calendar was developed has aimed to optimizing and promoting
the cultural value already present in Carrara and, simultaneously,
to engage international artists and art critics who have come to
know the city.
This strategy has enabled us to both lead citizens to rediscover
local ‘hidden gems’ through their direct involvement and
participation, and also to invite artists and critics, who have acted
as a multiplier, publicizing Carrara as a centre of cultural output.
Those who have spent time at the Marble Museum have been
met with performances, shows, workshops, samplings of local
wine and food products: activities which enliven the Museum as a
vessel, and which have been designed in a dialogue between the
internal wealth of the museum and outside contributions. Even
the temporary exhibitions, located both within the permanent
collections and in the beautiful outdoor gardens, are in fact deeply
connected to Carrara, the city which inspired them and for which
they are specifically designed.
Yuri Ancarani, Stefano Canto, Massimo Cittadini, Aron Demetz,
Graham Hudson, Robert Pettena, Andrew Rutt, Avelino Sala,
Giacomo Verde are the artists who have taken part in this program.
Some had previously worked in Carrara, others are educators
at the Fine Arts Academy, with which a collaboration between
the students and the Museum has been developed (assigning
course credits to participants), others still were invited to become
acquainted with this treasure of the Apuan Alps. Finally, the
calendar of workshops and residencies also aligns itself at the
cusp of the latest International developments in artistic production.
The artist residencies include a non-hierarchical workshop held by
the artist with a chosen bracket of the population: this interaction
provides the starting point of the artists’ research, which is then
displayed in a final exhibition. Some of the works on display within
exhibitions we have curated have also been donated t the Marble
Museum, further enriching its collection.

2. The term ecomuseum was coined by Hugues de Varine during a meeting with
Georges Henri Rivière, at the time in which, respectively, they held the seats of
director, and former director and permanent counsellor of ICOM (The International
Council of Museums), and with Serge Antoine, counsellor of the Ministry of
Environment. Ecomuseums were conceived as an instrument to protect the traces
of rural society in an age in which urbanization, technological advancements and
the social changes which followed threatened to cast a thousand-year-old cultural
heritage into oblivion.
