a painter of stories, utopias, the joy of living. In his work he condenses, through
his material technique, the time-space correlation peculiar to history.
Matteo Boato is a painter by passion; he sees the world with the eyes of a painter.
In this day and age of concept art, installations and video art, Boato distances
himself from these trends in order to paint, tout court. His painting originates
from his perception of reality, expressed in an exquisitely intellectual way:
subjects, style, formal questions, spatial exploration. The artistic result lies in
the metamorphosis brought about as he comes to grips with these instrumental
aspects. The demarcation line between the categories of form and colour is
obliterated in his images. Colour, transformed into form, determines the material
quality, its substance. In Matteo Boato’s paintings, colour is substance which
creates light. It is pure colour, applied in a compact mass, which gives rise to a
sensation perceived as spatiality. Boato’s world of images is not merely a fictitious
invention, it is more an experience of reality. The subjects of his paintings have
been inspired by the distant awareness of his land.
It is the creative moment in which pictorial expression translates the figurative
aspect into a desire for immediacy and quality of art.
