ABSAAR is one of the oldest and most reputable manufacturers of automotive
battery chargers in Europe; it is also among only a few still remaining today.
Located since 1969 in the state of Saarland only a few kilometers from the
borders with France and Luxembourg, we deliver our products to the most
prestigious retail and automotive channels. Our customer list reads like a “Who’s
Who” of the automotive retail channels in Europe.
We are proud to be manufacturing our products in Germany and proudly display
“Made in Germany” on all of our high-quality products.
At a time when competition from Asia has increased dramatically in retail
channels, we are proving to ABSAAR customers that they can make higher
profit margins without the problems associated with customer returns and
dissatisfaction due to poor manufacturing quality.
Our strategic focus on fast and flexible deliveries to customers throughout
Europe means that you do not have to commit to purchase large container
quantities long in advance of ever-more-uncertain winter conditions, meaning that
you have the product in your stores when it is needed with certainty that you can be
resupplied quickly. We deal in pallet and carton quantities, not containers! Having
ABSAAR products at the right place at the right time and at the right price is a
Battery Technologies
Traditional Charge (1 Step)
1 Step: The current decreases and the voltage increases. Manual turn off to
avoid any overcharging.
Automatic Charge (2 Steps)
Step 1 (Wo): The current decreases and the voltage increases.
Step 2 (U): At 14.4V (12V maintenance-free) or 15.3V (12V normal lead-acid)
the charger switches to “Floating” mode, delivering a constant voltage
(13,6V) to complete the charge and avoid overcharging.
surcharge.
Automatic Charge (3 Steps)
Step 1 (I): The charging current is constant. The voltage rises to 14.4V or 14.8V
(battery 12V) depending on the model of the charger. (The charge
is significantly faster than with other charging curves, for example 5
instead of 8 hours.)
Step 2 (Uo): The charger stabilises at 14.4V or 14.8V, until the decreasing current
reaches 1/5th of its initial position.
Step 3 (U): The charger switches to “Floating” mode, delivering a constant voltage
of 13.8V to complete the charge, maintain the charge at that level and
avoid overloading.
Schritt 1 (I): Der Ladestrom ist konstant.
Étape 1 (I) : Le courant de charge est constant.
Automatic Charge (4 Steps)
Step 1 (Io): The charger begins charging with a low current for 10 minutes to condition
and regenerate the individual cells of the battery which over time can
become sulfated.
Step 2 (I): The charger switches to deliver a constant charging current while voltage
rises until 90% of the battery’s capacity (2.35V to 2.47V per element,
depending on battery) is reached.
Step 3 (Uo): Constant voltage is maintained during charging until 120% of the battery’s
capacity has been reached.
Step 4 (U): The charger switches to “Floating” mode, delivering a constant voltage of
2.3V per element to avoid self-discharging.

Battery Generalities
06
Generalities Concerning Batteries
• A battery is a container in which an electric power is stored in chemical form.
This energy is restored in the form of D.C. current.
• The application on its terminals of voltage produced by an alternator or by a
charger creates a current which modifies the composition of its elements by the
phenomenon of electrolysis: the battery accumulates energy.
• When the direction of the chemical reactions is reversed (when the energy
of the battery is consumed) the battery restores the accumulated charge,
functioning as a generator of D.C. current.
Operation of a Battery
HOW DOES IT FUNCTION?
• A 12V battery consists of 6 elements of 2V each assembled in series in a
“polypropylene container”. A 24V battery results from the connection in series
of 2 batteries of 12V or 4 batteries of 6V.
• In each element, 2 plates out of lead covered with active matter are put in
opposite polarity in an electrolytic solution containing sulphuric acid and
distilled water.
• This coupling of plates generates a potential difference of 2 Volts. The process
of charging/discharging consists of a migration of the “active matter” from the
lead plate towards the electrolyte and vice-versa.
3 Battery Families
3 FAMILIES OF BATTERIES FOR 3 TYPES Of USE:
• Starting Batteries: Classically used in automobiles (low price). They can
produce high intensities (100 to 1,000A) for short periods. These batteries do
not tolerate being discharged deeply.
• Stationary Batteries: Can undergo a great number of discharge cycles.
The discharge can be as much as 80% of the capacity. They are often used for
alarms, for example.
• Traction Batteries: for strong discharge currents, long and significant levels of
discharge (material handling equipment such as forklifts, for example).
Gel Batteries
2 BATTERY TYPES:
• Batteries with Liquid Electrolyte: Generally speaking, “open” batteries can
lose their electrolyte over time. They require maintenance and can release
acid in the event of reversal (corrosion!). These batteries now exist with
“maintenance free” stoppers which limit the losses of electrolyte.
• Gel Batteries (Maintenance Free): The electrolyte is fixed in a gel. They can
be turned upside down without any loss of liquid. These batteries are more
expensive and have lower performance than batteries with free electrolyte.
Preconditions to Charging
• Checking the Charge State: This is performed by measurement of the no-load
voltage of the battery. In order to do this the battery must not be used for
several hours prior. A battery having a no-load voltage of 12.8V is considered
as 100% charged. At 12V the battery is 90% discharged. Checking can also be
performed by weighing the density of the electrolyte using an “acid scale”. It is
a more difficult (due to the handling of the acid) but reliable method.
• Charge Intensity: The recommended charging current is approximately 1/10th
of the capacity of the battery (i.e. 10A for a battery of 100Ah). Beyond this level
the charger could deliver too much current, which does not ensure an effective
charge. It is not possible to completely charge a lead-acid battery in 1 hour!
Comparing Battery Chargers
• Automatic chargers guarantee the protection of the on-board electronics of
vehicle accessories when charging batteries still connected to the vehicle.
Traditional chargers do not!
• Average Current (Adc): This is the actual value officially and internationally
recognized by European standards (in EN 60335-2-29). This is not the effective
(RMS) value indicated on most chargers, including ABSAAR chargers. The RMS
value stated on most chargers is generally 1.414 times the Adc value, rounded
up or down with a margin of 10%. It does not make it possible to charge of the
more important batteries.
Charging Current Selection
• The nominal voltage of the battery charger must correspond to the nominal
voltage of the battery.
• The charging current must meet the requirements of the battery, because it is
a function of the capacity.
• The only important current for charging is the average value of the current, which
is also called Arithmetic Value, or Adc.
• It determines the amount of time required to charge the battery.
Short rule:
Charging current (AMPS DC) = Capacity of the battery (Ah)
10
Example:
Charging current for a battery of 60Ah is 60Ah = 6 Adc
10
Note : With a charger of this value (example 6Adc) a 50% empty battery
can be charged in 12 hours (also referred to as over-night charging).
6Adc * 1.414 = 8.48A RMS.
Comparing Jump Starters
•
Starting Current: In order to compare jump starters it is necessary to look
at the average current at the time of starting at 1V per element. For a 12V
battery that amounts to knowing the current at 6V. An automobile with a petrol
engine consumes approximately 300A at the time of starting (400A with a
diesel engine). For purpose of comparison, an agricultural tractor consumes
approximately 650A.
•
Short-Circuit Current: The value of the short-circuit starting current (under 0V
per element) is usually provided by the manufacturer. It is provided only as an
indication, because under 0V the car’s starter does not turn. For an ABSAAR
SL60 the starting current is 441A and the short-circuit current is 540A.
What Charger
and What Option?
08
Which battery charger for which batteries?
It is absolutely necessary that the battery charger corresponds to the
battery voltage. A battery should be charged slowly and carefully. We
recommend for this reason to divide the ampere hour (Ah) capacity
of the battery by 10 to determine the correct ampere battery rating
(in Adc). This will charge 50% discharged battery within 12 hours (i.e.
overnight charge).
When are 6-volt battery chargers appropriate?
In contrast to a 12-volt battery which has 6 cells of 2 volts each,
a 6 volt a battery contains three cells of 2 volts each. Each
battery must be charged with the correct corresponding battery voltage.
Lawnmowers, scooters, mopeds children’s electric vehicles are
examples of vehicles with small voltage consumption that often use
6 volt batteries. They can also still be found in older automobiles
(old timers) because the much less sophisticated equipment from
earlier time periods had much smaller voltage consumption.
When are 24-volt battery chargers appropriate?
Larger trucks and buses almost always use 24-volt batteries, therefore
requiring the use of a 24-volt battery charger. This type of battery
charger can also be used to charge four 6-volt or two 12 volt batteries
if they are connected in series.
When is a Normal/Fast selection option appropriate?
A battery charger with a normal/fast option has two user selectable
charging currents in which the normal position is approximately half
of the fast position. For example, an 8 ampere battery charger with
a normal/fast switch delivers 8 ampere in the fast position and
approximately 4 ampere in the normal position. The fast position
provides the advantage of charging a battery quickly. Using the normal
position on the same battery the charging current will be halved resulting
in the battery being very slowly and thus very carefully charged.
The more slowly you a charge a battery the better it is for the battery.
When is an Automobile/Motorcycle option appropriate?
A battery charger with an automobile/motorcycle option has the
advantage that it can be used for car batteries as well as for
motorcycle batteries. While car batteries usually have a capacity
in the range of 36 to 88 ampere hours (Ah), motorcycle batteries
have a much smaller capacities of only 9 to 25 Ah, requiring they be
charged with a correspondingly lower charging current. ABSAAR
battery chargers are designed such that switching to the motorcycle
position delivers a 1.6A to 2.0A charging current.
When is a Jump Start option appropriate?
Almost everyone has found themselves in the embarrassing situation
of getting into their vehicle and turning the key only to have nothing
happen, usually at a moment when they are in a particular hurry.
Battery chargers with a jump start options make it possible to start
a discharged battery after only a minimal amount of charging time
by delivering a short burst of power when it is needed to start the
vehicle.
When is a fully-automatic battery charger appropriate?
Electronic (fully-automatic) battery chargers allow the battery to
be charged without the need for supervision. Simply put, unsupervised
charging means your battery cannot be overcharged. Electronic
battery chargers switch from charging mode to maintenance mode
once the desired voltage is reached to maintain the battery’s
voltage at the desired level. This type of battery charger can remain
connected to a battery for very long periods of time without risk that
the battery will be overcharged and are ideal for the winterisation or
storage of batteries. Fully-automatic battery chargers are the ideal
choice for charging and winterisation or storage of caravans, recreation
vehicles, boats, motorcycles or convertible sports cars. Depending on the
model chosen, they charge not only normal lead-acid, but also
maintenance-free, gel and AGM batteries.
When is a maintenance charger more appropriate than a battery
charger with maintenance mode?
A maintenance charger delivers a very small charging current to
maintain the charge of a battery at the maximum level of charge
(assuming the battery is at its maximum charge level when it is
connected) and is capable of remaining connected for long periods of
time without supervision. It should be selected when the desired goal
is simply to maintain the charge of a battery at its current level over
a longer period of time.
3 Zellen a 2 Volt (12 Volt Batterie 6 Zellen a 2 Volt). Jede Batterie
Man findet
à l’usager de sélectionner deux courants de charge différents;
Choice of models and voltages for charging 1 or 2
batteries, or maintenance charging 5 batteries simultaneously.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to recharge deeply
discharged batteries (recover sulfated batteries) it is
necessary to first bring the individual cells up to the
same voltage level. This is ideal for batteries which
have begun a process of sulfating and which will not
normally recharge.
ABSAAR battery chargers use a specialized IoIUoU
charging curve to first disulphide the cells during the
first 10 minutes of the charging cycle. During this process,
individual cells of the battery are first revived to
an equal voltage level by dislodging and dissolving
the molecules that can coat the internal lead plates
to restore these plates to their original condition prior
to commencing the actual charging cycle.
Other battery chargers from others manufacturers use
complicated procedures that can take up to 24 hours
to accomplish the same results.
WICHTIGE HINWEIS: Um tief entladene Batterien
