StayMotivated!Keep Your Brain Alive!NeurobicsWhat are neurobics? Essentially brain exercises. The term was invented by Lawrence Katz andManning Rubin to describe exercises that help the brain stay fit. By doing these exercises yourbrain will be challenged by a task that's different, interesting, fun and potentially frustrating. Ifyou feel awkward and frustrated don't worry, your brain is learning a new skill.Top 8 Neurobic Exercises12345678Television FunThis one is not only fun, but good for stimulating creativity. You simply turn the volume off on televisionand invent the dialog based on what you see the characters doing. If you do this with a friend you caneach play various roles.Have A Half-Speed DayTry this one on a day when you aren't going to work. The idea is to move at half your normal speed (if youare normally slow, you may want to try a double-speed day). This obviously requires concentration. Youwill become much more aware of actions that normally are mostly unconscious.Learn Sign LanguageLearning to talk with you hands definitely "involves one or more of your senses in a new context" (one ofthe rules of good neurobic exercises). If time is limited, you can learn just the basics, like how to sayhello, tell someone your name, and spell out words. In larger cities, some deaf people sell a smallpamphlet that teaches these basics.Shop In New PlacesTry a new store when you go shopping. It could be a new grocery store, just so you have to think to findyour way around. It could also be a different kind of store that you would normally never visit.Swap HandsUse your non-dominant hand to brush teeth, eat food, brush hair or write. At Work:Move your wastebasket. It's amazing to realize how routine your life is - for hours you'll be throwing apiece of paper at the floor because the wastebasket used to be in that space! Or try rearranging yourdesk. It forces you to form a new mental map so you don't just unconsciously reach for things.Coming Home:Find your house key and fit it into the lock using your sense of touch, rather than sense of sight. At Dinner Time:Change where everyone sits at the table. You don't realize how rigid and routine things have become untilyou change the order of seating at the dinner table. Suddenly, the wrong person is sitting there and youpass things the wrong way and conversation flows differently. Of course, I wouldn't do it with very youngkids - they need predictability. But if you have older children or if it's just you and your spouse, changewhere people have their place at the table by 180 degrees.source: www.increasebrainpower.com/neurobics.htmlsource: http://www.10ac.com/neurobic.htm58.Seedlink July - October, 2009
