Sun Resorts
When you read the second number of Sundays you will
understand that life in a hotel means much more than simply
welcoming guests for a few days’ holiday.
When you meet the O’Keeffes at the Sugar Beach you will
see how their annual holiday in Mauritius has become, over
the years, a very special moment which reinforces their sense
of family. With Chef Mauree and his team at
the Sugar Beach, or at the Givenchy Spa at Touessrok,
you will realize that a hotel is also a place where unique and
sophisticated skills and know-how are brought into play.
A hotel may also be the scene of beautiful partnerships
such as that of the starred chefs Michel Rostang and
Michel Chabran of La Pirogue, or the meeting with the
German painter Wolfgang Loesche at Touessrok and
the Kanuhura.
A hotel is also a place which is open to the environment
and the society around it. Gerald Rambert’s magnificent
underwater photographs and the story of a kayaking
expedition among the mangroves in the north-east will, I
hope, be an invitation to discover the island. And, finally,
through the account of our day at the races we are in
fact sharing with you a two-centuries old tradition which
fascinates thousands of Mauritians every week-end at the
Champs de Mars, the oldest race-course in the southern
hemisphere.
We hope you enjoy reading it.
A travers
Ambre on its way
Renovation works have started at Ambre hotel, in Palmar, on
the east coast. Ambre, a four-star, 297 rooms hotel located
on one of the most beautiful stretch of white sand beach of
Mauritius, will open in October 2012.
The new Sun Resorts hotel will offer to its future guests an
easy-going feel, where island living can be experienced at
its best. Interior decorators are bringing in a fresh tropical
experience; optimised use of space is also important,
with importance given to landscaping. But the major feature
of the hotel is a stunning 700-metres long white natural
sandy beach running along a sheltered bay...
DJs’crazy nights
Music has been food for fun this summer in Mauritius with
international DJs who have been hosting fabulous parties
at Le Touessrok and at Long Beach. Miss Rox, DJane of the
show of star presenter Cauet on NRJ 12 in France, was at
Long Beach to celebrate the New Year with a memorable
party on La Piazza. Sabrina Terance, who was recently
ranked 15th in the DJ Top 50 list of DJ Mag, was also at
Long Beach for a gig at Bombora Night Club. But it was
DJ Lucca, from Czech Republic, who usually plays at Space
in Ibiza, who rocked the party with a new Party Island night
True comrades-in-arms, Michel Rostang and Michel Chabran must
have fallen at a tender age into their respective family soup pots, one
in Isère and the other in the Drôme, destined as they were to become
star chefs. La Pirogue has been their favourite exotic haunt for over
twenty years. In between shooting guineafowl in Wolmar and offering
advice on how to cook them in the kitchen, our famous master chefs
submit to our menu of questions.
What are the words that tickle your tastebuds?
The love of good food, curiosity, sharing, palmheart salad with crabmeat and the gratin de chouchou
served at the hotel. (They eat this nearly everyday.)
What annoys you?
Eating “seasonal” produce out of season. Pretentious cooking. You can’t mess about with the
classics!
Should an appetizer keep you quiet or get you talking?
M. Chabran: It should be where conversation begins.
M. Rostang: It shuts you up if it’s no good!
Is it acceptable to order two entrées?
Certainly! Especially here where we get up late: a fine salad followed by smoked marlin.
Truffles are overrated and for snobs, are they not? (Pure provocation as both chefs admit to an
almost religious devotion to the truffles of their home regions.)
M. Rostang: Well, yes. Having them on the menu all year round amounts to a sort of heresy. To
appreciate the truffle you must wait for it and eat it fresh from December to February. We serve
200 kilos of them during that period!
M. Chabran: Worst of all are the synthetic truffle oils – an abomination!
Your favourite sandwich?
M. Rostang: Truffle! Toasted slices of leavened bread generously spread with salted Noirmoutier
butter and filled with truffles sliced to just the right thickness. You let them rest in cling film for
the bread to absorb the flavours. Just before serving, toast on both sides and eat them warm
accompanied by a salad dressed with truffle vinaigrette.
M. Chabran: Michel’s sandwich. In fact we always invite him to our picnics during the season for just
that reason!
Television, the media, chefs themselves – are they dictators of taste?
M. Rostang: Chefs must not be superstars. And above all it is stupid to pretend that anyone can
become a good chef in a matter of months!
M. Chabran: I enjoy the theatrical side of the job. After all, what we do is a show, a production, a
feast for the senses. But you can’t lie to the public!
10 - SUNDAYS MAGAZINE / ISSUE N° 2 APRIL 2012
portraits /
Les petits mots qui chatouillent les
papilles ?
truffe.
M. Chabran : Le sandwich de Michel.
D’ailleurs nous l’invitons à nos pique-niques
en saison rien que pour ça !
Chefs Michel Duo « à La Pirogue » / personnalité
Will provincial France always be the capital of real
cuisine?
Absolutely. The whole of Europe comes to Rungis to choose
from the produce of our rural areas. Our maps with their
meat, fish and poultry are at the same time geographical
maps which are above all a source of useful addresses
leading to friendly encounters with our fantastic farmers
and producers.
What is the best cuisine, outside of France?
M. Chabran: Exotic, Creole, Moroccan… there’s too much
choice!
12 - SUNDAYS MAGAZINE / ISSUE N° 2 APRIL 2012
And if there was just one cheese?
M. Chabran: A fresh goat’s cheese from Ardèche.
M. Rostang: A Beaufort.
Can we really do without wine?
M. Rostang: No, a little glass of white wine is essential.
M. Chabran: A Saint Péray (the most southerly of the Côtes
du Rhône).
Is a dessert indispensable?
M. Rostang: Yes, at tea time for example. In Mauritius I would
choose a rum baba.
M. Chabran: For me, a fine soufflé à la Chartreuse!
Is the terroir a mirror?
M. Rostang: No, it is real life, with all its qualities, a return to the soil.
Mauritius is a place with a real identity. I have been coming here for 30 years –
it’s my exotic homeland!
M. Chabran: It can also be a warning shot, as with the mad cow episode.
The land is an important reference point.
A bottle to take with you to a desert island?
M. Rostang: A Chassagne-Montrachet or a Bâtard-Montrachet. (White wines,
Côte de Beaune, Bourgogne.)
M. Chabran: A magnum of Hermitage (white wine, Rhône valley) with two kilos
of truffles and pink fir apples potatoes from le Touquet! (A variety of potato
grown in France and said to have a special affinity with truffles.)
The O’Keeffe clan’s success story / personnalité
texts by Bertrand Meunier photographs by Elie Bernager
16 - SUNDAYS MAGAZINE / ISSUE N° 2 APRIL 2012
success story /
The O’Keeffe clan
The younger of the two elder
O’Keeffe boys, Callan, could very well
be a future F1 world champion.
He was only 18 months old when he
crawled across the Sugar Beach for the
first time. Since then, the family comes
over every year and would not so much
as dream of staying at another hotel.
They feel so good here!
17
Cianan, Kyran and Nadja
The O’Keeffe clan’s success story / personnalité
Nadja, delightful mum to three boys, has adopted the Sugar Beach
as her home away from home. It is something of a rite; every Christmas,
the O’Keeffes spend two weeks in Flic en Flac. And they look forward to this
trip all year long…
Kyran, the eldest son, is a top class young man with a bright future ahead.
Elegant, lean and dark-haired, he is the captain of his cricket team and the
Peter Attenborough Scholar (Junior Leadership Award) at Charterhouse,
one of the world’s best schools and does not feel at all overshadowed by his
younger brother’s rising fame. Quite the contrary in fact, the brothers have an
indestructible bond.
18 - SUNDAYS MAGAZINE / ISSUE N° 2 APRIL 2012
Callan joined his big brother at the famous English
school as soon as he could. In 2009, the whole family
left Johannesburg and moved to Great Britain in order to
preserve their strong family ties: the O’Keeffes always stand
united. This new beginning created ideal conditions for the
family’s success.
Kyran, who studied philosophy, will soon specialize in sport
management. This moderate and humble 17 year-old, whose
maturity level impresses all who cross his path, is on a fast
track to success. His chosen field of study should keep
him close to pilot brother, Callan, who has just left his Kart
racing glory with a British champion title, to compete on the
Formula BMW Talent Cup circuits, one of F1’s back rooms.
Indeed, Callan O’Keeffe was selected after a test in Estoril
in last November. He is thus amongst the four rookies who
joined the Red Bull Junior Team in 2012.
Callan is an exceptional competitor who does not balk at
any type of physical, mental or technical training to achieve
his goal: to be a F1 World Champion. The objective is set
and this handsome lad is very much in charge of his own
destiny. He is constantly working on it and with unrelenting
tenacity. The weeks following the holidays will be very
hectic ones: school, training, travelling, events, preparation
sessions, etc.
But Callan does not perceive this as a constraint at all; he
thinks it is an amazing opportunity which he could not have
grabbed without such a close-knit and loving family. Alone
at last at a table, the young man, with already a champion
title under his belt, opens up a bit: “I really want my family to
know how much I love them. I do not often say it, so this is a
great opportunity to do so!”
Cianan, the youngest of them all is, at four years old, still a
child. But like his brothers, he has an equally special place in
the O’Keeffe clan. With his little round glasses and Beatles
haircut, we may be here in presence of the family artist,
who knows? Caught up in the family’s whirlwind of success,
he also benefits from a harmonious environment in which
parents serenely share the role of conductor .
© Red Bull
success story /
A weekend at the races / Week-end aux courses / événement
People from all walks of life are packed together in these
upper reaches of Port Louis. Men are jumping up and
down, waving their fists in the air, yelling at the top of
their voices to encourage their favourites. Salvador Dali
passes the winning line, greeted by a delirious hubbub.
His victory is immediately followed by triumphant hugging
and kissing. For a few seconds the thousands of visitors
at the racecourse are in perfect osmosis. Welcome to the
Champ de Mars where the excitement reaches its climax in
December, on the last weekend of the season.
The Mauritian jockey Rye Joorawon awakens the pride of his
fellow citizens by winning the first race this Saturday. Following
the custom, trainer and owners take a few steps with the
winner and its champion jockey under the eyes of the delirious
crowd. The lucky punters run to pick up their winnings and to
put on another bet. The races continue thick and fast, every
thirty minutes.
The sound of the trumpet announces the start of yet another.
At this moment all eyes are riveted on the course or on the
screens which are found all around. As the horses approach the
finish, faces light up and the atmosphere becomes more and more
charged in the grassy expanse at the centre of the course, as well as
in the stands and the boxes.
In the two storeys of private air-conditioned boxes, there is a
different kind of buzz. Guests of the big companies, members of
the Turf Club, owners and their friends share a real day of festivity.
Fashion-conscious women wear hats and dresses for the occasion –
simple, sophisticated or eccentric. The men in their suits chat together,
glasses in their hands, keeping one eye on the race.
This Sunday a prize will be awarded for the finest hat. Elegant ladies
show them off. Nathalie Henry, whose father, Serge, is the owner of one
of the big Mauritian racing stables, will judge the competition together
with a few friends. She wouldn’t miss the races for anything. “It’s one of
the rare occasions when you can really dress up”, she says. Babeth, who
loves horses, has given up all her weekends to the races for the past two
years from April to December. Now a member, she does not expect to
win the contest but adores wearing original outfits. No question though of
giving away the addresses of her favourite boutiques.
A cet instant
The Sun Resorts box, like the others, vibrates to the
rhythm of hooves on the turf. Petits fours and canapés,
TV screens and a bird’s eye view of the course just
beneath – the atmosphere is chic and relaxed and
guests can place their bets on the spot in just a few
seconds. An English couple orders champagne.
Their joyful mood is infectious. These friends of
La Pirogue recall their first visit to the Champ de Mars.
Wearing ordinary clothes, they had not expected such
elegance. This time they have dressed for the occasion.
An Italian lady and her mother also come every year
and are happy to get carried away by the fever of
the races. A lady from Singapore arrives from the
Long Beach where she is staying with her daughter and
daughter-in-law. They are delighted by the ambience
here. Guests come and go constantly, sometimes to
visit the parade ring or to meet friends in the members’
box, where the mood verges on madness when an
outsider springs a surprise at the winning post…
In the wings, the stalls on Shakespeare Street are as busy as a beehive.
The horses, led by their grooms, move around the thirteen stables.
Hooves echo on the tarmac where their metal shoes leave large U-shaped imprints.
The men who work behind the scenes busy themselves with the task of getting
the thoroughbreds ready to come on stage. They are saddled and spruced up
before passing through the electronic control gate at the entrance to the paddock
where their identity is declared.
As they arrive they reverse the flow of visitors from the boxes towards the
paddock. Racing enthusiasts come from all sides to admire these magnificent
mounts, gleaming, muscular, exploding with energy. Yet another race is about
to start. The whole of the Champ de Mars will be shouting encouragement,
until the horses pass the winning post. The last cries to die down will be those
of the winners.
casual chic find form on the canvas
in a beguiling mixture of naiveté and
perhaps what these images of movement
Luminescent blues liberally splashed introduce a lush,
KANAHURA resort in the magical Maldives is where it all
unravels.
The Lhaviyani atoll, to be precise, where this Sun Resorts
seaplane.
Who could resist the allure of getting on one of these
metallic birds in order to find a hidden treasure?
While the average tourist tends to abandon the idea of
such a journey before making it, due to its challenging
tours and detours, the adventurous soul looking for
something different – secluded and exclusive – is not to be
disappointed here.
art in Maldives /
Certainly, world-renowned artist Wolfgang Loesche
did more than simply “make it” to the point of
arrival. He made something out of it – quite literally.
A stunning venue for an art show? It may become
thus. We may wonder where the artwork starts
and ends in the whispers that Loesche inscribes
in graphic details, combining plastic effects and
designer skills. They seem to echo through the
architectural space that hosts them, thus forming
a larger piece that marries nature and culture in
astonishing ways, as the title of this exhibition
condenses in one single word, one magical word:
KANAHURA. A hidden place that opens up to those
who wish to explore its secret nature.
Having already shown artwork at Le Touessrok
in Mauritius in 2008, it is the KANAHURA in the
Maldives that Wolfgang Loesche has recently had
the privilege to treat as both his subject matter
and his hosting place.
One of the triptychs he produces feels like a storyboard
inscribing discrete times on three separate
canvasses: the instant of arriving, the time to
register and, finally, the moment of leaving.
Used to showing in the well-known galleries of
London, the US and Germany, Loesche chose twice
to let himself be taken by the dazzling charm of
Sun Resorts hotels, bringing out and unpacking his
suitcases in the Maldives… emptied out but all the
better for painting.
Echo of a fairy tale, stories within stories, plays
within plays, the process Loesche chooses to
35

adopt is that of a pictorial play between registers and objects that belong inside his
personal universe, that in itself gets transformed as he experiences KANAHURA. The
artist leaves his trace in passing through the fantasy-like reality of the place, happily
superimposing real and unreal via the prism of his own gaze on the enchanting
environment. The compositions produced tend to evoke some of the great British and
American Pop Artists, such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein or David Hockney at
times, but also and in unexpected ways, the paintings of Malcolm de Chazal, or even
closer to us, Jean-Claude Baissac or Firoz Ghanty, to name but a few Mauritian artists
already affected by the ‘pop art’ bug in both its surreal and hyperreal dimensions.
Unexpected – but is it not precisely the point art aims at and touches on when it
succeeds? - yet also unsurprising when we find out that Loesche has spent several
years in Mauritius, where he must surely have, one way or another, come across the
works of some of these Mauritian artists. Or did he?
art in Maldives /
37
Wolfgang Loesche pictures Kanuhura / Art at Kanuhura
Ultimately, it may not matter that much to pinpoint who and
what the actual references are if we consider that images
travel anyway, be it in their formal aspect or their signifying
dimensions, the essence of what they enigmatically convey
moving ever so freely from one artist to the other, and
beyond the restricted circle of the institutionally recognised
art world or, less prosaically, from one being to another.
Loesche’s work takes on the quality of a story. Every
element juxtaposed to another is telling its own tale in each
painting, and in the series that pushes the story-telling
process further, be it with the movement of seaplanes or
sea turtles; man at ease in the wildest and yet most civilised
of environments. Here is presented a view of what can be
seen and experienced at KANAHURA, but it is resolutely
Loesche’s own view that orients it this way or that, for this
is someone who dissects, decomposes, analyses reality
by cutting and pasting it in three movements and often
three main colours around which he constructs his images.
And yet something remains half-said, partly uncovered,
as though the most private side of the artist himself were
kept concealed in the imposing suitcases that keep coming
back as a leitmotiv in his work. This battered and familiar
container, the carrier and the reference point par excellence
when one leaves home, carries at once reminiscence and the
memories of every step away from the familiar. Loesche’s
suitcases bear marks from different travelling episodes, or
so it seems. They appear like massive books that hold the
secret of his own story, a story that remains untold. Truth
be said, perhaps Loesche’s paintings speak of every story
rather than his own. Perhaps his own remains outside of
the paintings, or concealed under the white paint that he
liberally applies to produce gaps in the paintings, thus
giving them more depth. Of course, the artist recomposes
KANAHURA according to his own logic and in his own style.
But even in the richest of games not all cards are played –
discretion and privacy are here guaranteed.
A moins
Mauree Dhoowassen began his gastronomic career
as a kitchen helper at the Royal Palm in 1990. Then
this native of Mauritius rapidly collected all the right
addresses such as the Grand Gaube Hotel and the
Clos Saint Louis in Pailles. A few training periods
abroad brought out his creative instincts – at the
Royal Mirage in Dubai, the Bristol in France and with
Jean Chevel, a starred Parisian chef, as well as in
Singapore and Hong Kong.
As a very young man in the family home he spent
much of his time in his mother’s kitchen where
he learned all the secrets of traditional Mauritian
cookery. After the hotel school he needed plenty
of discipline, research and innovation to be able to
harmonise his knowledge of French, Japanese and
Mauritian cooking.
At midday the mesmerizing turquoise of the lagoon
is like an invitation to enjoy freshly prepared sushis
a tomato gaspacho. Red snapper rolls with palm
hearts and a mango caviar are further proof of the
uncontested talent of Chef Mauree. A waiter brings an
incredible variety of different types of salt to go with
the fish – pink Himalayan, Black Cyprus, Peruvian pink
and grey…
For dessert the sea breeze whispers that we should
try the Coconut Epicurien, an absolute wonder.
And for chocolate addicts, the Parfait de Chocolat
Victor Dubuisson, the white hope of
French professional golf, now officially
represents the exceptional 18-hole
course designed by Bernhard Langer
for Le Touessrok on the Ile aux Cerfs.
This young native of Cannes will bear
the colours of the hotel throughout the
season on the European circuit.
Victor discovered Mauritius, Le Touessrok
and its fabulous golf course through his
godfather who is a frequent visitor to
the hotel and a great golf enthusiast.
Ever since, he has been coming back
regularly to practice but also to compete
in the Standard Bank Mauritius Open
which took place in December 2011 on
the Ile aux Cerfs.
He has a special affection for this course – he appreciates
the pleasant tranquility of the place, on an island in the
magnificent lagoon of Trou d’Eau Douce, as much as the
challenges linked to its very special topography. Maybe
they have in common the unique characteristic of what has
to be worked for and is not easily tameable. Elegant and
charismatic, Victor is an intuitive player who much prefers
action on the fairways and greens to long hours of practice.
He turned pro in 2010 after reaching the
world No 1 spot as an amateur in 2009.
He continues to surprise with his inborn
qualities. Nicknamed Mozart by his trainer,
he has one of today’s most effective
drives, regularly hitting over 300 meters.
His performance at putting and short
game are also excellent. Although he
needs more experience in the major
events of the European Tour, Victor is
a champion in the making with an innate
talent which should lead him rapidly to
a first victory on the Tour
In spite of a recurrent back injury in 2011,
this former amateur world champion has
had several promising results in Europe, as
well as finishing ninth in the Qatar Masters
last February and fifth in the 2011 Austrian
Golf Open.
This year again he will return to Mauritius
to take part in the fourth edition of the
Standard Bank Mauritius Open from the
9th to the 16th of December, which will
bring together many players from the
European Tour and the South African
Sunshine Tour on the Touessrok course.
portrait /
Blue Bay Palace
de Natacha Appanah
texts by Ariana Cziffra photographs by © Éditions Gallimard
Natacha Appanah’s
culture / books
Blue Bay Palace
At first glance, Blue Bay Palace could read as a literary
version of a Bollywood-type movie or a variation on the
West Side Story theme. And yet, as a writer of fiction,
Natacha Appanah graciously succeeds in avoiding easy
caricatures. Rather than surfing over clichéd themes, she
seems more inclined to play with the ambiguous and
ambivalent dimensions of her characters. Her particular
way of working through their human dramas introduces
psychological depth to her novel. She goes straight to the
essence of tragedy in a mere hundred pages. This story
reads quickly, but stays with you for a long time. Isn’t that
what good writing does to a reader, despite the actual
thickness of the book? Those who judge this story too thin
or too short may also be disappointed by the fact that it
does not gratify the reader with a perfectly happy ending.
Blue Bay Palace becomes an entirely different story when
one realises that it is precisely about division, deception and
disappointment. Three dimensions through which Appanah
cuts out a tailor-made piece with remarkable verve.
Sociocultural imperatives and subjective impossibilities
collide in this tale of passionate love and death. Maya, whose
name means illusion, is the female character whose narrative
voice is the very ‘stuff’ that
gives the novel its rough
texture. Being born out of a
love that transgressed the
boundaries of caste and class,
and thus divided at the core
of her being, it is impossible
for her to identify with
anything other than the act of
love itself, and with its hateful
side. She is made of untamed
real rather than bearing the
constructed image of a “known” social identity.
As a result, she bears no symbolic name, she is an x within
an enigmatic equation, unlike Dave, her beloved, who
is a Rajsing. He, in contrast to her, is clearly identified
as belonging to a particular clan, the Brahmins, that he
nonetheless does not fit in very well. Because the image—
his own and that of his family—has to look nice and neat
at all costs, he is prepared to compromise the truth of
his desire in order to remain honourable. Honourable in
the eyes of the society, that is. But Maya bears a radically
different position. Compromising is not an option for her. As
such, she comes to embody a literal split. Blue Bay Palace
only serves to set the stage where, to start with, love, lure
and lust catch her fancy.
question ?
63
Natacha Appanah’s Blue Bay Palace / Blue Bay Palace de Natacha Appanah
Deprived of subjective means to acknowledge, work through
and overcome the fact that she had been falling in love
with an illusion, her own broken image will push her to put
the body—her own and that of the other—to the test of her
own unlimited drives. But it is not her beloved that she will
attack. Rather, it is the other woman, the one who has come
to take the place she desperately wanted to occupy, that
she will mistreat and crush to the bones. Yet that “other”
is nothing but her own inverted image in the mirror that
she lacks.
The fact that this story addresses a timeless human
problematic inscribes its stakes within a universal frame.
It could have been taking place anywhere in the world. It
happens to be set in the author’s birthplace, the southern
part of Mauritius. That is perhaps what enables her to lead
her reader into an adventure whose scenery she is well able
to describe. But as much as the backgrounds explored are
familiar enough to her,
she also has the precious
distance of the one who
has left, travelled, and
who returns with another
gaze. She interrogates the
notion of the “exotic” as
she now apprehends the once familiar as a foreign land. Her
fleshing out issues of inside and outside, of closed spaces
and (im)possible exits crystallises in the in extremis that
both Maya and her motherland come to incarnate.
64 - SUNDAYS MAGAZINE / ISSUE N° 2 APRIL 2012
But it is not her beloved
that she will attack.
By unravelling Maya’s destiny, Natacha Appanah is doing
much more than exposing the pathos of a particular
woman. Or rather, the character’s paranoid acts cannot
be disentangled from the maddening effects of a
perverse norm whose basis lies on a mere image instead
of encouraging people to dig up substance from reality
and take subjective desires on board. Since the female
character’s crisis coincides with the male character’s
sacrificing of his desire for the sake of his mother’s
whimsical wish, an oedipal logic traverses the entire book.
Though written in very contemporary style, Blue Bay
Palace bears the mark of the greatest Greek tragedies
and Shakespearian plays. Indeed, whilst Dave bears an
affinity to Oedipus or Hamlet, Maya as a Bearer of the
Unbearable is the one who, like Antigone, reveals the
truth of her desire and is prepared to pay the price for it.
The disheartening hypocrisy of her lover contributes in
triggering her madness. However apparently divided by
the persona she keeps up for some time at her workplace,
with her smile and polite manners, Maya ends up whole, at
one with herself and with the ocean she melts into, within
which she briefly regains the illusion of a certain freedom.
The ecstatically liberating experience described in the
novel’s paradoxical resolution may well be read as a radical
wish, on the author’s part, to symbolically kill the madness
of those social norms that fail to really take desire and
difference on board.
But this is a subjective
interpretation, and in
fact, the ending remains
enigmatic enough
for everyone to make
of it what they will.
This novel is for those
who are willing to see beyond appearances, for “the most
important”, says Saint-Exupéry in The Little Prince, “is
invisible to the eyes”.
Natacha Appanah does not only see through the cracks
in mind and bodyscapes, she writes from there. And it’s
cracking good. A real trip.
And it’s cracking good.
A real trip
culture / books
For over ten years, Patrick Haberland has been
practicing the sport of sea kayaking, doing trips
around Mauritius and Rodrigues. He is just back
from Jersey, where he followed a very specialised
training course so as to be able to venture into
the open sea around the coast with small groups
of enthusiasts. If you are tempted, he can offer
you a programme to suit your needs, a sporting
experience guaranteed to amaze you and to offer
a complete change of scene.
But today we shall be content with an outing to the
Ile d’Ambre, a mini-adventure which turns out to be
disconcertingly easy. For half a day, at a few hundred metres
from the coast at Grand Gaube, the mangroves with their
extremely rich ecosystem offer the perfect playground for
children and adults alike.
With a few strokes of the paddle, these kayaks which are
specially designed for the sea glide rapidly into the heart of
The mangroves with their extremely
rich ecosystem offer the perfect
playground for children
and adults alike.
the mangrove. The blue of the lagoon quickly changes to a
dark green labyrinth where our laughter is the only sound.
We are alone in the world! To get here you just have to meet
Patrick at the Goodlands supermarket at 9 am. He buys
whatever is needed for the trip which will end at 1 pm or
3 pm depending on whether you choose to have lunch on the
Ilot Bernache or not.
It is utterly peaceful inside the mangroves. The wind has died
down and fish appear among the roots. It’s the right moment
to do some diving with mask and tube, to get to know this
very unfamiliar ecosystem. The life-size aquarium lives up to its
promise: the activity underwater is in complete contrast with
the calm of the surface. The children are filled with wonder.
From the age of four or five they can share a double kayak
with a grown-up and have a real adventure!
The Ile d’Ambre, the largest island in the lagoon of Mauritius
with its 144 hectares, has a story to tell to its visitors – that of
the wreck of the Saint-Géran in 1744, which led the governor of
the country to build a small residence and plant some coconut
trees so as to make the island and its reefs more visible to
ships. Walking around the ruins and exploring the protected
vegetation of this reserve is like going back in history to
colonial times. Much of the island has been reforested and as
we wander around it we discover some strange craters as well
as caves with freshwater springs. It feels like a different world.
The time passes quickly. To make the excursion last a little
longer we stop on the way back on the fine sandy beach of the
tiny Ilot Bernache for a bite to eat. It’s 3 pm and the sun is still
hot. In fact this wonderful day is only just beginning…
Île d’Ambre, the largest
lagoon island in Mauritius,
with 356 acres, is expecting
explorers to tell them a
story.
végétation protégée, reboisée, on découvre quelques cratères
At the Givenchy Spa of the Touessrok hotel, a range of « made in
se conjuguent aux huiles essentielles « made in Mauritius »
Nestled within Le Touessrok in Trou d’Eau Douce, the
luxury Givenchy Spa offers a wide variety of massages,
body wraps, facials and health-enhancing body treatments.
Among the twenty-five options that can be mixed and
matched, we highly recommend the new Exclusive
Treatment, a unique blend of Givenchy massage techniques
and natural Mauritian products.
The Givenchy Spa experience is truly spectacular. As one
arrives, a tropical patio catches the eye. Behind the glass
pane, sculptural objects serve to frame a picture whose
design revisits the Art Deco style in contemporary ways.
74 - SUNDAYS MAGAZINE / ISSUE N° 2 APRIL 2012
On the other side, a selection of perfume bottles, coloured
glass vases and photographs perch prettily on tables in front
of the patio, as if in silent dialogue with the plants and trees
that stand all around.
Contrasting dark wood colours and transparency effects,
the corridors can seem endless, but set the scene with class
and elegance. Indeed, before reaching the private room
where the mixture of sea salt or grainy sugar with oils will
be made on the spot, one passes by fashion designs printed
onto huge white Perspex panels, unusually shaped perfume
bottles delicately posed onto glass and mirror shelves,
tropical wooden walls and original watercolour paintings.
Every item bearing Givenchy’s signature contributes to
set the mood by ravishing the eyes first, then mind, body
and soul slowly becoming enraptured into the exquisite
experience of the treatment itself, and its enriching aftereffects.
spa Givenchy
essences & senses / spa Givenchy
At one end of this cave-like space, hidden behind the
changing rooms, lies the sauna. One can choose to step
in there before or after a treatment. A comfortable robe is
provided in order for you to move between the rooms. The
person who is about to treat you waits outside till you are
ready, and then takes you to the room where the body scrub
will be performed.
The Exclusive Treatment lasts two hours and is divided
into three parts. To begin with, a foot bath in beautiful,
hibiscus flower-filled water. The hibiscus returns at different
stages of this particular treatment, be it in its natural form,
as an essential oil, or as a herbal tea that concludes the
experience.
Mixing opulently with soft ambient music, the aroma all
around is of essential oils made from Mauritius grown
Hibiscus, White Frangipani, Coco Vanilla, Ylang-Ylang, or
else simply orange and lavender.
The mixing technique transmitted by Givenchy is used with
a range of essential oils extracted from Mauritian plants, and
with other Mauritian elements such as sugar or sea salt.
The making of these new products is unique: it can only
be experienced at the Touessrok Givenchy Spa, where it is
crafted in front of your eyes with a knowhow that combines
the best of different worlds into something truly unique.
76 - SUNDAYS MAGAZINE / ISSUE N° 2 APRIL 2012
The face and body scrub prepares the skin to receive the
other treatments. With exfoliating and invigorating effects,
the sea salt is coarse compared to the sugar grains, and
more adapted to men’s skin. Women tend to prefer the
sugar scrub option, but this depends on individual choice.
Going for this package is a very special treat since one gets
to participate by choosing one’s favourite ingredients and
scents from the start.
Next step: a bath. Lasting about twenty minutes, during
which water jets gently massage the body, the candlelit
space immerses you in a soft and calming atmosphere while
your body gets rehydrated and regenerated. Again, the
essential oil of your choice is added in, allowing you to enjoy
both its perfume and specific properties.
The final part is the massage with hot almond oil mixed
with your third choice of essential oil, followed by a facial
massage that can be made either with oil or with a Givenchy
Hydrating Cream. You are then taken to a relaxing room
where delicious Hibiscus tea is served, hot or cold, with
sugar. It is a time to really unwind and enjoy the effects of
the whole treatment.
When leaving, a natural moisturising cream bar including
the essential oil of your choice is given to you. Cleansed,
nurtured and utterly relaxed, what more could one wish for?
spa Givenchy
