14 Pittura del seicento 17th-century Painting Una nuova identità per il pittore genovese Gio Raffaele Badaracco (1645-1717) Due quadri genovesi di figura, a grandezza naturale, en pendant, sono stati ritrovati in eccellente stato di conservazione in una collezione aristocratica del Ponente ligure. Databili alla metà del nono decennio del Seicento (1685 circa), di altissima qualità, rappresentano gli episodi veterotestamentari con La veste di Giuseppe mostrata a Giacobbe e Giuseppe che spiega i sogni (olio su tela, 165 x 120 cm). Sono per ispirazione, ductus, finitezza e complessità dei riferimenti linguistici il capolavoro del pittore Gio Raffaele Badaracco (Genova, 1645 - ivi, 1717), del quale grazie anche alla scoperta di un’altra tela inedita con San Giuseppe che culla il Bambino – sempre dal Ponente ligure – si può mettere a fuoco la vera identità e riscrivere la parabola biografica e artistica con l’aiuto anche di nuovi documenti storici 1 . Un viaggio al termine del quale ritroviamo un artista che si distanzia con evidenza dalla sua fama di “minore” e che si distingue al contrario per una eccellente qualità artistica fondata su una serie virtuosa di esperienze formative finora poco note; un pittore la cui fama venne offuscata già in vita dall’ostilità di Domenico Piola che gli precluse possibilità di lavoro a Genova, relegandolo verso il Ponente ligure. Le tele inedite raffigurano due momenti cruciali della storia biblica di Giuseppe, figlio di Giacobbe. La prima (Genesi 37) quando i suoi fratelli malvagi, dopo averlo gettato in un pozzo e venduto come schiavo, si recano dal padre Giacobbe presentandogli la veste sporcata del sangue di un capretto per provarne la morte. La seconda (Genesi 40) quando Giuseppe, rinchiuso nelle carceri del faraone, interpreta i sogni dei compagni di cella: il panettiere e il coppiere del re d’Egitto, imprigionati per aver offeso il sovrano. Il coppiere viene poi liberato e restituito alla sua posizione di corte, il panettiere viene condannato e impiccato. In virtù della loro particolare qualità i dipinti hanno offerto l’occasione per una revisione dell’opera dell’artista, fatto reso ulteriormente possibile dalla recente scoperta di nuovi documenti che chiariscono la cronologia e il significato delle occasioni di istruzione del Badaracco, particolarmente in ambito romano 2 . A new look At the Genoese Artist Gio rAffAele BAdArAcco (1645–1717) Marco Franzone Two life-size Genoese figure paintings en pendant have been discovered in excellent condition in an aristocratic collection in west Liguria. Dating back to the mid-1680s (circa 1685), the beautiful paintings depict two scenes from the Old Testament, The garment of Joseph shown to Jacob and Joseph explains the dreams (oil on canvas, 165 x 120 cm). A study of their subject matter, ductus, finish and the complexities of their linguistic references identifies them as the masterpieces of the painter Gio Raffaele Badaracco (Genoa, 1645–1717). Thanks to the discovery, again in west Liguria, of another previously unknown canvas by the same artist, St Joseph cradling the Child, and input from new historical documents, Badaracco’s life and works have recently been re-evaluated 1 . In the light of the new information Badaracco sloughs his previous label as a “minor” painter. On the contrary he emerges as an artist of outstanding quality, whose excellent work was solidly founded on the basis of a series of previously little-known formative experiences; a painter whose fame was clouded during his lifetime by the hostility of fellow artist Domenico Piola, who prevented him from working in Genoa and relegated him to painting commissions in the western part of the region. The two newly-discovered paintings show two key moments from the Bible story of Joseph, son of Jacob. The first (Genesis 37) depicts the scene where Joseph’s wicked brothers display his coat soaked in goat’s blood to their father Jacob as proof of Joseph’s death after they had in fact thrown him into a well and sold him as a slave. The second (Genesis 40) illustrates the episode where Joseph has been imprisoned by Pharaoh and interprets the dreams of the king of Egypt’s cupbearer and baker, imprisoned with him for offending their lord. He correctly foresees that the cupbearer will be freed and restored to his former dignities, while the baker will be condemned and hung. The quality of the rediscovered paintings has stimulated a new look at all his works, an exercise rendered even more fascinating thanks to some recently discovered papers that throw further light on Badaracco’s artistic growth and the dates involved, particularly with regards to his experiences in Rome 2 .
