Riva Castello führt abwärts zur Piazza
Cavour, die vom Uhrturm des Doms
von SS. Ilario und Tiziano überragt
wird. Der Platz stellt, zusammen mit
der anliegenden Piazza Sant’ Antonio,
auf einer Seite durch die breite
Kolonnade des Palazzo xLantieri (XVI
Jhdt) abgegrenzt, das Herz der
Altstadt dar. Hier hielten sich verschiedene
hervorragende Künstler,
welche die Innenräume dekorierten,
sowie auch berühmte Persönlichkeiten
wie Casanova, Goldoni, Papst Pio VI
auf (geführte Besichtigungen werden
gelegentlich organisiert). Auf der
anderen Seite des Platzes ist die schöne
Fassade des Palazzo Strassoldo
(XVIII Jhdt, Residenz der letzten
Bourbonen Frankreichs) zu bewundern.
Weiter durch Via Rastello,
gelangen wir zur Piazza della Vittoria,
die von der Kirche Sant Ignazio mit
ihren charakterichen Zwiebeltürmen
beherrscht wird, errichtet ab 1654
von den Jesuiten und um die Mitte
des XVIII Jhdts vollendet. In der
nahen Piazza De Amicis kann man
Palazzo Attems Petzenstein bewundern:
nach einem Plan Gorizianer
Architekten Nicolo Pacassi erbaut, der
auch an der Planung von Schloss
Schönbrunn in Wien mitwirkte, stellt
er ein beachtliches und repräsentatives
Beispiel der Architektur von Gorizia
im XVIII Jhdt dar. Weitere kostbare
Werke von Pacassi sind der
Neptunsbrunnen (Piazza Vittoria)
und Palazzo Attems Santa Croce (Sitz
der Stadtverwaltung in Piazza
Municipio). In der Synagoge (Via
Ascoli) innerhalb des ehemaligen städtischen
Judengemeinde eingerichtet,
in dem ausserdem eine interessante
Abteilung dem Philosophen Carlo
Michelstädter aus Gorizia gewidmet
ist. Nach Verlassen der Stadtmitte,
entlang der baumgesäumten Viale XX
Settembre stellt der weitläufige, herrliche
Park der Villa Coronini eine
angenehmen Rast im Grünen dar.
Inmitten der bezaubernden
Landschaft lädt die Villa aus dem XVI
Jhdt, im vergangenen Jahrhunert
restauriert und erweitert, dazu ein,
das wertvolle Erbgut der Familie
Coronini Cronberg zu entdecken.
SIGHTSEEING ROUTE
T
his route stars at the Castle –
closed on Mondays –, that
dominates the town and its
surroundings by its characteristic
fortified town, that during the
Middle Ages was the residence of the
Counts of Gorizia. The castle after
the destruction of the Great War,
was extensively restored and rebuilt,
letting the old structures of the XIII
century Counts’ Palace
and the XV century
Provincial States Palace
riemerge. The route continues
on the patrol parapets,
from where visitors
can enjoy a wonderful
view. Crossing the ancient
town, surrounded by the
austere XVI century
bastions, there can be
found the little Gothic
Chiesa di Santo Spirito,
the oldest in Gorizia.
Nearby, there is the
Museo della Grande
Guerra, Moda, Arti
Applicate, Collezione
Archeologica (Case
Dornberg and Tasso) and the Museo
Etnografico (Casa Formentini) – closed
on Mondays. Going along Riva
Castello that reaches to Piazza Cavour
on which dominates the bell tower of
the Duomo dei S.S. Ilario e Tiziano.
The square is the heart of the historical
centre, together with the adjacent
Piazza S.Antonio, delimitated on one
side by the large colonnade of the XVI
century Palazzo Lantieri. Here stayed
many distinguished personalities such
as: Casanova, Metastasio, Goldoni and
Pope Pius VI and many artists who
decorated its interior (guided tours are
organized). On the other side of the
square there can be admired the beutiful
XVIII century facade of Palazzo
Strassoldo (residence of the last
Borbons of France). Walking through
Via Rastello that leads to Piazza della
Vittoria, dominated by the Chiesa di S.
Ignazio with its characteristic onionshaped
domes, which the Jesuits started
building in 1654 and finished in
the mid-XVIII century. In the vicinities,
on the Piazza De Amicis, Palazzo

Petzenstein can be
admired: it was
built on a project
by
the
Shoenbrunn Royal
Palace in Vienna,
and it is a
remarkable and
representative
example of the
XVIII century
Gorizian architecture.
Other valuable
work by
Pacassi are the
Fontana del
Nettuno in Piazza
della Vittoria and
Palazzo Attems S. Croce, which today
is the seat of the town hall (Piazza del
Municipio). The Synagogue, situated
in via Ascoli inside the old Jewish ghetto,
has been transformed into the
Museo della Comunicà Ebraica
Goriziana, and it also contains an interesting
section dedicated to the
Gorizian philosopher Carlo
Michelstaedter. Leaving the centre of
the town and following the tree-lined
Viale XX Settembre, a pleasant stop
can be made in the large and beautiful
Parco di Villa Coronini.
