1 Preludio
ATTO PRIMO
All’alzarsi della
Luce d’alba.
Dell’estasi e col vol
De’ fatidici alcioni,
E coll’aurora fulgida del sol.
L’inno s’innalzi per l’etra serena,
Astro di suoni dall’amor sospinto.
Spiri eolio flauto e l’avena
Fanfara sacra.
Sull’altar.
Fra i libami, i fiori, i carmi
Col divino
Riso, Venere, a bearmi
Vien dal mar.
Fa che s’orni del tuo raggio
La mia fronte;
Fa che splenda in me il miraggio
Dell’amor.
Così in vetta all’aspro monte
Fra il selvaggio
Dumo, nasce il fonte,
Sbuccia il fior.
5 Or s’inneggi ai mortali. Il tempio e l’urbe
Odan la voce mia. V’alzate, o turbe.
(il Coro si alza – Ariofarne, accennando Leandro)
Al vincitor delle afrodisie, al prode
Trionfatore del combattuto stadio
Ergete un’ode:
A Leandro d’Abìdo.
Prelude
ACT ONE
THE TEMPLE OF VENUS
In the back, a section of the porch annexed to Venus’s temple; on the right, the
pronaos. The scene is outdoors. Myrtles, cypresses, plane trees and oleanders.
In the middle is a statue of Venus, on the right one of Apollo. The pronaos’ door
is open, and an altar is before it. In the back, through the columns, one can
glimpse the calm sea and the horizon. The star of Venus glitters in the sky. It is
the Aphrodisias, the festivities in honour of the goddess. When the curtain rises,
the Chorus is kneeling before the door of the temple, in adoration. Wreathes, offers,
chalices, shells, branches of myrtle have been placed on the threshold of
the temple. It is dawn.
First Scene
Chorus of Priestesses and Sailors.
2 Priestesses - Heavenly Venus Urania!
Sailors - Venus of the sea!
Priestesses - Venus of Cyprus!
Sailors - Kythira!
Priestesses - Aphrodite!
Sailors - Astarte!
Priestesses - Star!
Sailors - Queen!
All - Goddess!
Let our hymn rise through the paths of the heavens
with the smoke of myrrh and of incense,
with the notes that resound from the eternal cithara
of the immense orb,
and with visions
of ecstasy and the flight
of fatal halcyons,
and with the cold dawn of the sun.
Let the hymn rise up through the calm heavens,
star of sounds driven by love.
Let the Aeolian flute sing and Cybele’s pipes
and let the rippling sea
palpitate like a heart
The amphorae, the harps, the altars
be decked with garlands and flowers.
Scene II
Sacred fanfare. Enters Ariofarne; he is followed by Hero and some priestesses,
Leander, dressed in Asian fashion, and some fighters. The chorus prostrate
themselves before Ariofarne, who stops before the statue of the goddess; the
fanfare falls silent. Ariofarne, Hero, Leander, Sailors, Priestesses.
3 Ariofarne - Let the music of the sacred trumpets cease
and sacred silence follow. The dawn
now rises in the sky, and this is the last dawn
that will see the sacred annual rite.
(to a priest)
Take the golden chalice
and fill it to the brim with Lian wine.
(to Hero)
Bring the myrtle.
(lifting the chalice and the myrtle)
that the queen of Gnido and Amatonta
will look with favour on us whilst I shed the offering.
(he pours wine on the altar)
4 O goddess, I pour sacred wine
over altar and marble
and I raise the august chalice
over the altar.
Midst libations, flowers, and singing
with her divine smile
Venus rises from the sea
to charm me.
Let your light shine
on my brow.
Let the mirage of love
shine in me.
Thus on the rough mountain peak
in the wild Dumo
let the spring arise,
the flower bloom.
5
Let us now praise the mortals. May temple and town
hear my voice. Let the crowd rise up.
(The Chorus rise – Ariofarne, indicating Leandro)
and sing a hymn of glory
to the hero of the cithara and the sword,
to the proud victor
of the stadium’s trials:
to Leander of Abydos.
(to Hero)
Marinai - A Leandro d’Abìdo alloro e palme!
Rapisce l’alme.
A Leandro d’Abìdo e palme e allor!
Leandro - Coronatrice mia, più eletto vanto
Giammai quaggiù trionfator non ebbe.
E tanta possa la tua man mi crebbe,
Che al tuo parlar risponderò col canto.
(piglia la cetra)
M’arde talor disio di cantar l’ira
Del divino Pelide,
Ma la cetra sospira:
Amore! Allor dello scettrato Atride
Insidiatore,
Sempre la cetra mi sospira: Amore!
Sacerdotesse ed Ero -
E tu canta l’amor, mentre d’intorno
Ti pingerem sorrisi
D’intenti visi
Pioveano i sogni d’or.
Ed ecco al mio tugurio
Batte gemendo Amor:
Apri la porta, è torbida
La luna e l’aer crudo;
Son fanciulletto e nudo,
Così non mi lasciar,
Fa ch’io m’avvivi al tiepido
Raggio del focolar.
Pietà mi spinse, al pargolo
Trassi, ei ver me movendo
Ne lo vedea, piangendo,
Scarmigliato il crin.
Io lo conforto e suscito
La vita al fanciullin.
Ma come appena ei vedesi
Del suo dolor discarco,
Ecco, ei s’avventa all’arco,
Teso ver me lo tien,
Scocca la freccia… e il perfido
Già mi ha trafitto il sen.
Coro - A Leandro d’Abìdo alloro e palme!
Rapisce l’alme.
A Leandro d’Abìdo e palme e allor!
Ariofarne - Ite, sacerdotesse, a rinnovare
L’offerta della mirra e dell’incenso,
Alimenti dell’are,
Affinchè denso
Salga il fumo all’altare.
Io sento
Un’aura dolce, prenunzia del Nume,
Quasi aliar di ventilar piume.
Questo il momento
È degli uffici arcani.
(a Ero)
Ero, qui resta tu.
(ai marinai, al popolo)
Ite, profani.
Scena III
Ero, Ariofarne.
7 Ariofarne - Donna, hai scelto? Manifeste
Sono tue mire? Il cor ti mena
Alla Venere celeste,
O alla Venere terrena?
Parla.
Ero - Ho scelto. Aspiro all’ombra
Del sidereo e casto vel,
Che il pudico grembo adombra
Della Venere del ciel.
Ariofarne - Bada, o folle!
3
You, the fairest of the graceful chorus,
with the fairest of your wreaths
now crown the young man’s head.
(Ero places a laurel wreathe on Leandro’s head,
while the chorus sing)
Sailors - To Leander of Abydos the laurel and palms!
He conquers hearts
with fury and with love.
To Leander the laurel and palms!
Leander - Never did a victor receive
a crown from such noble hands.
And such strength has your hand given me,
that I will reply with song to your words.
(he picks up a cithara)
I would sing of the anger
of divine Achilles,
but my cithara sighs:
Love! I would sing of the sovereign Atreus’
shield and quiver,
But again my cithara
sighs: Love! And in vain do I change my plectrum
and my voice and song
and the charming rhythm,
Again my cithara sighs: Love!
Priestesses and Hero -
Then sing of love, whilst all around
our faces
will paint smiles
and while the daylight breaks.
6 Leander - It was night; dark clouds
wandered through the sky,
while over beds and cradles
golden dreams rained down.
And then at my humble door
came Love and knocked:
Open the door, the moon
is veiled and the air is cold;
I am young and naked,
do not leave me thus,
let me warm myself
in the heat of your fire!
I was moved by pity
and took the child in.
He stepped towards me, weeping,
his hair all ruffled.
I comforted him
and gave life anew to the child.
But no sooner than
his sorrow left him,
he drew his bow
towards me.
He loosed an arrow… and the traitor
pierced my breast.
Chorus - To Leander of Abydos the palms and laurels!
He conquers hearts
with fury and with love.
To Leander of Abydos the palms and laurels!
Ariofarne - Go now, priestesses, and renew
the offering
of myrrh and of incense,
Let the incense
rise from the altar.
But I forbid you to return before
the sacred trumpets sound, it would be ill-omened
to enter here before this signal.
the priestesses leave)
I feel a sweet air,
announcing the arrival of the god,
almost a flutter of light feathers.
This is the moment
of the secret offices.
(to Hero)
Hero, you stay here.
(to the sailors and people)
Profane people away now.
Scene III
Hero, Ariofarne.
7 Ariofarne - Woman, have you chosen?
Are your intentions clear? Does your heart
call you to celestial Venus
or to the worldly Venus?
Speak.
Hero - I have chosen. I aspire to the shade
of the chaste, celestial veil,
which hides the modest breast
of celestial Venus.
Ariofarne - Beware, oh foolish maid!
E non paventi
D’Ariofarne il genio fiero?
Tu non sai che fiel diventi
Un amor deriso e altero.
(ironicamente)
Tortorella! Dal tuo nido
Scacci l’avido sparvier?...
Ho gli artigli e ti conquido,
Su di te saprò cader.
Ero - (serenamente)
Quella fulgida fiammella
Vedi là sul mar che danza?
È di Venere la stella,
È una stella di speranza.
Del suo lume circonfusa
Un’ aura al cor mi vien,
Una pace ampia e diffusa
In un fulgido seren.
Ariofarne - (con ira)
Pensa, pensa, la folgore romba!
Pensa pria che s’arresti la sorte.
Ero - (sdegnosa)
Ariofarne - Son l’arconte possente e selvaggio,
Fu più volte il mio sdegno fatal.
Ero - (fa per uscire) Nulla io temo.
M’illumina un raggio che non spegne
Possanza mortal.
Ariofarne - Ferma! Un ultimo istante. Deh! aspetta!
Mi sorridi, sembiante divin!
Vuoi vendetta od amor?
Ero - Vendetta!
Ariofarne - (con accento fatale)
È segnato il tuo buio destin.
Scena IV
Ero sola.
Assorta ne’ suoi pensieri s’avvia verso l’altare.
8 Segnato è il mio destino?! Ei lo ha segnato,
Quell’uomo malvagio?!
poi l’avvicina all’orecchio)
9 Conchiglia rosea
Del patrio lido,
Piccolo nido
Del vasto mar.
Dell’alma Venere
Culla e flottiglia,
Rosea conchiglia.
In te ricirculano
Mille volute
Che fan che mormorino
Fin l’aure mute.
Tu canti e sfolgori,
Coro fra i cori,
Oro fra gli ori
Del sacro altar.
L’api che ronzano
Fra gli oleandri,
Ne’ tuoi meandri
Odonsi ancor.
Un trillio eolio
In te bisbiglia,
Rosea conchiglia.
Entro ti palpitano
Le nettunine
Ninfe, che avvincolansi
D’aliga il crine,
E tutti i zeffiri
Pel cielo erranti
E tutti i canti
Del pescator.
Dimmi l’oracolo
Di mia fortuna,
Tu della duna
Eco e splendor.
Parla, la vergine
Cupida origlia,
Rosea conchiglia.
profetica)
Parla… e che? Turbinano
Sconvolte l’onde!
Crollan… rigurgitano…
Alte e profonde.
4
Do you not fear
Ariofarne’s cruel spirit?
Do you not know that
rejected love turns to bitter gall?
(sarcastically)
Dove! Do you drive
the greedy hawk from your nest?...
I have claws,
and will fall upon you.
Hero - (serenely)
Do you see that bright flame
dancing on the sea?
It is the star of Venus,
a star of hope.
Its soft light
envelops my heart,
deep, embracing peace
in a serene flash of light.
Ariofarne - (angrily)
Think, think now, the thunderbolt is near!
Think before your fate is sealed.
Hero - (disdainfully)
The grave is less grim than your kiss,
less dark is death than your laughter.
Ariofarne - I am the Archon, mighty and cruel,
and my rage has often proved fatal.
Hero - (makes as if to leave) I fear nothing.
A ray of light protects me
and no mortal power can extinguish it.
Ariofarne - One last moment. Ah! Listen!
Smile upon me, heavenly face!
Would you have revenge or death?
Hero - Revenge!
Ariofarne - (grimly solemn)
Your sad fate is sealed.
Scene IV
Hero alone.
Absorbed in thought she approaches the altar.
8 Is my fate sealed? Sealed
by that cruel man!
I have lost my mind; Man
is not master of his fate. I seek a sign.
(she sees a sacred shell among the offers on the altar, picks it up, looks at it intently,
then puts it to her ear)
9
Pink shell
of my native shore,
little nest
in the wide sea,
cradle and fleet
of Venus,
pink shell.
Thousands of spirals
within you
make even
the silent air sing.
You sing and glow,
chorus among choruses,
now midst the gold
of the sacred altar.
The bees buzz
in the rose-laurels,
and are still heard
in your meanders.
An Aeolian voice
whispers within you,
pink shell.
Within you do
Venus’ nymphs palpitate,
their hair all wrapped
in seaweed,
and all the zephyrs
that wander across the skies
and all
the fisherman’s songs.
Oracle, tell me
what is my fate,
you, echo and splendour
of the dune.
Speak, this anxious maid
awaits your voice,
pink shell.
(she puts the shell to her ear and a look of dread
appears on her face)
Speak… what?
The waves rise up!
They crash… and rise again…
tall and deep.
E sull’equorea
Terribil ira
Piomba la dira
Furia del tuon.
Orror profetico!
Rombo bieco!
Terribil eco!
Ria vision!
Fuggi! Ho una lagrima
Sulle mie ciglia,
Tetra conchiglia.
(getta la conchiglia inorridendo)
Scena V
Ero, Leandro, Ariofarne.
10 Ariofarne - Riconosco i numidici corsieri
Al volo gagliardo, ed al turbante
I siriaci guerrieri,
E riconosco il giovinetto amante
(a Leandro con ironia)
A un segno maliardo
Che il miserello porta nello sguardo.
Leandro - (Perduto io son.)
Ariofarne - Nel varcar queste porte
In ora vietata
Sai che affronti la morte?
Leandro - (fiero)
Il so, né temo.
Ariofarne - Adolescente eroe
Tu meriti il mio perdono, all’adorata
Fanciulla io t’abbandono.
Leandro - (Ahimè! Vacillo.)
Fa cor. Di Dafni e Cloe
Rinnovellisi il caso e quello stesso
Fuoco vorace la vergine accenda
Che in te balena adesso.
(si allontana)
(Soltanto allor vendetta avrò, tremenda.)
(esce)
Scena VI
Ero e Leandro.
11 Leandro - (accostandosi ad Ero)
Ero soave dal volto celeste,
Sulle tue guancie una stilla, perché?
Ero - Leandro pio dalle pupille meste,
Tu perchè vieni amabilmente a me?
Chiesi se m’ami… e mi rispose: no.
Ero - Sugli oracoli incombe altro mister.
Vedi, misteriosa viola
Sott’all’erbe e nell’arnia è ascoso il miel.
Leandro - (con effusione)
Dolce pensiero vuol dolce parola,
Scopri il tuo cor poich’è scoperto è il ciel.
Ben tu sveli la pompa delle chiome
Mostrando i bei biondeggiamenti al sol.
Ero - O come guati… o come parli… o come
Leandro - Per mille aspetti mille volte bella,
Virginalmente candida e fatal.
Ahi!
Flutti disfido l’invido furor.
Nel nostro bacio s’uniran due mondi,
Due mondi s’ameran nel nostro amor.
Ero - Leandro! Splende l’etere
Al par d’un’orifiamma!
5
And on the
raging sea
the dire fury
of your thunder strikes.
Dread prophecy!
Fierce rumbling!
Terrible echo!
Cruel vision!
Flee! A tear stands
in my eye,
sinister shell.
(she throws the shell away in horror)
Scene V
Hero, Leander, and Ariofarne. Leander stealthily enters from the back and looks
intently at Hero. Ariofarne, entering from the opposite side, sees him. The dialogue
between Leander and Ariofarne takes place at the back and is carried out
in a low voice. Hero sits in a corner, absorbed in her thoughts, oblivious of
them.
10 Ariofarne - I recognise the Numidian coursers
by their bold gallop, and the Syriac warriors
by their turbans,
and I recognise the young lover
(to Leander with sarcasm)
by an enchanting sign
that is held in the wretch’s gaze.
Leander - (I am lost.)
Ariofarne - Entering here
at a forbidden hour
you know that you risk your life?
Leander - (proudly)
I know, and have no fear.
Ariofarne - Young hero
you deserve my forgiveness,
I abandon you to the beloved maiden.
Leander - (Alas! I hesitate.)
Ariofarne - So bold before death and so fearful
before love! Take heart. Let the story
of Daphne and Chloe be renewed
and may that same true flame that burns in you
be kindled in the virgin’s heart.
(he moves off)
(Only then will I exact my terrible revenge.)
(exits)
Scene VI
Hero and Leander.
11 Leander - (approaching Hero)
Sweet Hero with heavenly face,
why these tears on your cheeks?
Hero - Kind Leander with sad eyes,
why do you come to me?
Leander - I come to you because I asked a jonquil flower
if you loved me… and it answered: no.
Hero - I wept because a shining shell
told me something that made my heart tremble.
Leander - The shell lied… but not the flower.
Hero - Oracles hold other mysteries.
Leandro - If Love speaks, there are no secrets for the heart.
Hero - If the heart speaks, the mind holds secrets.
You see, the violet lies hidden in the grass
and honey is hidden in the hive.
Leander - (warmly)
Sweet thoughts need sweet words,
open your heart, for the skies are open.
You make a fine show of your splendid hair
with your fair blond tresses in the sun.
Hero - Your gaze… your words… your caresses
are not moved by pity!
Leander - The deer eats the cytisus flower,
the bee flies to the rose and the wave to the shore,
and my face is reflected in yours,
and my hand seeks yours.
Hero - Words flow from your lips
sweeter and more vital than from an amphora.
Leander - In a thousand ways beautiful,
virginally pure and fatal.
Ah! Why was I born on the other shore
in Asia, constantly lashed by the sea!
Hero - I hate the sea that separates Thrace and Abydos.
Ah, cruel sea! Ah, stormy sea!
Leander - And for this hatred I love you and defy
the envious anger of the deep waves.
Two worlds will be linked in our kiss,
two worlds will love through our love.
Hero - Leander! The ether shines
like an oriflamme!
E mi trasporta l’estasi
Nel raggio d’una fiamma.
Spira su me l’ambrosia
Del Nume ed un novel
Vibra sonoro palpito
Nel sol, nel mar, nel ciel.
Leandro - Ero! Il sembiante magico
Figgi alla mia pupilla,
E’ là che la tua immagine
Più vagamente brilla.
Dal tuo bel viso piovemi
Una serena al cor
Soavità di balsami,
Melanconia d’amor.
Tutto s’armasse a separarci, uniti
Ne accoglierebbe il cielo.
(esce)
Scena VII
Ero, Ariodarne.
candelabri e torce. Ariofarne, Ero, Leandro, Coro.
1 Coro - Ave, o stella vagabonda
Dei tramonti e degli albor.
Or sui monti ed or sull’onda
Disfavilla il tuo fulgor.
Il tuo raggio, in cui s’aduna
Ogni gaudio ed ogni duol,
Una lagrima alla luna
E un sorriso aggiunge al sol.
Ave, o Dea! Del nostro sangue
Tu sei balsamo e velen.
Benedetta, o Dea d’amor;
Ave, o Venere omicida!
Lieto è l’uom che per te muor.
2 Ariofarne - (dopo il coro, alzandosi)
O popolo di Venere! Formose
Sacerdotesse, sacerdoti, udite.
Io vi convegno ad un antico rito.
(a Ero che s’accosta)
Ero gentil, t’appressa,
(fra sé)
(Ah, per l’Averno,
Non mi sfuggi!)
(a tutti)
La Dea parlò, l’olimpia
Favella sua si disascose e disse:
“In mezzo al mar siede un’antica torre,
La torre della Vergine chiamata
Negli aurei tempi vergine romita
Sacrificio pudico ai Numi offriva
Delle intatte sue forme.
6
Ecstasy transports me
into the ray of a flame.
Divine ambrosia breathes on me
and a new pulse
beats mightily
in the sun and the sea.
Leander - Hero! Your enchanting face
is set in my eyes,
that is where your image
shines most fair.
Your beautiful face pours
serene balsam
into my heart,
melancholy of love.
(Ariofarne’s fanfare sounds. But Ariofarne will have already entered and hidden
behind the statue of Apollo.)
Hero - The sacred fanfare comes down the hill
and summons the people. Ah, flee, flee…
Ariofante is with them.
Leander - (he picks a flower from a shrub)
One moment longer…
Let this flower that I have picked
remind you of my name and of love.
Hero - (taking the flower)
Leander, listen:
and when shall I see you again?
Leander - When?
Such heavenly strength is there in us
that if the whole world took arms to divide us
we would be united in heaven.
(exits)
Scene VII
Hero, Ariodarne.
12 Hero - Was I dreaming... What was this?
(the fanfare approaches)
Yet I hear the trumpets
coming closer. Flower, on my breast!
(kneeling before the statue of Apollo)
Fateful god… May your words illuminate
my shaken soul, and tell me
what will become of the love that is born in me:
What is your prophecy? Speak.
Ariofarne - (in a cavernous voice, behind the statue, unseen by Hero)
Death.
(Hero flees in horror, Ariofarne follows her with a ferocious gaze. The fanfare
sounds loudly. The curtain falls.)
ACT TWO
THE APHRODISIUM
The part of the temple of Venus consecrated to mysteries, splendidly lit by candelabra
and torches. Ariofarne, Hero, Leander, Chorus.
1 Chorus - I greet you, oh wandering star
of twilight and of dawn.
Now on the mountain top and now on the wave
spread your light.
Your ray, which holds
all joy and all sorrow,
adds a tear for the moon
and a smile for sun.
Farewell, oh goddess! You are
balsam and poison for our blood.
Happy is the man who suffers for you
with your charm in his heart.
Blessed are you in tears and cries
oh Goddess of love;
Hail, oh fatal Venus!
Happy the man who dies for you.
2
Ariofarne - (rising)
Oh people of Venus!
Pious priestess, priests, listen.
I summon you to an ancient rite.
(to Hero, who approaches)
Sweet Hero, approach,
(to himself)
(Ah, by hell,
you will not escape me!)
(to everyone present)
The goddess has spoken, she has uttered
sacred words and said:
“In the middle of the sea stands an ancient tower,
called the Virgin’s tower
In ancient times, a solitary virgin
offered the modest sacrifice
of her intact forms.
(a Ero)
Ero gentil (ti penti), t’avvicina.
(Vedi ove tendo? Hai tempo ancor). Sull’ara
Sali con me. (O in un carcere eterno
O nel talamo mio… scegli, è ancor tempo).
Ero - (a bassa voce ad Ariofarne, tentando svincolarsi)
(Lasciami, infame!)
Ariofarne - (ad alta voce con serenità)
Ardano l’ambre e odori
La rosa di Lièo.
(a bassa voce ad Ero)
(Se fuggir tenti,
Qui ti bacio le labbra).
Ero - (inorridendo)
(Orror! Leandro!)
(Scegli… scegli…)
Ero - (Il carcere).
Ariofarne - (con voce tuonante ad Ero)
Tu la Vergine sei.
Leandro - (si scaglia contro Ariofarne)
Dalle mie braccia
Pria ti difendi!…
Tutti - O sacrilegio!
Ero - (atterrita)
O Numi!
Ariofarne - L’arrestate, guerrieri…
Leandro - Il mondo, il cielo,
Selvaggio arconte, e la tua rabbia io sfido.
Quella vergine io l’amo.
Ariofarne - (ai soldati)
Il suo vigore
Col numero si fiacchi.
(Leandro è atterrato dalle guardie)
Ah! Tu gareggi
Con Ercole alla lotta, eppur sul suolo
Eccoti, o forte.
L’Ellesponto, l’attenda orrenda morte.
Date principio, o sacerdoti, al rito.
(Ero è rimasta sull’altare immobilizzata dal terrore. Ariofarne la orna cogli oggetti
sacri.
4 O sacra vergine,
Le chiome d’oro
Coll’acqua magica
Spargo ed irroro.
Ridi e l’olimpica
Gioia preliba,
All’aureo calice
T’appressa e liba.
Cingi la fulgida
Luna falcata,
E il velo argenteo,
O te beata.
(con accento sinistro)
(Spesso dai culmini
Del tuo manier
Ti desti l’ululo
Dello sparvier),
Ero - (come trasognata)
(Più presso al limpido
Cielo profondo,
Lontan dal torbido
Fragor del mondo,
Vivrò in un mistico
Sogno seren,
Ma, o Dei! Salvatemi
Leandro almen).
Leandro - (Perduta! O lagrime
Sgorgate! O cuore
Ti frangi! Un esule
Son dell’amore.
Già un vasto oceano
Sul mio tesor
Si chiuse e un carcere
Si chiude ancor).
Coro - Beata vittima
Del casto vel,
Per te già spirano
L’aure del ciel.
7
To bring back this age
and the golden universe
of rich harvests, I would have
the virgin’s rite renewed and have the tower
receive its victim.”
Thus she spoke and disappeared.
3 To fulfil the goddess’ promise…
(to Hero)
gentle Hero (repent), approach.
(Do you see what I wish? There is still time).
Come to the altar with me. (Either to an eternal prison
or to my bed… choose, there is still time).
Hero - (aside to Ariofarne, trying to get away from him)
(Leave me, wretch!)
Ariofarne - (in a loud voice, serenely)
Burn the amber
and scented roses of Lian.
(aside to Hero)
(If you try to flee,
I will kiss you).
Hero - (horrified)
(Horror! Leander!)
Ariofarne - And let fair Leander play
a sighing ode on his cithara. (Choose… choose…)
Hero - (Prison!)
Ariofarne - (in a thundering voice, to Hero)
You are the Virgin.
Leander - (hurling himself at Ariofarne)
You must first defend yourself
against me!…
All - Oh sacrilege!
Hero - (in fear)
Oh gods!
Ariofarne - Arrest him, warriors…
Leander - Cruel Archon,
I defy earth, heaven, and your anger.
I love this virgin.
Ariofarne - (to the guards)
Guards
calm his ardour.
(Leander is thrown to the ground)
Ah! You fight
like Hercules, yet now you are down
oh strong man.
(to the guards)
Have him sent straight
to the Asian shore, and if he should cross
the Hellespont again, may he meet a terrible death.
Priests, let the rite begin.
(Hero is on the altar, frozen by terror. Ariofarne adorns her with sacred objects.
Leander is held still by guards)
4 Oh sacred virgin,
upon your golden tresses
I pour
the sacred water
Laugh and savour
the joy of Olympus,
approach the golden chalice
and drink.
Don the shining
crescent moon,
and the silver veil,
oh fortunate maid.
(in a sinister voice)
(Often from the towers
of your castle
have you heard
the hawk screech)
Hero - (as if in a trance)
(Closer to pure
deep heaven,
far from the world’s
madding din,
will I live in a serene,
pious dream,
but, oh gods! Save
Leander at least!)
Leander - (Lost! Oh tears
flow free! For you
oh broken heart,
I am an exile from love.
An ocean separates me
from my love
a prison separates me
from her).
Chorus - Blessed victim
with the chaste veil,
the breeze of heaven
blows for you now.
5 Ariofarne - Ed ora agli anatèmi.
(a Ero)
Giura! Giura!
Giura per l’atre porte
Di Pluto e per la Morte
che resterai celestialmente pura.
Giura.
Ero - (con voce fievole)
Ho giurato.
Dilaniata
Spaventi il ciel sulla spiaggia tetra.
(silenzio d’orrore. Accennando a Leandro, il quale è trascinato dalle
guardie)
S’allontani quell’uom.
Beviam, tutto è cenere, delirio e canzone
Fuggevole e vana.
O Venere!
O Adone!
Peàna! Peàna!
(cala la tela)
ATTO TERZO
LA TORRE DELLA VERGINE.
Interno della torre. Ottagono.
Notte. Un raggio di luna incerto penetra or sì or no
Scena Prima
Ero sola.
6 Coro interno e lontano di Marinai -
La notte diffonde
Gl’incanti sul mar,
Tranquille e profonde
Vaporan le sponde,
La barca è una culla.
O vaga fanciulla,
Andiamo sull’onde,
Andiamo a sognar.
Una voce dal mare - Risplendon di fòsforo
I flutti del Bòsforo.
Marinai - Già palpita e anela
Per estasi il cor;
La luna si vela,
La luna si svela,
Son l’arche veliere
Al vento leggere;
La nave ha la vela
E il cuore ha l’amor.
La voce dal mare - Risplendon di fòsforo
I flutti del Bòsforo.
(tutto rientra nel silenzio)
7 Ero - Ellesponto! Poetica laguna
Per me ti svelse dai rami felici.
Nuove radici or pianta nel mio cuore,
Tenero fiore.
Ero - (meditabonda)
Torna talora a scuotermi un beato
Profumo del passato. Allora penso
8
5 Ariofarne - And now for the anathema.
(to Hero)
Swear! Swear!
Swear by the grim doors
of Pluto and by death
that you will always be pure.
Swear.
Hero - (faintly)
I have sworn.
Ariofarne - And if this fatal oath be broken,
and should a man
come to profane your retreat,
let stones be cast
against your bared breast
until your mangled body
on the dark shore
horrifies heaven.
(A horrified silence falls. Glancing at Leandro, who is dragged away by the
guards)
Take that man away. The moon is rising,
let the chant of the orgies resound!
(the moon rises, its bright rays illuminates the orgy, in shark contrast with the
light of the torch and of the candelabra. Hero, wrapped in a white veil, stands on
the altar, dominating the revelry)
Chorus and dance - Paean! Paean! Let us take the chalice
shaped by Venus’s trembling bosom!
The form moulded by the goddess’ breast
is already full of aromatic wine!
Drink, all is ashes, delirium, vision
fleeting and vain.
Oh Venus!
Oh Adonis!
Paean! Paean!
(the curtain falls)
ACT THREE
THE TOWER OF THE VIRGIN
An octagonal room inside the tower. On the left, a large balcony. Right back, a
staircase that from the floor level leads down, the only visible exit from the tower.
The walls are blackened and bare. In the middle, a pallet covered with a leopard
hide; nearby, a large table with on top a lit candle, an hourglass, and a shell
shaped as a speaking-tube. Near the table, a seat. Hero sits, gazing at the hourglass.
It is night. Once in a while, a moon ray filters through the balcony window.
The wind carries distant voices from out at sea.
First Scene
Hero alone.
6 Distant Chorus of Sailors -
The night spreads
its beauty on the sea.
Calm and deep
the shores fade into the distance.
The boat is a cradle.
Oh fair maiden,
let us set sail,
let us go to dream.
A voice out at sea - The waters of the Bosphorus
glow with their fires.
Sailors - The ecstatic heart
throbs and races;
The moon is covered,
the moon is unveiled.
The sailing boats
glide with the breeze;
the ship has a sail
and the heart has love.
The out at sea - The waters of the Bosphorus
glow with their fires.
(silence falls)
7
Hero - Hellespont! Poetic lagoon
constantly changed by fortune,
may the light of the moon bring you peace
tonight. The dark world is silent.
(she produces a flower from her dress)
And you whom I hide in the sacred folds
of my breast, you that bear the name of Leander,
sweetly perfumed flower, which he chose for me,
and plucked from the happy branches,
now plant new roots in my heart,
tender flower.
A distant voice out at sea - The moon hides,
avoid the shores.
Hero - (absorbed in thought)
A sweet perfume of the past
comes to stir me. Then I think
O notti! O rimembranze!
O sorrisi! O speranze!
Una voce dal mare - (lontanissima e prolungata)
C’è un nuvolo nero
Sull’isola Eubèa.
Altra voce - (meno lontana)
All’erta, nocchiero,
Che vien la marèa.
Una voce dal mare - (lontanissima)
S’intorbida l’Orto,
Tornate nel porto.
8 Ero - Ombra! Notte! Mister!
Splendi, splendi, erma facella,
All’occulto nuotator,
Come faro, come stella,
Sull’Oceano dell’amor.
9 Splendi, splendi! E nelle amare
Spume versi ambrosia il ciel,
E diventi dolce il mare
Dove passa il mio fedel.
Splendi, splendi! O ninfe, o amori,
Ingigliate il suo cammin,
Fate inciampo sol di fiori
A quell’omero divin.
Splendi, splendi! E se ai marinai
Solchi anelo e lasso ei vien,
Bianchi cigni e bei delfini
Reggan l’umido suo sen.
(la luna si scioglie dalle nubi)
10 È desso! È desso! Te beata, o luna,
Perché frangi le nuvole e rischiari
Il vago eroe nell’onde. È desso, è desso!
Studia il passo, mio ben… La luna fugge,
Tenta con cauto piede ogni macigno…
All’edera t’appiglia… ah! non cadere!…
Non cader nell’abisso… un passo ancora…
Mio Leandro! Leandro!
Scena II
Ero e Leandro
Leandro - Ero!
Ero - Leandro!
11 Leandro - Volto soffuso d’estasi,
Faro di mie procelle!
Ho l’alma fra le stelle,
Piango di voluttà.
Sì, dai beati rai
Piango, chè senza lagrime
L’uom non contempla mai
La celestial beltà!
Ero - O deiforme! Olimpico!
Bello siccome un Nume
M’appari e t’arde il lume
Del genio e dell’amor.
Pende la dolce sposa
Di tue parole al balsamo,
E se il tuo labbro posa
Ode il silenzio ancor.
Leandro - M’ami?
Ero - Se t’amo? E tu ? M’ami?
Leandro - T’adoro.
Ah! dolce cosa
Saria la morte…
Leandro - (sorgendo)
Tu morir?… Fuggire,
Fuggir piuttosto. Ascolta, assai fidammo
Nel notturno mister; il tuo periglio,
Sposa, pavento. A più securo porto,
A più serena spiaggia, a più tranquilla
Solitudine andiam. In mar domani
Recherò una barchetta e salperemo
Per l’ignoto orizzonte, innamorati
9
of the first time he appeared to me
and said: Seven stades of high sea
prevent me from kissing your fair face,
but I have decided to cross the waves
if they are propitious and if a light
from the tower guides me.
Oh nights! ! Oh remembrances!
Oh smiles! Oh hopes!
A voice out at sea - (very distant)
There is a dark cloud
over the island of Euboea.
Another voice - (less distant)
Careful now, helmsman,
the tide is rising.
A voice out at sea - (very distant)
The West falls dark,
return to the harbour.
8 Hero - Darkness! Night! Mystery!
A star falls!
It is my Leander, leaping into the sea!
There … I can see him now, with the sharp eye
of my mind… He moves away from the shore.
He strikes out amidst the waves. Oh, that star
foretold the truth.
(she looks at the hourglass, takes a torch and returns to the balcony)
The hour has passed.
Here is the torch, I burn with it.
Shine, shine lone flame,
for the hidden swimmer,
like a beacon, like a star,
on the Ocean of love.
9 Shine, shine! And into the bitter foam
let heaven pour ambrosia,
and the sea be sweet
where my true love passes.
Shine, shine! Oh nymphs, oh loves,
strew his path with flowers,
make a bed of flowers
for his divine members.
Shine, shine and if he falls
weary and breathless in the waves,
let white swans and beautiful dolphins
support his wet body.
(the moon appears from behind the clouds)
10 It is he! It is he! Blessed are you, oh moon,
for you rend the clouds and shed your light
on the fair hero in the waves. It is he! It is he!
Take care, my love, the moon flees,
test each stone with a careful foot…
Cling fast to the ivy… Ah! Do not fall!…
Do not fall into the abyss… one more step…
My Leander! Leander!
Scene II
Hero and Leander
Leander - Hero!
Hero - Leander!
11 Leander - Face bathed in ecstasy,
torch of my toils!
My heart is among the stars,
I weep with happiness.
Yes, I shed tears of joy
for without tears
man can never admire
heavenly beauty!
Hero - Oh divine! Olympian!
As beautiful as a god
you appear before me
spirit and love glow in you.
Your beloved bride hangs
on your sweet words,
and if your lips stop
she hears the silence still.
Leander - Do you love me?
Hero - Do I love you? And you?
Leander - I adore you.
Hero - I could die in your arms…
like the sound of a harp. Ah! Death
would be a sweet thing…
Leander - (rising)
You would die?… I would sooner flee,
Listen, we have trusted enough
the mystery of darkness,
I fear for you, my love. We shall leave
for a safer harbour, for a calmer strand,
for more peaceful solitude. Tomorrow I shall bring
a boat on the sea and we will set off
for an unknown place, loving sailors
Navigatori colle vele al vento.
12 A due - Andrem sovra ai flutti profondi,
In traccia del ceruli mondi
Sognati dal nostro pensier,
In traccia d’un rorido nido,
In traccia d’un florido lido
Ignoto a mortale nocchier.
Andrem dove nasce l’aurora,
violento)
Leandro - Un uragano!
Ero - Precipizio! Morte!
Dar lo squillo io dovrei delle tempeste
Con quella tuba al mar... per evocare
I sacerdoti… ed Ariofarne… al rito
Della scongiura…qui… dove noi siamo…
Né salvezza oramai, né nascondiglio
Havvi per te…
Leandro - (risoluto) Tu dà fiato alla tromba,
Io mi getto nel mar.
Ero - Ah! Folle! guata!
Spavento! Turbinano
Sconvolte l’onde!
Crollan, rigurgitano
Alte e profonde,
Sull’equorea
Terribil ira
Piomba la dira
Furia del tuon!
Leandro - Vieni e in mezzo alla ruina
Fortunal che ha il mar travolto,
Beami ancora, Ero divina,
Con fulgor del tuo bel volto.
Mentre il tuon ripete al tuono
Il titanico richiamo,
Sul tuo cuore io m’abbandono
E ripeto: Io t’amo!
Ero - Io t’amo!
Ero - Ah!
Leandro - Sposa mia! Tu tremi!
Ero - (origliando) Taci… taci…
Leandro - Che origli tu?
Ero - (con un grido di disperato spavento)
Le trombe di Ariofarne!
S’otturano… le fauci… ascende… ascende…
Sempre più… verso noi… è maledetto
Chi un giuro infrange… O mio Leandro… fuggi…
No… non fuggir…
Leandro - (tenta svincolarsi)
Mi lascia.
Ero - Ha l’uragano
Sete di sangue! Resta.
Leandro - Io vo’ salvarti.
(la fanfara sempre più vicina)
Già s’avvicinan le tartaree trombe.
Ero - Pietà! Pietà! Pietà!
Leandro - (con affettuosa violenza si scioglie)
Forse domani
Fuggiremo al seren. Addio.
Ero - Ti salva!
Leandro - L’amore è forte
Più della morte!
(spicca il salto. Scoppia un fulmine)
SCENA ULTIMA
Ero, Ariofarne, Cori.
14 Coro e Ariofarne -
Cospargiamo di magico farro
L’onda irata del turgido mar,
E sia freno, sia diga, sia sbarro
10
with wind in our sails.
12 A due - We will glide over the deep waves,
seeking the blue worlds
that we have dreamt of,
in search of a dewy nest,
in search of a blossoming shore
unknown to mortal helmsman.
We will go to where the dawn arises,
we will go where the sea is perfumed
with the sweet reflection of the sun,
with kisses on our lips
with laughter in our hearts, and ecstasy on our faces,
enveloped in a calm flight.
(clap of lightning and thunder. For a moment Hero and Leander, shaken out of
their daydreaming, freeze, struck by horror. The storm grows
in violence)
Leander - A hurricane!
Hero - Downfall! Death!
I should signal the storms
with this foghorn... to call
the priests… and Ariofarne… to the rite
of the oath… here… where we are…
there is no safety, or hiding place
for you…
Leander - (resolutely) Sound the horn,
I shall leap into the sea.
Hero - Folly! Look!
(she leads him onto the balcony)
Mighty waves beat against the tower!
(the storm grows even more violent, with relentless claps of lightning that flash
across the sky in front of the balcony, continuously
illuminating the two lovers)
Horror!
The furious waves boil!
They crash down
and rise high and deep,
and on the raging sea
the dire anger
of thunder
beats down!
Leander - Come and in the midst
of the wreckage of this sea storm,
delight me again, divine Hero,
with the splendour of your face.
As thunderbolts repeat
their titanic call,
I will abandon myself on your heart
and repeat: I love you!
Hero - I love you!
(Ariofarne’s sacred fanfare sounds at the foot of the tower)
13 Offstage Chorus - Let us scatter sacred wheat
over the angry waves,
that it may hold, dam, restrain
that it may placate you, oh Neptune.
Hero - Ah!
Leander - My bride! You tremble!
Hero - (listening) Quiet… quiet...
Leander - What do you hear?
Hero - (crying out in fear and despair)
Ariofarne’s trumpets!
My throat is choked… it is rising, rising again…
coming closer to us… Cursed
all who break a vow… Oh my Leander… flee…
No, do not flee…
Leander - (trying to break free)
Let me go.
Hero - The hurricane
thirsts for blood! Stay.
Leander - I will save you.
(the fanfare sounds closer and closer)
The Tartarean trumpets approach.
Hero - Mercy! Mercy! Mercy!
Leander - (with gentle determination)
Tomorrow perhaps
we will flee. Farewell.
Hero - Save your life!
Leander - Love is stronger
than death!
(He leaps. Loud thunder.)
LAST SCENE
Hero, Ariofarne, Chorus. Hero jumps to her feet and rushes to the torch, with the
intention of carrying it to the balcony, but Ariofarne appears on the stairs. The fanfare
is behind him. Hero drops the torch, which remains of the ground, smoking.
14
Chorus and Ariofarne -
Let us scatter sacred wheat
over the angry waves,
that it may hold, dam, restrain
Ero immobile)
Ero - (con uno slancio interno dell’anima)
(Ah! Forse è un immortale!)
Ariofarne - (fissandola tenacemente)
Ero. La tromba non udii risonar delle tempeste;
E perché non l’udii? Sai che fatale
Tal colpa esser potrebbe? O giovanetta
(ironico) Esploratrice nei sogni smarrita.
Nulla rispondi? Quella face a terra
Perché? Perché trepida tanto? Forse
Che paventi del tuon? Perché al verone
Guizza il tuo sguardo? E questo fiore al suolo
Qual tortore ti ha portato
Su questa rocca, ove i Leandri indarno
Vorrebbero allignar? Rispondi!
Perché tremi in mia man? Vergine?
Ero - (fra sé) (Un lampo!!)
(brillano parecchi lampi uno dopo l’altro e illuminano tutto il mare)
Ariofarne - (con immensa e feroce gioia accennando qualcosa in mare)
Eccolo!
Ero - Ah!
(cade)
Ariofarne - Morto! Sovra il duro scoglio
Il cadavere percosso e sanguinante.
(guarda Ero distesa sul suolo)
Ella è svenuta. All’alba, o sacerdoti,
Adunerete i cumuli. Costei
Il suo giuro tradiva. V’apprestate
A seppellir sott’i macigni e i sassi
Il vivo corpo e il sacrilegio d’Ero.
Ell’è svenuta.
(s’avvicina ad Ero, la tocca)
Ah!
11
that it may placate you, oh Neptune.
(the chorus sing prostrated towards the sea, while Ariofarne scatters the wheat
on the waves. The storm is still raging, but the lightning has stopped. Hero is immobile)
Hero - (with a sudden inspiration)
(Ah! Perhaps he is immortal!)
Ariofarne - (staring at her furiously)
Hero. I did not hear the trumpet signal sound;
why did I not hear it? Don’t you know that
this mistake could be fatal? Oh intrepid maiden
(ironically) lost in dreams.
Have you no answer? Why does that torch
lie on the ground? Why do you tremble so?
Do you fear the thunder? Why does your gaze
turn to the balcony? And what faithful dove
brought this flower
that lies on this rock, where Leanders in vain
seek to take root? Reply!
Hero - (to herself, looking at the spot from which Leander has leapt)
(Jupiter, send me a sign and assure me
that he is safe.)
Ariofarne - (dragging her to the balcony)
You look out into the darkness?
Very well, young maid, we shall explore it together.
Why does your hand tremble in mine? Virgin?
Hero - (to herself) (Lightning!)
(a series of flashes illuminate the sea)
Ariofarne - (with cruel joy, indicating something at sea)
There he is!
Hero - Ah!
(she falls to the ground)
Ariofarne - Dead! On the hard rocks
his beaten, bloody body lies.
(he glances at Hero, unconscious on the ground)
She has fainted. At dawn, oh priests,
you will gather his remains.
She has betrayed her vow. Prepare to bury
under rocks and stones
Hero’s living, sacrilegious body.
She has fainted.
(he crouches near Hero and touches her)
Ah! Would that a thunderbolt struck me!
I am not avenged!… She is safe!.. She is dead!…
(Clap of lightning; the wall in the back crumbles and through the gap the sea can
be seen, suddenly calm; under the moonlight, on an iridescent cloud Hero and
Leander appear as immortals, surrounded by nereids, uranias and cupids. The
chorus prostrate themselves; Ariofarne, who is still kneeling by Hero’s body, sees
the glorification of the two lovers and hides his face in his hands.)
