Under the contract, signed by Fiat and all the unions with the exception of FIOM, the new company at Pomigliano will take on 4,600 employees and raise wages. The rift separating CGIL engineering workers from the other unions is growing. Yesterday, there were harsh exchanges as the confrontation continued to impact on left-of-centre parties, generating new splits. The Democratic Party (PD) is in favour of the agreement while more radical groups support FIOM. According to Maurizio Sacconi, the employment minister, the contract “is driven by practical needs, not ideological projects”. LA RUSSA,CON BRASILE STESSI RAPPORTI,MA CONSEGUEN- ZE - "I rapporti con il Brasile potranno restare gli stessi, non è che interrompiamo le relazioni diplomatiche, ma le conseguenze ci saranno". Lo ha detto il ministro della Difesa, Ignazio La Russa, a SkyTg24. "Per quanto riguarda il trattato italobrasiliano, che riguarda anche la Difesa, io dico - ha aggiunto - che il Governo l'ha già votato e non possiamo modificarlo, ma deve passare dal Parlamento. C'é un clima che consente a questo trattato di essere sicuramente approvato dal Parlamento? Non lo so, credo che non ci sia più un clima estremamente favorevole". Sulla posizione del presidente del Consiglio sulla vicenda, La Russa ha affermato che "Berlusconi ha evitato di fare dichiarazioni pubbliche sul caso Battisti proprio per non dare l'impressione che noi ponessimo al Brasile un aut aut, una strategia che ha portato alla sentenza a favore della nostra tesi. Quindi, la strada seguita dall'Italia è stata vincente fino a ieri. La decisione di non alzare i toni da parte di Berlusconi era figlia del convincimento che avessimo già ottenuto il risultato". Ma "quella di Lula - ha sottolineato - é stata una decisione tutta rivolta verso la politica interna brasiliana, quasi un regalo alle frange estreme del suo partito, che esula dai rapporti bilaterali Italia-Brasile". "Per quanto mi riguarda - ha ribadito La Russa - risponderò positivamente a tutte le iniziative che chiederanno i parenti delle vittime: sarò alla manifestazione di Milano davanti al consolato brasiliano e aderirò a tutte le proposte, che siano naturalmente rispettose della legalità, che avanzeranno i parenti delle vittime di Battisti e del terrorismo. Se mi chiedessero di boicottare, io boicotterò, se mi chiedessero di non andare in Brasile - ma questo anche se non me lo chiedono - io non mi recherò in Brasile fintanto che questa decisione non sarà profondamente modificata". DI PIETRO CON- TESTATO A SIT-IN ROMA, 'TERRORISTA' - Il leader dell'Italia dei Valori, Antonio Di Pietro, è stato interrotto durante il suo intervento al sit-in di protesta sul caso Cesare Battisti a Roma davanti all'ambasciata del Brasile da un piccolo gruppo di manifestanti che gli hanno urlato: "Terrorista sei te, buffone". BERLUSCONI: E' UN CRIMINALE VERO, ESTRADIZIONE NON E'VENDETTA - ''Mi sono radicato nell'idea che Battisti ha rivestito di ideologia politica una sua realta' di criminale vero''. Lo ha affermato il presidente del Consiglio, Silvio Berlsconi, al termine dell'incontro con Alberto Torregiani, figlio di Pierluigi, il gioielliere assassinato da Cesare Battisti nel febbraio 1979. ''Questa vicenda non riguarda i buoni rapporti che abbiamo con il Brasile ma un caso di giustizia per cui i nostri rapporti con quel Paese non cambieranno a causa di questa situazione'', ha poi aggiunto. E la richiesta di estradizione al Brasile non e' ''un fatto di vendetta, vogliamo si affermi la giustizia che ogni volta che e' lesa riguarda tutti''. VICENDA TOR- REGIANI MI HA COLPITO MOLTO - Il presidente del consiglio Silvio Berlusconi e' rimasto colpito dalla storia della famiglia Torregiani e, in particolare, di Alberto, che e' rimasto su una sedia a rotelle. ''La sua - ha spiegato Berlusconi - e' una vicenda che mi ha colpito molto. Il signor Torregiani non solo ha perso il padre ma ha subito una grave infermita'. ''Ho espresso la mia solidarieta', quella del Governo e della mia parte politica - ha detto Berlusconi - e ho proposto al signor Torregiani di venire a Bruxelles la terza settimana di gennaio dove, con il Partito Popolare Europeo, organizzeremo una conferenza stampa per far conoscere la realta' dei fatti e arrivare fino alla corte di giustizia de L'Aja''. Il presidente del Consiglio ha quindi spiegato di aver aderito all'iniziativa del sottosegretario Daniela Santanche' di incontrare Alberto Torregiani: ''Mi sono intrattenuto con lui, mi ha raccontato il suo caso e sono rimasto molto impressionato''. During the morning, UIL union secretary Luigi Angeletti accused FIOM of being “a political movement”, triggering a high-octane clash. “It’s only self-defence by a union tucked firmly into the company’s pocket. Angeletti and Bonanni are a disgrace to Italian unions”, replied the chair of FIOM’s central committee, Giorgio Cremaschi, who in turn was slammed by CISL’s Giorgio Santini for “unacceptable instigation of violence against the CISL and UIL general secretaries”. The clash between FIOM and the PD reached fever pitch as FIOM secretary Maurizio Landini called on PD leaders to “go and work on an assembly line before saying anything”. “Landini doesn’t work on one either. This is senseless pointscoring. The workers will assess what the agreement is worth and everyone will have to take note democratically”, replied Massimo D’Alema, describing the Mirafiori agreement as “acceptable in its production-related section because it envisages sacrifices and a special commitment to ensure productivity, but also considerable investment and guarantees of employment”. The only unacceptable point “is Fiat’s political demand to exclude those who do not endorse the agreement from managing union relations. “I would say to Marchionne that excluding dissenters is not a good rule”, Mr D’Alema concluded.
