Cruises in collaboration with UNIS
The financial situation did not allow the project to conduct cruises entirely dedicated to the
aims of the project. However, collaboration was undertaken with the University Studies at
Svalbard (UNIS) in connection with graduate-courses in benthology (AB 301). These courses
were taught in 1995, 1996 and 1997. Some of the members of the “DN-Working Group”
participated as teachers, and records of marine organisms from these cruises are included in
the database.
To achieve a maximal supplement to the database and mapping of marine organisms in
Svalbard waters, the database was used in planning of the cruises and sampling effort was
directed to areas with a particular lack of data,. Effort was also put into using sampling
techniques supplementing earlier sampling. Grab sampling using the 0.1 m 2 van Veen grab,
and dredging using benthic sledges such as the “Sneli-sledge” (Sneli 1998) and the “RPsledge”
(see Brattegard & Fosså 1991) were more frequently used than in investigations
mentioned in the literature-list (Appendix 2). The latter two sledges are especially efficient
collecting the organisms living in the upper layer or just above the softer sediments.
