KerjayaBy: Hazila Kadir@ ShaharIused to be a bookwormonce especially when I wasin school but later on whenhaving been busy working with kidsaround me, I am not able to continuemy reading habit. Until one day, when my sister showed me a novelentitled ‘Ayat-ayat Cinta’ writtenby an Indonesian novelist namelyas Habiburrahman El Shirazy, I wassurprised to see myself regaining mypassion and zest for reading.I was spending my time readingfrom page to page and every singleword he puts into his book hasinspired me a lot. I agree with mysister‘s opinion on how his story cangive us inspirations and motivationespecially when looking at allaspects of life. I then bought myselfhis another novel called ‘DalamMihrab Cinta’, which again givesme an aspiration to appreciatelife more and I am now continuebuying another one called ‘KetikaCinta Bertasbih’ which guides meto be more optimistic in acceptingfate. How does this writer able toconvince people like me readingstories that he created probablyby his imagination? How could aperson like me who has no time toread, able to complete thousandspages within a few days? That hasmade me wonder, but later on, Irealise that he has a unique abilityin writing that other people maynot have. Someone who has gottalents in persuading other people18Writing As A Career:Creativity And WisdomPaid OffCAHAYA | November-Disember 2009to read his or her masterpiecemay have wonderful thoughts andshould deserve to get recognitionfrom others especially from his or herfans. That is only one writer that I havementioned so far. What about theothers? Have you ever wonderedhow J. K Rowling able to get moneyonly based on her Harry Porter’s seriesthat she created by her fantasy? From a just common housewife whohad once suffered in hardships, she would be able to transformherself to a billionaire whose moneymay probably not finish evenuntil her seventh generation. Hermasterpiece is superb and admiredby most of her fans regardless ofages especially for those who crazeof waiting her ‘Harry Porter’ seriesyear to year. You will see how powerful wordscould be and that is probably oneof the reasons why certain peoplewould choose writing as theircareers. A nice young lady with anickname ‘Damya Hanna’ is alsoone of examples of a good writer. One thing that interests me abouther is that she chooses writing evenshe has graduated from universitywith a degree from a different field. Her novels are fabulous, blend withstories of life and love, which mayattract youngsters who show interestsin modern yet meaningful lifestyles. How do these people survivewith writing? I guess, one thing thatthey share in common is their willsand desire to write, to share andto spread knowledge and alsoimagination to others. Some writersdo writing just to fill in their time or justfor fun.I am sure that if you have shownsome interests in writing, you mustwant to put forward some steps.Even though not many people havetalents in writing, I believe the talentcan be polished because all of ushave a story to tell and all of us havethe power to write something that isuniquely different. Nowadays, thereare many ways to help us achievingwhat we want. If there is a will, there isa way. You just name it! There are toomany writing workshops availablethroughout the country and printedmaterials are vastly accessible toguide you in writing. All you have todo is practise and practise. Practicemakes perfect. Creativity in writingwill be grasped over time. Anothercrucial part that you need to haveis interest. Without interest, you maydo writing half way and becomingde-motivated once you fail. Lack ofinterests also will lead you to givingup, which is definitely NO for a writer. You may also need commitmentwhen writing, without commitment, you will not be trusted by eitheryour employers or your fans. As awriter, meeting deadlines is the mostcrucial part of the job. Thereforeyou need to give full commitmentin completing your task within thetime limit. In addition, you may alsonot to be choosy in grabbing writingopportunity given to you. Even if youare given small columns to handle, grab it as an opportunity to improveyour skills. Those are only my generalobservation on characteristics ofa writer. There are lots more. Othernecessary traits are the ability toexpress ideas clearly in writing, goodjudgement, creativity, self motivationand curiosity. Having been a parttime writer myself, I realise theimportant of those traits because

Others may sometimes relyon you to give them guidance andadvice based on story you havewritten.Sadly, not many parentsencourage their children to enter thefield of creative writing. Instead theyare pressurised to become engineers, doctors, lawyers and charteredaccountants because these, theybelieve, are the professions thatattract the big bucks. I rememberedone story that I watched long timeago about a frustrated young manwho had been rejected from hismarriage proposal over a girl justbecause he was a writer. The fatherof his beloved claimed that he couldnot sustain a family life just by writing. With an intentional heart and will, helater on became a very successfulwriter which then gave a sense ofregret to the father. We should neverunderestimate this job. We shouldby now realise that writing not onlyinvolves a man with a pen andpaper or perhaps nowadays a manwith a laptop, together with a story toshare, however it is more than that.Creative writing has a wide rangeof scope. One can be a journalist,an editor, a technical writer, a shortstory writer, a novelist, a playwrightand also a copywriter. All possibilitiesare endless. You can even be aninvestigative journalist who wouldwrite any news happened aroundyou without having to be tooimaginative. Those journalists merelyreporting reality events, written in anunconventional style which peopleread every day in the newspapers.Do all of these give you an idea onwhich writing job interests you more?Make a choice and off you go withit!Let me brief you some of theroutines that you may expect in yourdaily life as a writer.A writer’s work can include:• Creating original works e.g.:prose, poetry, song lyrics, plays etc• Proposing topics aboutwhich to write and receivingassignments• Gathering info about thetopic• Selecting and organizing thematerial he or she hasgathered• Using the written wordto express ideas and conveyAn editor’s work can include:• Reviewing, rewriting andediting the work of writers• Planning the content ofbooks, journals andmagazines• Deciding what material willappeal to readers• Reviewing and editingdrafts of books and articles• Offering comments toimprove the work• Suggesting possible titles• Overseeing the productionof publications• Reviewing book proposalsand deciding whether tobuy the publication rights. You may now know some ofthe nature of this job but may nowwonder if there is educationalrequirements for writers and editors.Nowadays, for your information, many employers prefer to hire writersand editors with a college degree, generally in communications,English or journalism. Employersmay require writers and editors whoare specialised in a particular fieldto have a degree in the field theyrequire and this is particularly true fortechnical writers.Just in case you want animmediate gratification, a writingor editing job with a small companyis right for you.
