlic oil, sour cream, and grated
cheese) available in Budapest all year round. Initially,
they opened a tiny food stand next to Arany
János metro station, which grew immensely popular
during its 9-year lease. Due to the metro station's
renovation, the food stand had to close, but
Retro Lángos survived in the form of a brand new,
modern lángos bistro just across the street.
Today, they serve over 20 types of lángos, ranging
from classic flavours to inventive variations, such
as the Meat Bomb inspired by a guest who wanted
all available toppings on his lángos. Even those
with food intolerances can enjoy gluten-free, lactose-free,
and vegan options. All lángoses are
lovingly prepared with fresh, high-quality ingredients
on the spot.
Retro Lángos' winter favourites include sheep
curd-sausage lángos with scallion, tzatziki
sauce-chicken lán gos with tomato and feta cheese,
and the mouth-watering pulled pork lángos with
BBQ sauce. Whether you go for a simple, a seasonal,
or a more creative lángos, don't forget to pair
them with the unique Retro specialty cocktail, a
sensational blend of Tubi, ginger, and passion fruit.
The warm indoor seating area attracts many people
during the winter months, so it's common to
see a queue in front of the bistro, especially on
weekends. But fear not, Retro Lángos is famous
for its fast service. A friendly, 20-member staff
ensures you'll fill your belly with a hearty lángos
in no time.
After last year's first successful concert in Budapest,
Arizona's Halocene returns to the city again. There
are bands, tribute bands, nostalgia parties and then
there is Halocene, who are all three at once. The
YouTube hit band has been known for their unique
covers, but there's no shortage of original songs
neither. Prepare for an extreme stage spectacle and
a unique soundscape. Bet your favourite song won't
love and the joys of a new life. We can join them on
this uplifting journey on 15 November at Dürer Kert.
THE SHERLOCKS
The Sherlocks could easily be the next Arctic Monkeys,
but they are certainly one of the most exhilarating
British indie-rock bands of recent years. The
Yorkshire band have already proved themselves to
acts like Liam Gallagher and Kings of Leons, and
now it's time for us to dance to their new songs at
Dürer Kert on 27 November. For tickets, head to
NEW YORK CAFÉ
The New York Café, often hailed as the world's
fanciest coffee spot, threw open its doors back in
1894. This place is a real showstopper, with a fancy
fountain at the entrance, ceiling paintings (they
call 'em pannos), super posh Venetian chandeliers,
and those famous twisty columns. The story
goes that during the big grand opening, famous
Hungarian writer Ferenc Molnár got so pumped
that he snatched the café's key, sprinted all the
way to the Danube with his buddies, and chucked
it into the river to make sure this café never close.
'Tis the season to cozy up by the Christmas tree
is decked out with 2,500 meters of twinkly fairy
