Of
the different kinds of Sea-Tortoife,
vcith their properties in general.
„.JHE Sea Tortoife is by our failors
Sλ vulgarly called Turtle, whereof there
are four diftincT: kinds : the Green
Turtle, the Hawks-bill, the Logger-
head-Turtle, and the Trunk-Turtle.
They are all eatable ; but the Green-
Turtle is that which all the maritime inhabitants in
America, that live between the Tropkhs, fubfift
much upon. They much excel the other kinds of
Turtle, and are in great efteem for the wholefome
and agreeable food they afford.
All forts of Turtle, except the Loggerhead-Turtle,
are timorous and make little refiftance when
taken; but in time of coition all the kinds are
male
>.
very furious and regardlefs of danger the
copulates by the help of two horns or claws under
his fore-fins, by which he holds and clings to the
that they regard none that approach them, but will
drop their eggs in a hat, if held under them ; but
if they are difturbed before they begin to lay, they
will forfake the place and feek another. They lay
the fun, which is ufually performed in about three
weeks.
Des différentes efpeces de Tortues de Mer,
la Tortue de Mer Turtle : il y en a
quutres efpeces différentes, la Tortue
Franche, -le Caret, la Caouanne, à?
le Coffre. Elles font toutes bonnes
à manger ; mais la Tortue franche
'The Green-Turtfe.
THERE are great plenty of this kind of Turtle amofigft the
Bahama IJlanis ; yet none breed there ; they corne from Cuba
and the continent. Their eggs, which differ much, and are plainly
there-, whereas moll: of thefe idands do plentifully abound with the
eggs of the others. This kind is preferred to the reft, and is efteemed
a very wholefome and delicious food : it receives its name from the
fat of it, being of a green colour. Sir Hans Shane has informed us,
in his natural hiftory of Jamaica, that forty floops are employed by
the inhabitants of Port- Royaim Jamaica for the catching them : their
markets are fupplied with Turtle as ours in England are with butchers
meat. The Bahamians carry many of them to Carolina, where they
turn to good account; not becaufe that plentiful country wants prOvifion,
but they are efteemed there as a rarity, and for the delicacy of
their flefii. Thefe feed on a kind of grafs growing at the bottom of
Of the Manner of taking turtle. De la manière de prendre là Tortue.
âSUpH^HE inhabitants of the Bahama Iflands
^^S by often practice are very dextrous
in catching them, particularly the
Green Turtle. In April they go in
to and from their nefts 5 at which time they turn
them on their backs, where they leave them* and
proceed on turning all they meet ; for they cannot
set on their feet again when once turned. Some
are fo large that it requires three men to turri one of
them. The way by which Turtle are moft commonly
taken at the Bahama Iflands^ is* by ftriking
times half an hour before he is tired ; then he finks
at once to the bottom, which gives them an oppor-
tunity of ftriking him, which is by piercing the
fhell of the Turtle through with the iron peg,
which ftp out of the focket, but i s fattened by a
ftrina to the pole. If he is fpcflt and tired by
being long pûrfued, he tamely fubm.ts when ftruck
to be taken into the boat or hauled a-(hore. 1 here
are men, who, by diving, wiU get on their backs
and by preffing down their hind-part, and raifing
P- 39
'or'ce de s'ye être exercés, les habitons
des Iles Baha.na font fort adroits à
toutes celles qu'ils recontrent, car elles ne peuvent
pas
