PERSEVERATION AND STRESS
AS A LINK BETWEEN ILLNESS
REPRESENTATIONS AND
SOMATIC COMPLAINTS
The purpose of the study was to investigate the
relationship between perseverative thoughts and
somatic complaints, and the possible mediating
eff ects of perceived stress, perseveration in
undergraduate students. Participants completed
an adapted version of the Brief Illness Perception
Questionnaire (B-IPQ) and measures assessing
somatization, percevied stress and perseveration.
Regression analysis suggested that impact of specifi c
negative illness representations on somatoform
complaints were mediated by trait-like perseverative
thoughts and perceived stress. Our results highlight
that negative illness representations are relevant
processes in health and can be potential targets
in prevention and intervention programmes.
Further research should examine the value of the
CSM in explaining the relationship between illness
perception, perseveration, somatic health among
adults.
