The growth of packaging
it must be “ecocompatible”
Editorial
In the leading article published on page 5 of F&C Magazine, we claimed: “During Drupa 2012, it was the printing of packaging
which took centre stage. Our industry is linked to consumer goods, in which packaging is increasingly used, for its
growing adoption within the food industry. Packaging contributes to the preservation of products, whilst, at the same time,
helping to commercialise food, thanks to the engaging marketing that it is able to provide”. In order to delve further into
this summary, our thoughts turn to the recent progress made in the “industry”, in terms of printing, thanks to water-based
inks that do not release solvents into the atmosphere. We are also drawing attention to the production of corrugated card,
which, thanks to its properties, helps to keep food fresh, even in the absence of a refrigerator. This “magic” is made possible thanks
to a substance which is used in the production of the corrugated card and which extends its function, contributing to the prolonged
preservation of vegetables and, more generally, food products.
Continuing with the theme of progress and respect for the environment, the news regarding the production of bottles for mineral
water is of great significance. They are manufactured using “sugar” as a base raw material. The advantage boasted by this kind
of bottle is demonstrated in the way in which it decomposes in a very short period of time, without damaging the environment.
Since 1987, the year in which our magazine was born, we have always covered the topic of ecocompatibility. Similarly, we have
rejoiced in the large and continuous development of our industry. However, the abnormal increase in the volume of rubbish, as a
direct result of packaging, must encourage all industry workers to seek recyclable packaging or, alternatively, that which is environmentally
friendly, like the bottles made from sugar.
La crescita dell’imballaggio
deve essere “ecocompatibile”
C
Some 1,400 exhibitors from the packaging,
technology, processing and
logistics segments are expected at
FachPack 2012 from
25–27 September in the Exhibition Centre
Nuremberg. They come mainly from Germany,
the Netherlands, Switzerland, the Czech
RepubLIC, Austria, Italy, France, Belgium,
Poland and Great Britain. The good 35,000
trade visitors expected from all over Europe
confirm FachPack’s outstanding reputation
as a compact Euroregional gathering of
competent decision-makers from the packaging
sector.
The German economy is looking to the
future with cautious optimism despite the
euro and debt crisis. After last year’s good
3 % growth, most of the economists expect
growth in 2012, although at a modest level.
In the surveys conducted by the ifo Institut
für Wirtschaftsforschung (Institute for Economic
Research) at the beginning of the year,
the small and medium enterprises, which
include most of the German companies in
the packaging industry, were confident and
the German export motor is running at top
speed. Energy efficiency is the dominating
issue everywhere in the packaging supplies
industry due to rising energy and raw material
prices and the growing pressure of
competition. Social trends also have a great
impact on developments and innovations
in the packaging industry: Enjoyment and
quality are so important for consumers that
they are happy to spend more money on this
added value. The package is a major sales
argument in saturated markets. Consumers
also increasingly look for an environmental
label like FSC certification of paper and
cardboard or the CO2 footprint.
Paper, cardboard and paperboard:
high production level – smart ideas
The German paper industry largely maintained
the high level of the previous year
in 2011, but the dynamic upward trend of
2010 did not continue. Sales of paper, paperboard
and cardboard dropped slightly by
1.9 % to 22.6 million t. Production declined
by 1.6 % compared with the same period
Germany
of the previous year. However, as reported
by the Verband Deutscher Papierfabriken
(VDP – Paper Manufacturers Association),
sales rose by 7 % to 15.3 billion euros. The
high costs of raw materials and energy continue
to be a burden on results. Despite
macro-economic risks, the paper industry is
cautiously optimistic about the current year.
The demand for efficient, economical and
environment-compatible transport packaging
of corrugated cardboard is steady,
reports the Verband der Wellpappen-Industrie
(VDW – Corrugated Cardboard Industry
Association). The quantity sold in 2011 is
slightly above the previous year. The association
estimates that the level reached
will be maintained or slightly increased in
2012. Sales have risen appreciably, but accompanied
by higher costs for energy and
raw materials. The corrugated cardboard
industry has proved to be robust in the ups
and downs of the market, and the demand
for its products can also be expected to
grow in future. The member companies sold
25–27 September in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg
a total of more than 7.1 billion m² of corrugated
cardboard in 2011, which is just under
90 million m² more (1.3 %) than in 2010.
Turnover of corrugated cardboard grew by
12.8 % last year, but with rising costs. The
raw material costs account for 54 % of the
total costs. The increasing use of vegetable
raw materials for obtaining energy pushes
up the price of starch products, for example,
which are used for making glue for sticking
the rolls of corrugated base paper. The biggest
cost block remains the raw material
paper.
More and more users are turning to multi-coloured
printed corrugated cardboard
products and so cleverly using this versatile
material as a marketing instrument. How
innovatively the corrugated cardboard itself
can be improved is shown, for example, by a
functional fruit and vegetable punnet, which
won the German Packaging Award in the
“Prototypes” category in 2011. A specially
made corrugated cardboard absorbs the
ethylene gas produced in the ripening pro-
cess and so keeps the fruit or vegetables
fresh for longer. The folding box is also gaining
appreciably – in its promotional impact
and in terms of logistic, protective and use
functions. Packages with matt-gloss effects
are guaranteed to catch the eye at the POS.
Partial embossing, e.g. of lettering, and finishing
with UV coatings skilfully highlight
packages in the cosmetics or confectionery
segments.
Plastics – easy on resources and sustainable
The raw material prices for plastic packaging
rose by almost a third in the first quarter
of 2012 – and an end to these rising prices
is not foreseeable, reports the Industrievereinigung
Kunststoffverpackungen (IK –
German Association for Plastic Packaging
and Films). Despite this, the economic trend
for 2012 shows more positive expectations
than at the end of 2011. Around 30 % of
the companies expect higher sales, and
more than half of them assume that the
situation will at least remain constant. The
export trend is also rated positively. The
top priorities are the resource-saving use of
raw materials and cutting CO2 emissions.
For example, changing to PET recyclates
for bottles for household chemicals saves
valuable resources and improves the CO2
footprint. PET is used for manufacturing
articles like drink bottles, films and textile fibres.
As a recyclate, the material has already
completed at least one life cycle and after
recycling is available again to start a second
life cycle from manufacture through to disposal.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Material
Flow and Logistics also confirms the positive
footprint of the cleaning agent bottles made
from recyclates. The scientists proved that
one fifth less carbon dioxide is produced
when the bottle is manufactured from 100 %
recycled PET.
Glass: high quality and decorative
In the past years, the manufacturers of glass
packaging have focused on the growing
target group of environment- and healthconscious
consumers who also attach great
importance to lifestyle. The container glass
industry is satisfied with the annual result
for 2011. Sales in terms of tonnage were
up 5.1 % over the previous year, according
to the Bundesverband Glasindustrie
(Federal Glass Industry Association). The
demand situation improved distinctly in
2011, especially for the segments of water,
lemonades (an enormous 31.1 %) and beer
(10.1 %). The demand also grew for bottles
for sparkling wine (8.2 %), spirits (7.6 %) and
wine (3 %). Sales of bottles for juice (1.2 %)
and milk (3.6 %) dropped slightly. Sales of
food packaging in 2011 grew by a total of
0.4 % over the previous year, with sausages,
meat and fish increasing their sales growth
by 11 % to become the year’s winners in
food packaging, followed by sweet spreads
(7.7 %) and canned fruit and vegetables
(3.4 %). Sales of packaging glass for pharmaceuticals
(2.1 %) and cosmetics (1.3 %)
were more restrained.
The container glass industry rates the increasing
sales of glass packaging in the
shrinking drinks market as a positive signal.
Glass is popular among consumers, it meets
the safety and sustainability requirements,
has a high-quality appeal and is available in
new decorative forms. Technical innovations
also favour container glass. For example, a
curved glass container for coffee granules
won the German Packaging Award in the
“Sales Packages” category last autumn. The
decisive factor was not only the good shape
for holding, but especially the functional advantages:
A new patented membrane seals
the glass and its large tab makes it easy to
open the first time. This container is the first
industrial appLICation of induction-sealed
peel membranes on glass without the use
of other substances such as glue.
Metal: more growth – premium wine in cans
Some 1.7 million t of aluminium and steel
were processed into packages in 2010, a
production increase of 6.8 % over the previous
year.
This equates to a sales value of some
5.6 billion euros, a rise of 6 %. Whereas
packages of aluminium achieved appreciable
growth, a look at steel packages shows
a different picture: Growth for larger containers
of heavy tinplate with a minimum
thickness of 0.5 mm, but stagnation for the
smaller tinplate containers, i.e. packages
with a volume of up to about 40 l and a plate
thickness of maximum 0.49 mm.
Drink cans and party kegs make up one
of the biggest market segments. Besides
new products like wine and sparkling wine
in cans, especially the functionality of party
kegs for beer is being constantly improved.
Built-in taps together with an integrated
CO2 pressure system offer a 30-day freshness
guarantee after opening the first time. If
the tap is mounted on top of the lid, the beer
can even be drawn from the top of the keg
F&C
for extra convenience. The market for wine
in cans offers great potential through new
trends in consumer behaviour. Small cans
of 200 to 250 ml are particularly attractive
for consumers who only want to enjoy wine
occasionally or in small amounts. The metal
package reaches consumers who are not
traditional wine drinkers, but like to try a premium
wine in an innovative package. Wine in
cans is also interesting for market segments
in which easy transport, weight, storage and
safety are important. Constant quality, stability
and long life are assured by the patented
Vinsafe technology, which includes defined
parameters for the wine, specifications for
the cans and exact standards for filling.
aziende tedesche dell’imballaggio, risulta
fiducioso dai sondaggi condotti all’inizio
E i consumatori fanno
sempre più attenzione alle etichette sull’ambiente,
come la certificazione FSC di carta e
cartoncino, o all’impronta di CO2.
Carta, cartone, cartoncino: produzione
l’anno precedente. La tendenza dinamica al
rialzo registrata nel 2010 non è però continuata.
La vendita di carta, cartoncino e
cartone è scesa lievemente dell’1,9 % a
22,6 milioni di tonnellate. La produzione è
diminuita dell’1,6 % rispetto all’anno precedente.
Come comunica il Verband Deutscher
Papierfabriken (Associazione Cartiere Tedesche,
VDP) il fatturato è cresciuto però del
7 % a 15,3 miliardi di euro. I prezzi elevati
delle materie prime e dell’energia continuano
a incidere sui risultati. Nonostante i rischi
derivanti dalla situazione economica globale
l’industria della carta guarda all’anno in corso
con prudente ottimismo.
La domanda di imballaggi da trasporto di
cartone ondulato efficienti, convenienti e

Wellpappen-Industrie (Associazione dell’industria del cartone
leggermente superiore a quella dell’anno precedente.
I fatturati
marketing.
ondulato realizzato appositamente a tale scopo assorbe
Materiali sintetici: risparmiano risorse
2011. L’aumento delle vendite riferito alla
capienza è stato del 5,1 % rispetto all’anno
precedente, riferisce il Bundesverband Glasindustrie
(Associazione federale industria
del vetro). La situazione della domanda è
nettamente migliorata nel 2011, in particolare
per i segmenti acqua, gassose (con un
enorme 31,1 %) e birra (10,1 %). Ma registrano
aumenti anche le bottiglie per spumanti
(8,2 %), alcoLICi (7,6 %) e vino (3 %).
Leggermente in flessione è invece la vendita
di bottiglie per succhi (1,2 %) e latte (3,6 %).
Gli imballaggi alimentari chiudono il 2011
con un aumento complessivo delle vendite
dello 0,4 % rispetto all’anno precedente.
positivo. I consumatori apprezzano il vetro
perché risponde alle esigenze di sicurezza e
di sostenibilità, è espressione di alta qualità
12
F&C
Magazine
e si presenta in forme nuove
e decorative. Ma vanno
a vantaggio del vetro per
contenitori anche delle innovazioni
tecniche. Citiamo
ad esempio un contenitore
in vetro per caffè istantaneo
dalla forma più sottile in vita
che l’autunno scorso ha
vinto il Deutscher Verpackungspreis (Premio
tedesco dell’imballaggio) nella categoria
“Imballaggi di vendita”. L’aspetto decisivo
rende superflui additivi come p. es. collanti.
Metallo: di nuovo crescite – Vini di alto livello
in lattine
Con un aumento della produzione del 6,8 %
rispetto all’anno precedente, nel 2010 sono
stati trasformati in confezioni circa 1,7 milioni
di tonnellate di alluminio e acciaio. Tradotto
Germany
in piccole quantità.
presenta a Norimberga nuove realizzazioni e
consiste in materiali, strumenti e prodotti
ausiliari per l’imballaggio), tecnica (un
altro terzo dell’offerta è rappresentato da
confezionatrici, tecniche di etichettatura e
marcatura, riciclaggio di imballaggi, controllo
di imballaggi), finitura (stampa su imballaggi
ed etichette, design, produzione di materiali
per il packaging), logistica (sistemi di convogliamento,
carico, immagazzinamento,
composizione ordini, compresi i rispettivi
software e la logistica dei trasporti). I visitatori
professionali provengono soprattutto
dai comparti alimentazione/generi voluttuari,
farmacia/cosmesi, chimica, stampa/carta/
cartone, servizi inerenti a imballaggio e logistica,
materiali sintetici, produttori di automobili
e relativo indotto oltre che apparecchi/componenti
elettrici.
Drupa 2012 proves
resounding success
for Xeikon
Customers and innovation
take central stage on Xeikon
booth
Xeikon announces record sales
and lead generation in all three of
its business areas – Xeikon digital
presses, ThermoFlexX and basysPrint – at
Drupa 2012, which was held last month.
These excellent results have more than
compensated for the slower start to the year
due to the so-called “Drupa effect”: a decline
in sales orders that typically precedes the
quadrennial tradeshow for almost all capital
equipment suppliers.
Over the fourteen days of the show, visitors
to the Xeikon booth were treated to a world
of customer-driven innovation. Alongside
demonstrations of the company’s latest
product releases, visitors were taken on a
journey of innovation covering all the technological
advancements Xeikon has brought
to the market over the last 20 years. After
crossing a bridge to the future, visitors had
the opportunity to experience Trillium, Xeikon’s
latest achievement that the company
believes is the future of printing. Overall sales
numbers for Xeikon at the show were almost
250% higher than the target that the company
had initially set for Drupa.
Trillium – a real game changer
Xeikon promised visitors a journey of innovation
at Drupa 2012 and that is exactly
what they got. Xeikon Trillium technology
was predicted to be a game changer and
the visitors to the booth – from all market
places – agreed. The first implementation of
Xeikon’s High Viscosity Toner (HVT) technology
will enable printing at high speeds and
lower costs, while maintaining the highest
level of image quality and eco-sustainability.
“Trillium was a real draw card,” says Wim
Maes, CEO at Xeikon. “But while visitors
were keen to get a glimpse of the future,
they also showed high levels of interest in
all our new product announcements – from
the new 8000 Series, 3030Plus, Label AppLICation
Suites and Xeikon Color Control
– to the new range of ThermoFlexX imagers
and basysPrint UV platesetters.
There was just no respite for the sales team
over the whole fourteen days as they were
busy answering questions from visitors, and
in many cases this interest turned into immediate
sales. Drupa is truly an international
show drawing visitors from Asia to Africa,
Chile to China and Dubai to Düsseldorf. And
we have literally taken orders from everywhere.”
Letting customers do the talking
Xeikon also gave its existing customers a
very important place in its Drupa plans, with
the daily “Walk of Fame Star” ceremonies.
These ceremonies recognized the valuable
role customers play in the innovation process
at Xeikon.
Each “Star” customer stayed on the booth
for two days discussing their Xeikon experience
with other customers and potential
prospects.
“Xeikon’s innovation is very much due to
our customers – and we have seen plenty
of them here!” says Michael V. Ring, VP of
World Wide Marketing. “Being close to our
customers, day in, day out, enables us to
get the input we need to develop future
products. It was just great to have the opportunity
to recognize their input – and for
them to join us on the stand so visitors could
openly talk with them about what it’s like to
partner with Xeikon.”
Customers on the “Walk of Fame” came
from across Europe and included First Data
(Greece), Ypsilon (Belgium), Data One
(France), Howard Hunt (UK), VSP (Germany),
W&R (Netherlands), CS Label (UK), Etichete
Flexo (Romania), Color Gruppe (Germany)
and TagG Informatique (France).
Trillium - una vera e propria svolta
La tecnologia Trillium era stata descritta come
una rivoluzione e i visitatori dello stand
concordano.
Domino Printing Sciences expanding
its L-Series range of thermal
ink jet (TIJ) printers with the launch
of the L100i. Packaged with a host of new
i-Tech intelligent Technology smart features
to maximise productivity, and with the added
flexibility of its single print head design,
the new L100i integrates easily into web
presses, mail bases, envelope inserters and
folders for simple variable data print applications
where high quality print is required.
These range from simple back numbering
of pharmaceutical labels, catalogues and
magazine addressing, 2D code and barcode
printing for traceability to applications requiring
graphics and targeted personalisation.
The single print head modular design of the
L100i offers total flexibility for the user, and
is fully scalable to enable further print heads
to be added to accommodate a host of print
positions and applications. The new L100i
complements the existing wider print format
L400i offering, and also includes a range of
new enhancements designed to improve
operational efficiency and enable the use of
faster drying inks.
Each individual print head
provides a print swathe
of 12.5mm (0.5”), which
can be expanded by adding
or stitching up to eight
separately controlled print
heads. If further width is
required, up to 32 print
heads can be daisychained
together.
Flexibility of the L100i is
further enhanced by the
orientation of the individual
print heads which
can be configured at 90º
allowing for different web
output directions for more
demanding print.
The L100i utilises the latest
thermal ink jet print
head technology, generating
smaller 24pl. size
droplets that result in less
obvious ink bleed, therefore
producing a sharper,
more refined print image.
The typically 20% smaller droplet size combined
with the reliable bulk ink supply option
also significantly reduces consumable
costs compared to most other thermal ink
jet printer offerings. Furthermore, its i-Tech
twin print nozzle DuoJet technology maintains
optimum print quality and eliminates
downtime.
Should a print nozzle become blocked, the
unique overlapping of the two nozzles on
the DuoJet print head ensures that there is
no ‘white line’ and the quality of the printed
output remains intact and readable.
The L100i benefits from a range of aqueous
inks designed specifically for different
applications.
These inks, which require no special handling,
come in easy recyclable ‘no-touch’ ink
cartridges that are quickly interchangeable
or supplied from a 400ml bulk ink tank allowing
for up to 400 uninterrupted hours of
operation for higher volume printing.
Where customers require high volumes of
general purpose black ink complemented by
specialised inks and spot colours, the L100i
offers interchangeable disposable and bulk
ink cartridges providing ultimate flexibility
whilst minimising operating costs for longer
run lengths.
The L100i can be controlled by the Windows-based
industry standard FlexMail
thermal ink jet printer controller, which has a
simple user interface and includes database
configuration tools to allow for rapid set up.
For more advanced applications requiring
the management of multiple Domino printers
as well as product tracking and verification,
the L100i can also be managed by Domino’s
mainstay Editor GTWindows- based controller.
“This latest edition to the L-Series range
continues to underline Domino’s commitment
to providing ever more flexible and
cost effective solutions for the commercial
print and mailing industries.
The scalable single print head design of the
L100i, combined with the latest smart features
and the simplicity of thermal ink jet cartridge
technology should be the first choice
solution for many VDP requirements,” comments
Philip Easton, Director of Domino’s
Digital Printing Solutions. “Adding this to
our other thermal, continuous, binary and
piezo ink jet technology offerings means that
Domino not only has the widest range of solutions
available, but we also have the best
in class product in every technology group”.
Domino Printing Sciences amplia la famiglia
di stampanti a getto d’inchiostro
termiche Serie L con il lancio della
i-Tech (intelligent Technology, tecnologia
intelligente) per massimizzare la produttività e di
una maggiore flessibilità grazie all’esclusivo design
individualmente. Se è necessaria una larghezza
maggiore, è possibile collegare in serie fino a 32
teste di stampa. La flessibilità della L100i viene
ulteriormente migliorata attraverso l’orientamento
pl. Il risultato? Una dispersione meno evidente
dell’inchiostro e di conseguenza immagini più
nitide e ben definite.
inchiostro nero unitamente a inchiostri speciali o
stampa a getto d’inchiostro termica, rendono
questa stampante la scelta ideale per soddisfare
numerose esigenze nel settore della stampa di
dati variabili”, commenta Philip Easton, direttore
www.domino-printing.com
La nuova L100i include anche
una serie di caratteristiche
innovative progettate
per migliorare l’efficienza
operativa e consentire
l’utilizzo di inchiostri ad
asciugatura più rapida
The increasing personalization of
printed documents, the stretching
of runs, the need for specific addition
to the packaging or the label are at the base
of the development of digital printing. Habit
shifts, new technological developments,
market recession, need “to go digital” and
more, create noteworthy opportunities up
for grabs.
Digital and ready-made creativity are indissolubly
bond together. Digital is largely used
for printed electronics, active packaging,
smart labels, textile printing, multimedia. Yet
digital printing technology, when compared
to conventional printing, still encounter obstacles,
which prevent its complete development.
The massive introduction of digital in
label printing, for example, is barred mainly
by the speed of execution. Even in a world
where print runs get increasingly smaller and
fashion and marketing compete to manipulate
packaging tastes and habits, keeping a
high productivity rate is still an issue, which
requires consideration.
The availability of traditional printing technology
with the addition of digital on the
same press is the most perfect answer for
companies striving to stay competitive and
capable of processing any order, as particular
or small.
La crescente personalizzazione di
documenti stampati, la riduzione delle
tirature, il bisogno di aggiunte specifiche
al packaging o all’etichetta stanno alla
base dello sviluppo della stampa digitale.
Cambi di abitudini, nuovi sviluppi tecnologici,
recessione del mercato, bisogno di “entrare
nel digitale” e altro ancora creano opportunità
notevoli da cogliere.
Varyflex V2 package platform presses for
flexible packaging (on display at the Show
on a XFlex X6 430 8-color press).
The group making its debut in Düsseldorf is
a 4-color unit, expandable, which with the
addition of the in-line finishing possibilities of
Omet presses offers high-quality printing at
an average speed of 60 meters per minute.
With JetPlus a standard level of productivity
is secured for short runs of highly decorated
and complex artworks.
The change of digital printing from complementary
to main printing technology when
the job requires it is the real breakthrough
and it is possible on presses like Omet’s,
configured as multi-process and platform
combination. A great support is offered by
the use of die-cutting unit Monotwin Cut offering
high speed rates and no downtimes
for die or cylinder change. Among other
advantages, JetPlus is equipped with an innovative
automatic washing system, which
prevents the ink on the printing heads from
drying even when the press is in stand-by.
Label converters as long as flexible packaging
producers find in JetPlus by Omet a
new tool to compete in the market today,
extend their portfolio possibilities and accept
quite any job. With XFlex X6 and Varyflex V2
there is no limit in what is possible to print
and deliver.
Tuttavia, quando viene paragonata alla
stampa convenzionale, continua a incontrare
ostacoli che ne impediscono lo sviluppo
completo.

elevatissima: JetPlus. Sarà abbinato
in linea sia sulle macchine per
etichette XFlex X6 che sulle piattaforme
di stampa Varyflex V2 per il
packaging flessibile (in mostra durante
la fiera su una XFlex X6 430
a 8 colori).
configurate come combinazione multi-processo
e a piattaforma.
Un grande supporto viene offerto dall’uso
dell’unità di fustellatura Monotwin Cut che
permette elevate velocità e limita i tempi di
fermo macchina per la sostituzione di fustelle
o cilindri.
Thousands of print service providers
from all across the world visited
Ricoh to learn more about its rich
combination of hardware and software solutions,
services and environmental values
and how it is working with printing businesses
to manage the trends that are changing
the way ‘print’ will be purchased and used
in the future. Ricoh’s Transformation Hub
featured leading industry thinkers and Ricoh
partners, including Heidelberg talking about
its strategic partnership with Ricoh.
Some of the demonstrations that proved
popular with visitors were the InfoPrint 5000
VP, shown in Europe for the first time, the
new large format inkjet Ricoh Pro L4000
printer with latex ink and the Ricoh Pro C901
Graphic Arts Edition digital colour press.
Print and Beyond
Trends and applications showcased in
Ricoh’s Innovation Zone included technologies
with future potential such as Clickable
Paper and 3D printing, which will enable
operations to take their service proposition
beyond traditional print. Print service providers
were also attracted to the creative
solutions in the Packaging Zone to see the
short run, on demand, personalised packaging
examples such as retail boxes. On
demand applications also created a buzz,
with the InfoPrint 5000 GP (General Production)
colour printing solution customising a
book by Re.Be.L, a Turin-based variable
data digital printing specialist. The process
would allow print service providers to print
books on demand, and delivered to customers
within five hours of ordering. Rebecca
Noviello, Ceo of Re.Be.L, says: “Publishers
are benefitting from new-found freedoms to
choose the books to publish without being
influenced by the mass market, and eliminating
the stifling cost of warehouse and
distribution”. Ricoh also demonstrated how
cross-media solutions can help commercial
printers establish creative credentials that
foster stronger customer relationships.
A specialist application that generated interest
among commercial printers was the
preview of Ricoh’s ‘black box’ interface
device. Ricoh took the opportunity to get
customer feedback on the potential for link-
ing third-party systems to its digital presses.
The RPIP (Ricoh Parallel Interface Protocol)
was used on four different concept configurations
on the booth: a Pro C651 EX printer
was connected to a Nagel Uv coating and
die-cutting system for a packaging solution;
a Pro C751 was fitted with a Plockmatic
envelope inserter; a Pro C901 press had
a Nagel vacuum feeder for handling tricky
stocks; and a monochrome Pro 1357 EX
printer was fitted with a Müller unwinder and
reel sheeter.
Supporting Ricoh’s zones with advice and
guidance was the comprehensive Ricoh
Business Driver Programme. Reviewed and
updated following continual client consultation,
the programme helps operations to
accelerate their business performance. A
team of experts walked visitors through its
many business-enhancing capabilities including
new exclusive reports from PIRA
about strategic options for Print Service
Providers.
Ricoh’s approach to long-term partnerships,
services and business values where cited as
just some of the reasons for printing companies
placing new orders. Julian Barnwell
of Barnwell Print, who ordered a Ricoh Pro
C901 said, “If you look at the ethos of Ricoh
and its green credentials, it’s right on track
with our own vision. Our company culture
dovetails in perfectly with Ricoh’s philosophies”.
di fornire servizi che vanno oltre la
stampa tradizionale. I service provider hanno
mostrato interesse anche per le soluzioni
nell’area “Packaging” in cui hanno potuto
vedere esempi di prodotti personalizzati e
realizzati on demand. La soluzione a colori
InfoPrint 5000 GP (General Production) ha
consentito di approfondire le possibilità della
produzione on demand. Gli stampatori hanno
la possibilità di stampare libri in digitale,
garantendo ai clienti una produzione entro
with a multiple order of seven systems, including
the InfoPrint 5000 MP continuous
feed and digital cut sheet presses. In addition,
South African Ricoh distribution partner
Nashua secured 25 Ricoh Pro C751s to
meet fast growing regional interest in high
quality, cost effective, digital print to efficiently
manage a greater range of print run
lengths. Polish graphic arts specialist Multikop
chose the Ricoh Pro C651EX digital
colour press to enable it to move in to high
quality production printing.
The Ricoh Pro C901 Graphic Arts Edition
was selected by a large number of UK print
director Alan Bunter said, “We wanted a
press that could increase our digital print
capacity to 25% of our total business while
Drupa 2012, un grande
su ce so per Ricoh
cinque ore dall’invio dell’ordine. Rebecca
Noviello, Ceo di Re.Be.L (azienda di Torino
specializzata nella stampa di dati variabil)
afferma: “Gli editori possono così stampare
con maggiore libertà e pubblicare libri senza
farsi influenzare dal mercato e ridurre i costi
del magazzino e della distribuzione. Inoltre,
grazie alle soluzioni cross-media, i commercial
printer possono offrire servizi a valore
aggiunto alla propria clientela”.
Un’altra applicazione ha riscontrato notevole
interesse: Ricoh ‘black box’ per l’interfacciamento
dei finitori di terze parti. RPIP (Ricoh
Parallel Interface Protocol) è stato installato
in quattro diverse configurazioni nello stand:
Innovative products for major brands
LIC’s customer base encompasses prominent
players in the food-processing, chemicals,
soap and detergent, electrical goods
and glass industries, among them
Barilla, Ferrero, Nestlé, Henkel,
Procter & Gamble and other brand
names. It prints a broad spectrum
of quality products spanning simple
food trays, master boxes,
quick easy tops (QET), displays
and many other optically appealing
packaging forms.
In total, LIC’s production lines process
some 55,000 tonnes (60,500
US tons) of different substrates
per year. Its 204 employees generate
annual sales of around €55m
($72m), and rising.
Rapid growth
True to its slogan “The future demands
new solutions” this family
enterprise has evolved rapidly to
keep pace with shifting demands.
Print production is in offset and
flexo, and most of the substrates it
prints are manufactured in-house.
The conversion department, with
its folding, die-stamping, cutting, laminating
and palletising lines, allows a high degree of
product customisation.
In 1961 an offset printing company, Fraber
, was set up to produce folding cartons
for the shoemaking industry. In 1982 the
production of corrugated packaging began
under the name L.I.C. Lavorazione Imballi
Cartone Srl. In 1991 a corrugator was installed
and LIC started manufacturing the
substrates in-house. In 1998 Fraber and LIC
merged to form LIC Packaging SpA.
Activities in European markets
Over the past eleven years LIC has expanded
its activities in European markets,
entering an alliance with the Saica group, a
family Spanish company based in Zaragoza.
The purpose of an extensive investment
schedule drawn up in 2005 was to become
one of the leading packaging enterprises in
Europe. A lot of progress has already been
made towards this goal. Following the establishment
of LIC and its relocation to its
present premises two second-hand Planeta
presses were installed. The size 7 (64in) and
8a (73in) five-colour coater presses were in
service for many years.
Arrival of advanced technology
KBA technology arrived at LIC Packaging
in 2008 in the form of a six-colour Rapida
162 coater press. Satisfaction with its performance
led in spring 2011 to an order for
two new-generation Rapida 162a presses,
also six-colour coater versions. The first was
delivered at the end of the year, the second
will come on stream early this summer.
Sadly, Mr. Giovanni Bertoldo passed away
last December and so will not witness the
company’s jubilee and the start-up of the
two new KBA presses. His children, Cristina
(head of finances and administration) and
Piero (managing director of LIC Packaging)
will continue managing his company in accordance
with his wishes.
Piero Bertoldo says: “Run lengths have
shortened in packaging printing as well,
while at the same time deadline pressure
has increased and quality expectations become
more demanding. Soon, when the
two new Rapidas go into action, we can
split our production according to substrate
and job specs, enabling us to deliver the
News prodotti
quality and quantity demanded much faster
than before. Mixed production will also be
possible at any time.”
Progress and efficiency
He continues: “KBA’s new-generation largeformat
presses are much more advanced in
terms of automation, speed and flexibility in
production, makeready and quality monitoring.
For many years now our proximity to
KBA-Italia has ensured that we can depend
on quick, efficient service and trouble-free
production.”
cartotecnica italiana LIC
Packaging SpA di Verolanuova
L’azienda
(Brescia) ha investito con forza nel
proprio futuro. In occasione dei 60 anni dell’azienda
fondata nel 1952 da Giovanni Bertoldo
come tipografia commerciale, entreranno
in produzione due nuove KBA Rapida 162a
di grande formato, che contribuiranno ad
aumentare una produzione già efficiente.
Varietà di supporti di stampa e alta qualità
Entrambe le macchine a sei gruppi stampa
con torre di verniciatura dispongono di
logistica pila automatizzata, cambio lastra
completamente automatico, dispositivo di
lavaggio CleanTronic Synchro e DensiTronic
In
vernici a dispersione e UV.
elettriche. Dalla semplice vaschetta
per uso alimentare (food-tray) ai master
boxes, dalle scatole Quick Easy Tops (Qet)
fino agli espositori e alle altre attraenti forme
del packaging. Fanno parte dei committenti
Barilla, Ferrero, Nestle, Henkel, Procter &
Gamble e altri grandi marchi.
Lo specialista del packaging lavora con moderni
impianti di produzione ogni anno circa
55.000 tonnellate di materiali differenti. I suoi
204 collaboratori contribuiscono a raggiungere
un fatturato annuo – con tendenza al
rialzo – di 55 Mio. Euro.
Sviluppo vertiginoso
l’industria calzaturiera. Nel 1982 con il nome
Packaging SpA.
Attività a livello europeo
Dal 2001 LIC ha rafforzato le sue attività
a livello europeo, anche grazie all’inizio di
una collaborazione con il gruppo spagnolo
SAICA (Zaragoza). Il piano di investimenti
programmato nel 2005 aveva come scopo
quello di sviluppare l’azienda fino a diventare
un’industria leader nel settore del packaging
europeo.
SpA.
seconda entrerà in produzione all’inizio dell’estate
2012. Giovanni Bertoldo - deceduto
nel dicembre 2011 - non potrà purtroppo
essere presente ai festeggiamenti per il giubileo
aziendale e per l’entrata in produzione
delle due KBA-Jumbo. I figli Cristina (Finanza
e Amministrazione) e Piero Bertoldo (Managing
dell’azienda.
Piero Bertoldo: “Anche la stampa di
packaging ha registrato un calo delle
tirature, d’altro canto contemporaneamente
richiesta.
breve. Anche la produzione mista è comunque
sempre possibile”.
Progresso ed efficienza
“La nuova generazione del grande formato di
KBA è stata molto sviluppata nell’automazione
Inks to meet the new
requirements
Sun Chemical adds the
Streamline ESL HPQ and
Ultima HPQ to its Streamline
range
Inchiostri per rispondere
alle nuove esigenze
Sun Chemical aggiunge
Streamline ESL HPQ e Ultima
HPQ alla propria gamma
Streamline
Sun Chemical, the world’s leading
manufacturer of printing inks and
pigments, is today launching the
Streamline ESL HPQ and the Streamline
Ultima HPQ, to meet the stringent demands
of the latest wide format printing equipment.
The Streamline range is designed specifically
for use in wide and super-wide format
printers which are using high-quality solvent
based inks.
With the ever increasing pressure and developments
of the print market, Sun Chemical
is continuously making improvements to
product performance ensuring that they are
of the highest quality and meet the needs of
this expanding market.
The Streamline ESL HPQ and Ultima HPQ
ranges have been developed following extensive
feedback of customer needs. The
new products provide high print reliability
and print quality.
Nick Goodall, The Colour Crew General
Manager, participated in the beta testing
Sun Chemical, produttore leader
scheme for Sun Chemical’s Streamline Ultima
HPQ and commented: “We’ve had a
very positive experience with Ultima HPQ
- no problems at all! We had an issue with
blocked ink heads with our previous ink system
which increased the amount of down
time. Cleaning and replacing them was a
significant cost to the business. Essentially,
with Sun Chemical’s Streamline ink system,
we’re getting the highest quality ink product
and performance at half the price of OEM.”
Steve Moralee, Director, AM Printshop Ltd,
who participated in the beta testing scheme
for Streamline ESL HPQ said: “We are very
impressed with ESL HPQ. We are now also
much more in control of our ink outlay. In
the past, the amount of ink we used on a
job was so varied that it was difficult for us
to estimate the total production cost. Sun
Chemical’s new Streamline ink system has
provided us with outstanding print quality
while reducing our material costs by over
50%. This means that we are now in a position
to compete commercially on a national
level, creating a whole host of new business
opportunities.”
The new additions to the Streamline range
have been carefully matched to the original
products for both colour shade and strength
as well as physical properties, enabling customers
to continue to use all the existing settings
when converting from the original inks.
Both ranges have very high print quality that
exceed OEM product performance in many
cases and also feature excellent adhesion
to a wide range of media commonly used
in the sign and graphics markets such as;
photo labs, digital print shops, exhibition
printers, graphic art bureaus, sign shops,
screen printers, repro houses and commercial
printers.
www.sunchemical.com
solvente. Poiché i mercati sono sottoposti a
pressioni sempre maggiori, e la tecnologia è
in fase di sviluppo, Sun Chemical continua a
migliorare le prestazioni dei propri prodotti,
per garantire la massima qualità e soddisfare
le crescenti necessità di questo mercato in
espansione.
Ultima HPQ sono state sviluppate seguendo
le specifiche richieste degli utilizzatori ed i
loro feedback. I nuovi prodotti garantiscono
una elevata affidabilità e qualità di stampa.
Nick Goodall, Direttore Generale di The Colour
Crew, ha partecipato alle attività di beta
testing di Sun Chemical Streamline Ultima
HPQ ed ha commentato: “Abbiamo avuto
un’ esperienza estremamente positiva con
Ultima HPQ - assolutamente nessun problema!
Con la nostra precedente serie di
inchiostri, avevamo spesso il problema delle
testine di stampa intasate, che causavano
fermi macchina.
In breve,
grazie al sistema inchiostri Sun Chemical
Streamline, abbiamo un prodotto di altissima
qualità e massime prestazioni, alla metà
del prezzo di un prodotto OEM”.
Steve Moralee, direttore di AM Printshop
Ltd, che ha partecipato al programma di
beta testing per ESL HPQ ha dichiarato:
“Siamo molto soddisfatti di ESL HPQ. Ora
abbiamo anche molto più controllo sulla
distribuzione dell’inchiostro.
News prodotti
Product news
fotolito e stampatori commerciali.
Event
Fespa adds two further halls
in ExCeL due to increased
exhibitor demand for extra
floor space
Eventi
In London to be the
biggest Fespa show yet!
With a year to go until the event
opens, Fespa 2013 in London
(ExCeL London, 25th to
29th June 2013) is going from strength to
strength and fast becoming next year’s unmissable
exhibition for printers.
More than 310 exhibitors have already
confirmed their bookings for Fespa 2013,
nearly doubling the exhibitor numbers in
comparison to the run up to Munich in 2010.
Many exhibitors also plan to expand their
presence compared with previous shows,
adding more exhibition space to showcase
their products.
The same exhibitors who attended Munich
in 2010 have expanded their space in London
by 10%. As a result, Fespa 2013 will be
the biggest Fespa show ever, with two more
halls added to the original floor plan.
The event - which embraces screen and
textile printing as well as digital wide format
- will take place at the state-of-the-art
ExCeL London exhibition centre in the City’s
vibrant Docklands area. ExCeL’s halls will
play host to the richest showcase yet of
printed graphics, signage, promotional print,
industrial print and garment decoration.
The success of Fespa Digital 2012 in Barcelona
earlier this year motivated the strongest
ever re-booking from those exhibitors.
By the end of February, Fespa had bookings
for 108% of the space occupied by
the Barcelona show. Major industry players
HP, Canon Océ, Fujifilm, Agfa, Mimaki, EFI,
Durst, Roland, inks producer Sun Chemical
and global screen printing suppliers SAATI
and Sefar are all confirmed as exhibitors for
2013. There will also be a large presence of
media companies including 3M, Hexis, Mactac
and Orafol, highlighting the new print
applications that substrates are opening up
for printers. Fespa Fabric 2013, the event’s
garment decoration exhibition, already has
support from leading textile printing companies
Kornit, Siser, Anajet, MHM, Polyone
Wilflex, SRoque and international screen
printing manufacturer M&R.
Fespa Managing Director Neil Felton comments:
“This immediate and resounding
commitment to Fespa in London reflects
the positive attendance at the Digital 2012
show, which demonstrated the Fespa team’s
ability to maximise a new host city to refresh
our visitor audience. The move to Barcelona
brought our exhibitors a truly international
audience from 120 countries, while many
Iberian visitors - who represented over 45%
of attendance – were new to Fespa.”
He continues: “Our move to London for
2013 will enable us to make Fespa’s flagship
show a truly global event, attracting printers
and their customers from every continent.
More people can reach London from more
locations in less time than any other city in
the world. With its matchless heritage in
print, business, communication and design,
it’s the ideal destination for this show.
Since the last flagship Fespa in 2010, Fespa
has delivered an active programme of exhibitions
and summits in Latin America and
Asia. With our unique network of 37 National
Associations in Europe, Asia, Australasia,
and the Americas, and a global community
of thousands of PSPs, we’re confident that
the London 2013 event will have a more
international flavour than ever before.”
Fespa is exploring many avenues to extend
the reach of the event, and to incorporate
innovative content-led visitor features, some
of which were introduced for the first time
in Barcelona, and some of which will make
their debut on London.
Neil Felton concludes, “While still in the early
stages of planning, our vision is to deliver
a Fespa 2013 event that is bursting with
ideas to motivate and inspire our visitors,
and which reflects the colour and dynamism
of the host city. Fespa 2013 will reflect everything
that is trending in screen, digital and
textile print, strongly backed by the leading
vendors and organisations in the industry.
We look forward to revealing even more
of Fespa’s exciting news over the next few
weeks and months, including new areas,
features and conferences that will run alongside
or at the show”.
Ad un anno esatto prima dell’apertura
della nuova edizione, Fespa 2013
a Londra (ExCeL Londra, dal 25 al
29 giugno 2013), si rafforza sempre di più e
sta diventando rapidamente l’evento da non
perdere per gli stampatori nel prossimo anno.
Più di 310 espositori hanno già confermato
la propria prenotazione per il Fespa 2013,
quasi raddoppiando i numeri della partecipazione
rispetto all’edizione di Monaco 2010.
Molti espositori hanno inoltre intenzione di
espandere la propria presenza rispetto alle
precedenti fiere, aggiungendo più spazio
espositivo da dedicare alla presentazione dei
propri prodotti.
Gli stessi espositori che hanno partecipato
a Monaco 2010 hanno allargato del 10% il
proprio spazio espositivo a Londra. Come risultato,
principali nomi del settore, HP, Canon Océ,
Fujifilm, Agfa, Mimaki, EFI, Durst, Roland, i
produttori di inchiostri Sun Chemical e i fornitori
di stampa serigrafica SAATI e Sefar
sono tutti espositori confermati per il 2013.
Ci sarà anche una nutrita rappresentanza di
aziende che producono supporti quali 3M,
Hexis, Mactac e Orafol, e che porteranno in
evidenza nuove applicazioni di stampa rese
possibili dai nuovi materiali. Fespa Fabric
2013, l’evento dedicato alla decorazione di
indumenti, ha già incassato il supporto di
aziende leader nella stampa tessile, tra cui
Kornit, Siser, Anajet, MHM, Polyone Wilflex,
SRoque e l’azienda internazionale di stampa
serigrafica M&R.
Il direttore generale di Fespa, Neil Felton,
commenta: “Questo successo immediato
e deciso di Fespa a Londra riflette l’andamento
positivo della partecipazione alla fiera
Digital 2012, e dimostra la capacità del team
Fespa di sfruttare al massimo le opportunità
Eventi
Event
A Londra, la più
grande Fespa mai
organizzata!
Londra infatti
può essere raggiunta da moltissime persone
in meno tempo rispetto a qualsiasi altra città
stati organizzati numerosi eventi e convegni
in America Latina e in Asia. Con la nostra
esclusiva rete di 37 Associazioni Nazionali in
Europa, Asia, Australia, e nelle Americhe, oltre
come mai prima”. Fespa sta esplorando diverse
strade per ampliare l’impatto di questo
Finat announced the winners
of its 32nd label awards
competition at the award
ceremony of its annual
congress in Athens
Eventi
Design and technical
excellence combined
This year proved to be a strong year.
The competition attracted 325 entries
or the third highest number ever.
Entries are coming from 52 companies,
including new countries from Latin-America,
namely Brazil and Peru. The judging panel of
this year’s label competition included Murat
Sipahioglu (Avery Dennison, Turkey), Steve
Wood (UK), an expert in screen printing and
other printing processes, Gregory Kokkoris
(Dot Repro, Greece), Lianne van den Berg
(Cartils, The Netherlands) and chairman of
the judging panel Tony White (UK).
Refining categories: wine
Each year Finat looks at ways in which it
can refine the competition. This year it was
agreed that all wine labels should be entered
in their own category. Wine labels usually
gravitate towards higher quality by the nature
of their design. This sometimes meant
that good quality entries in other classes did
not feature in the top awards.
Finat has been rewarded with more than 40
entries in this new ‘Wine’ category resulting
in a ‘Best in Show’ award and 13 Highly
Commended certificates. Finat believes that
this will become an even more popular category
in future years. The same can be said
of the cosmetic category where all the cosmetic
labels were grouped under one class.
This was even more of a success with more
over 70 entries in this category.
Best in Show winner: a real credit to
the wine and label industry
The ’Best in Show’ and the ’Marketing/End-
Uses Group’ awards went to Collotype Labels
Usa for its Le Pich label.
“This is an outstanding label on many levels,”
commented Tony White. “We were extremely
impressed not only by the technical
excellence of the label, but also by its artistic
appearance. “The design is very authoritative
and confident. This label would sell
the wine purely on the quality of the label.
Its dramatic look grabs the consumer’s attention.
Using the screen and offset litho
processes along with delicate and very accurate
foiling with the additional bonus of
embossing the whole label exudes quality.
Many of the winners from this year’s competition
will be entered in the World Label
Awards competition which will take place
just before Labelexpo Usa in September.
From the previous year’s Finat winners 5
received a World Label award including the
Schreiner Group (D), Royston Labels (UK),
Skanem Introl (PL), Etimag Etiket (TR) and
Connubio di eccellenza
tra design e tecnica
Quella di quest’anno si è dimostrata
un’edizione competitiva, con 325
lavori inviati: il terzo migliore risultato
di tutti i tempi in termini di volume. I lavori
sono stati inviati da 52 aziende, alcune da
Paesi sudamericani alla loro prima partecipazione,
come il Brasile e il Perù. Nella giuria
di quest’anno:
Murat Sipahioglu (Avery Dennison, Turchia),
Steve Wood (Regno Unito), esperto di serigrafia
e altri processi di stampa, Gregory
Kokkoris (Dot Repro, Grecia), Lianne van
den Berg (Cartils, Paesi Bassi) e il presidente
Tony White (Regni Unito).
in show” e 13 certificati di particolare merito
(Highly Commended). Finat crede che questa
categoria diverrà ancora più popolare
negli anni a venire. Lo stesso vale per quella
dedicata ai cosmetici, nella quale tutte le
etichette sono state raggruppate in un’unica
classe. Questa categoria è stata ancora più
gettonata, con ben 70 lavori inviati.
Vincitore “Best in Show”: un vero tributo
all’industria vinicola e delle etichette
I premi “Best in Show” e “gruppo marketing/
delicato e accurato e all’ulteriore effetto della
prenderanno parte al concorso World Label
USA in settembre.
Solutions and
challenges for
self-adhesive labelling
Self-adhesive labels have contributed
significant benefits to packaging;
and their versatility, cleanliness, and
variability have made them firm favourites in
many key fmcg market sectors – on foods
(both as primary and secondary product
labels and for ‘priceweigh’ applications and
other variable information print); on personal
and homecare products; and, particularly,
on beverages.
The beverage boom
The global growth in premium beers has
proved a dynamic self-adhesive label market
around the globe in recent years; and wines
– both premium cuvées and bulk supermarket
qualities – are toby ay enjoying the
eyecatching on-shelf appeal that short- or
long-run self-adhesive labels can create,
both by the traditional print processes and
by today’s high-quality digital label print. This
flexibility has made ‘limited editions’ a practical
possibility. ‘Fashion’ soft drinks, such as
smoothies, juices, and CSDs (carbonated
soft drinks) are also popular users of the
self-adhesive label, which delivers a variety
of innovative finishes and effects on a wide
choice of label face materials – including
textured papers, foils, and clear films (which
give the favoured ‘no label look’ on a clear
container).
A designer’s dream
The unique self-adhesive laminate also
makes it possible to diecut exceptionally
complex label shapes on press – a designer’s
dream – and to apply multiple labels
(front, back, neckstrap, etc) in just one pass
on the packaging line. Finally, track-andtrace,
product authentication, and tamperevident
features can be an intrinsic part of a
self-adhesive label.
Sustainability issues
As a key contributor to the global packaging
industry, the self-adhesive label industry is
as committed to the cause of sustainability
as all its peers. However, it faces some
unique challenges in the context of sustainability
– in relation to the industry’s extremely
long, complex, and specialised value chain.
At the heart of a self-adhesive label is the
‘sandwich’ of a face material, adhesive,
release coating, and release liner. In itself,
this is a combination of many different
components, to which must be added the
printing inks and other on-press processes
that create the finished label, ready for automatic
application to a product. No single
level of the value chain can offer a full and
detailed picture of the process of delivering
a self-adhesive label; but, despite this complexity,
the self-adhesive label industry must
present a single, united profile if it is to be
able to communicate with, and partner, the
brand owners, the retailers, and ultimately
the consumers in the environmental arena.
It makes sense for an industry association
such as Finat, which represents the whole
label production value chain -- raw material
suppliers, labelstock coaters and laminators,
and label converters -- to take on that
responsibility.
For a number of years, Finat has been
creating and updating industry-standard
performance test methods, and – with an
increasing number of sister organisations
around the world – is currently engaged
in advancing a detailed formal agenda for
step-by-step actions to make our industry
‘greener’. We are also actively supporting a
raft of initiatives in the recycling arena.
Environmental initiatives
This in itself may not sound like a major set
of challenges – but, again, the value chain
is complex, and there is a proliferation of
environmental initiatives in the broad print/
packaging manufacturing context, at many
levels.
There are the environmental management
systems like ISO 14001, Lean Six Sigma,
and the US-based Tag and Label Manufacturers
Institute’s industry-specific ‘LIFE’
system (‘Label Initiative For the Environment’).
Certification to environmental sourcing
standards – like FSC and PEFC for papers
– are other possible pathways. Brand
owners’ and end users’ own environmental
standards for their suppliers, like the Wal-
Mart Supplier Sustainability Assessment,
add further complexity.
While the raw material suppliers and the
major coater/laminators represent, in the
main, manufacturers at a global scale, the
self-adhesive label converters themselves
are mostly small-to-medium-sized enterprises
for whom such additional agendas
are difficult to support.
Nevertheless, Finat member companies
across the value chain are, individually,
actively delivering technology solutions to
reduce waste all round and improve their
carbon footprint; to be Reach-compliant,
particularly in relation to adhesives and coatings;
to explore new label and release liner
substrates and adhesive technologies; and
to use thinner materials all round without
compromising performance.
A single industry profile
But there are limits to which individual companies
operating in a competitive business
environment can go in meeting the needs
of the ‘three Ps’: people, planet, and profit.
So, there is a distinct rôle for an association
such as Finat in the label sustainability
arena: to combine the aspirations of the
many levels of the value chain into a single
agenda, and to represent all its members
(within the broader context of the global
packaging industry) to the ultimate buyers
of its products – the brand owners, retailers,
and consumers.
Interviste
Interviews
The Global Packaging Project
Unquestionably, the brand owners and retailers
have established an outstanding sustainability
platform, in the form of the Consumer
Goods Forum’s Global Packaging
Project. It is bringing together the world’s
leading manufacturers and retailers, along
with their packaging suppliers at every level
and related industry associations, as a single
group of people with a single agenda. This
group has already defined what is now the
accepted framework for informed debate
on sustainability concerns throughout the
supply chain: the Global Protocol on Packaging
Sustainability. Through its common
professional sustainability language that
transcends the boundaries of commercial
advantage, the GPPS is facilitating a meaningful
dialogue between customers and
suppliers on appropriate parameters to be
used to measure environmental progress.
Finat is an active supporter, representing
the interests of both the thousands of label
converters in Europe, and further afield, who
provide finished labels for the end users, as
well as its valued supplier company members.
I personally believe that if any initiative
will deliver a real blueprint for the optimal
combination of environmental-friendliness
and fit-for-purpose packaging, it will be this
worldwide forum of suppliers and users.
EU Packaging Waste Directive
At a regional level, self-adhesive labels must
meet the requirements of the EU Packaging
Waste Directive, which is driving change
in Europe through legislation and punitive
levies for non-conformance. Here, in the
self-adhesive label industry, waste management,
recycling, and recyclability are priority
issues in relation to one particular part of the
self-adhesive label laminate – the release
liner. Release liner is the ‘hero’ of the selfadhesive
label conversion and automatic
application processes, delivering superb
handling characteristics on the printing
press and in label application. However, it is
also a perceived problem for the recycling
lobby since, once a self-adhesive label has
been automatically applied to the product,
the release liner that delivered it is effectively
redundant, its purpose fulfilled. The latest
revision to the Packaging Waste Directive in
its final draft that was recently submitted to
the Council of Ministers is consistent with
Finat’s definition of used liner as process
waste as opposed to packaging waste – but
this is not the end of the story. In individual
national legislation in a number of countries
around Europe – including The Netherlands
and the UK -- spent release liner has been
defined as packaging waste at the end of its
working life, and is therefore the subject of
a financial levy.
A final decision from the EU is expected
this summer and, whichever way it goes, it
will have a significant effect on the market’s
perception of self-adhesive labelling. It is,
however, FINAT’s opinion that, without its
empowering release liner, the self-adhesive
label’s overarching package of benefits
-- versatility, flexibility, accurate, clean, fast
label dispensing (sometimes in multiples
in the one machine pass) -- would not be
achievable.
Release liner recyclability
Whatever the final outcome in European
waste legislation, it is being proved in many
arenas that release liner, both paper- and
film-based, is recyclable, despite its release
coating. Finat is driving and supporting practical
initiatives to create viable waste collection
and recycling schemes, which are
becoming increasingly commercially active.
I encourage brand owners and retailers, as
well as their label converters, to join together
and buy in to what could be a real gamechanger
for the self-adhesive label industry
by participating in formal liner waste collection
schemes.
Paper release liner base remains the choice
for the vast majority of label applications,
and there is a developing choice of solutions
for its recycling and re-use. Film-based
release liners are, however, also gaining mar-
these relatively high-cost liners – and perhaps,
in the process, creating an additional
revenue stream -- is an option today. ‘Clean’
used Pet liner is a highly-desirable commodity
– and it is a priority to develop a supply
chain structure to make collection and
recycling simple, financially attractive, and
effective for all concerned in the process.
Waste collection
Liner waste, ultimately, is generated at the
contract packer’s, brand owner’s, or retailer’s
premises, and is therefore largely out of
the hands of the label production chain. Finat’s
prime task, therefore, within the Global
Packaging Project and other packaging
industry initiatives, is to make end users
aware of how they can link with their label
suppliers to deliver sustainability in terms of
liner waste collection for recycling and reuse.
As well as confronting, managing, and addressing
major issues like this, Finat continues
to provide a ‘green umbrella’ for its
member companies in terms of ongoing
educational support on good manufacturing
and environmental health and safety
practice.
Some of the topics we currently embrace
are ink migration and set-off, solvent usage,
safe Uv curing, and other pressroom issues
-- with the interests of the users (particularly
in the food and beverage arena) a central
concern.
Packaging buyers, brand managers, and
carta-tessuto, carta metallica e pellicole
trasparenti (il che garantisce il tanto amato
look “senza etichetta” sui contenitori
trasparenti).
Il sogno di ogni designer
L’esclusivo supporto accoppiato autoadesivo
rende inoltre possibile la fustellatura
di forme estremamente complesse – un
sogno per un designer - e l’applicazione
di diverse etichette (fronte, retro, ecc.)
in un unico passaggio all’interno della linea
di imballaggio. Infine, le opzioni di
tracciabilità, autenticazione dei prodotti
e sigilli antimanomissione possono costituire
elementi intrinseci di un’etichetta
autoadesiva.
Sostenibilità
In quanto attore chiave del settore globale
degli imballaggi, il mercato delle etichette
autoadesive si impegna assieme agli altri
a favore della sostenibilità.
Tuttavia, si trova anche a dovere affrontare
delle sfide specifiche nell’ambito della sostenibilità,
a causa della catena di valore
estremamente lunga, complessa e specializzata
di questo settore.
Alla base di un’etichetta autoadesiva si
trova il “sandwich” autoadesivo costituito
dal frontale, dall’adesivo, dal rivestimento
del supporto siliconato e dal supporto
siliconato.
ultima analisi, i consumatori.
È logico quindi che un’associazione industriale
qual è Finat, che rappresenta
l’intera catena di valore nella produzione
di etichette (fornitori di materie prime, rivestitori
e accoppiatori di materiale per
etichette e i trasformatori delle etichette)
si assuma tale responsabilità.
Per diversi anni, Finat ha lavorato alla
creazione e all’aggiornamento dei metodi
detto, complessa, e nell’ampio contesto
della produzione e stampa di imballaggi
stanno proliferando le iniziative ambientali
a diversi livelli.
Esistono sistemi di gestione ambientale
come ISO 14001, Lean Six Sigma e
il sistema “LIFE” (Label Initiative For the
Environment) specifico per il settore dell’Istituto
Tag and Label Manufacturers con
sede negli USA. La certificazione in base
agli standard per le fonti ambientali - co-
Interviste
Interviews
seguire.
e rappresentarne tutti i membri (all’interno
del contesto più ampio del settore globale
degli imballaggi) fino agli acquirenti finali
dei prodotti, ovvero i proprietari dei marchi,
i rivenditori e i consumatori.
Il Global Packaging Project
Senza dubbio, i proprietari dei marchi e i
rivenditori hanno creato una piattaforma
eccezionale relativamente alla sostenibilità,
ovvero il Global Packaging Project del
Consumer Goods Forum.
Questa iniziativa sta riunendo i produttori
e i rivenditori leader a livello globale, assieme
siliconato. Il supporto siliconato è il
protagonista dei processi di applicazione
automatica e di lavorazione delle etichette
autoadesive perché è in grado di garantire
eccezionali caratteristiche di gestione in
macchina da stampa e nell’applicazione
di etichette.
Tuttavia, viene percepita anche come un
problema dalla lobby del riciclo poiché,
una volta che l’etichetta autoadesiva viene
applicata automaticamente al prodotto,
il supporto siliconato che ha consentito
l’applicazione diviene effettivamente superfluo.
La più recente revisione della direttiva sui
rifiuti da imballaggio nella sua bozza finale,
presentata recentemente al Consiglio dei
ministri, è conforme alla definizione del
supporto siliconato usata di Finat, che lo
considera un rifiuto da lavorazione anziché
un rifiuto da imballaggio, ma questo non
è tutto.
Interviste
soggetto a imposta.
garantiti.
Riciclabilità del supporto siliconato
Qualunque sarà la decisione recepita dalla
legislazione europea sul riciclo, è stato dimostrato
in numerosi casi che il supporto
siliconato in carta o in film è riciclabile,
nonostante il suo rivestimento siliconato.
Finat sta promuovendo e sostenendo
iniziative pratiche per creare programmi
di raccolta e riciclo rifiuti che stanno
diventando sempre più attivi dal punto
di vista commerciale. Incoraggio i proprietari
trasformatori, a coalizzarsi e a investire in
ciò che potrebbe rivelarsi una soluzione
rivoluzionaria per il settore delle etichette
autoadesive, mediante la partecipazione
a progetti formali di raccolta dei supporti
siliconati.
riciclo e riutilizzo.
Queste basi stanno tuttavia guadagnando
utenti finali in merito a come possono
collaborare con i loro fornitori di etichette
per garantire la sostenibilità in termini di
raccolta di questi rifiuti a scopo di riciclo
e riutilizzo.
sicurezza.
Alcuni degli argomenti attualmente trattati
sono la migrazione e le sbavature degli
inchiostri, l’utilizzo di solventi, l’essiccazione
Uv sicura e altri problemi relativi alla
sala stampa, mantenendo l’attenzione
precedenti.
Sono a buon diritto attori importanti all’interno
nostro ambiente.
Helps its customers raise their
sensitive production
Sidel has refined its aseptic
Combi Predis FMa technology
to answer the growing
demand of aseptic filling
In 2012, Sidel will go further in terms of
filling technologies for sensitive products,
introducing its new high-speed
version of Combi Predis FMa, dedicated
to single-serve bottles.
With the latest and fastest generation of
Combi Predis FMa, Sidel will meet the
needs of the sensitive beverages industry
for reduced operational costs and higher
sustainability.
Sidel has refined its aseptic Combi Predis
FMa technology to answer the growing
demand of aseptic filling of teas, juices,
nectars and isotonics.
The new high-speed version will be capable
of handling up to 48,000 bottles
per hour for small containers of up to 700
milliliters, used mainly for on-the-go consumption.
The new High Speed Combi Predis FMa is
the ideal solution for markets that require
high output and for countries where water
resources are scarce.
Predis is suitable for aseptic bottling of
any kind of beverages whether low or high
acid: fruit juices, teas, isotonic beverages,
carbonated soft drinks without preservatives,
liquid dairy products and UHT milk.
The Combi Predis FMa technology replaces
bottle rinsing by dry preforms decontamination
using hydrogen peroxide.
Predis dry solution does not require any
water and creates no effluent, saving 250
cubic meters of water and 200 liters of
chemicals used daily on a traditional aseptic
bottling line.
Dry preforms decontamination also cuts
annual operating costs by 30 percent
compared to traditional dry bottle decontamination.
It enables sterilization of all types of preforms
(Predis) and caps (Capdis) and is
available in different configurations. Since
bottles are blown from decontaminated
preforms, the empty bottle does not endure
any thermal stress and can be given
any shape and design.
Economical, ecological and flexible
The Combi Predis technology combines
bottle blow molding, filling and capping in
a single system.
The technology ensures high standards
of hygiene as dry decontamination guarantees
100 percent sterilization without hygienic
rinsing, as required by traditional filling
methods.
This procedure offers increased cost effectiveness
along with high product quality
and environmental benefits due to water
savings and minimized amounts of chemicals
used.
Further advantages include energy savings,
a smaller footprint and the potential
for lighter bottles. Quick and easy format
and liquid changeovers are possible, as
well as 120 hours of non-stop production.
The Predis technology for aseptic filling
has been adopted worldwide since 2006.
Over 60 dry preforms decontamination
systems have been sold to date, equaling
more than five billion bottles produced
with Predis globally.
Aiuta i suoi clienti a raggiungere
l’e cellenza
Nel 2012, la Sidel rafforzerà ulteriormente
la sua grande esperienza
nelle tecnologie di riempimento dei
prodotti sensibili grazie all’ultima generazione
isotoniche.
senza conservanti, prodotti a base latte
e latte UHT.
a cambi formato e a cambi prodotto semplici
e veloci e a una produzione
non-stop di 120 ore.
La tecnologia Predis
per il riempimento in
asettico ha fatto la
sua comparsa a livello
mondiale nel 2006.
A tutt’oggi, sono stati
venduti oltre sessanta
sistemi di decontaminazione
a secco
delle preforme, ciò
significa che, con
Predis, nel mondo
sono già stati prodotti
oltre cinque
miliardi di bottiglie.
