Riva Castello führt abwärts zur Piazza<br />

Cavour, die vom Uhrturm des Doms<br />

von SS. Ilario und Tiziano überragt<br />

wird. Der Platz stellt, zusammen mit<br />

der anliegenden Piazza Sant’ Antonio,<br />

auf e<strong>in</strong>er Seite durch die breite<br />

Kolonnade des Palazzo xLantieri (XVI<br />

Jhdt) abgegrenzt, das Herz der<br />

Altstadt dar. Hier hielten sich verschiedene<br />

hervorragende Künstler,<br />

welche die Innenräume dekorierten,<br />

sowie auch berühmte Persönlichkeiten<br />

wie Casanova, Goldoni, Papst Pio VI<br />

auf (geführte Besichtigungen werden<br />

gelegentlich organisiert). Auf der<br />

anderen Seite des Platzes ist die schöne<br />

Fassade des Palazzo Strassoldo<br />

(XVIII Jhdt, Residenz der letzten<br />

Bourbonen Frankreichs) zu bewundern.<br />

Weiter durch Via Rastello,<br />

gelangen wir zur Piazza della Vittoria,<br />

die von der Kirche Sant Ignazio mit<br />

ihren charakterichen Zwiebeltürmen<br />

beherrscht wird, errichtet ab 1654<br />

von den Jesuiten und um die Mitte<br />

des XVIII Jhdts vollendet. In der<br />

nahen Piazza De Amicis kann man<br />

Palazzo Attems Petzenste<strong>in</strong> bewundern:<br />

nach e<strong>in</strong>em Plan Gorizianer<br />

Architekten Nicolo Pacassi erbaut, der<br />

auch an der Planung von Schloss<br />

Schönbrunn <strong>in</strong> Wien mitwirkte, stellt<br />

er e<strong>in</strong> beachtliches und repräsentatives<br />

Beispiel der Architektur von Gorizia<br />

im XVIII Jhdt dar. Weitere kostbare<br />

Werke von Pacassi s<strong>in</strong>d der<br />

Neptunsbrunnen (Piazza Vittoria)<br />

und Palazzo Attems Santa Croce (Sitz<br />

der Stadtverwaltung <strong>in</strong> Piazza<br />

Municipio). In der Synagoge (Via<br />

Ascoli) <strong>in</strong>nerhalb des ehemaligen städtischen<br />

Judengeme<strong>in</strong>de e<strong>in</strong>gerichtet,<br />

<strong>in</strong> dem ausserdem e<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>teressante<br />

Abteilung dem Philosophen Carlo<br />

Michelstädter aus Gorizia gewidmet<br />

ist. Nach Verlassen der Stadtmitte,<br />

entlang der baumgesäumten Viale XX<br />

Settembre stellt der weitläufige, herrliche<br />

Park der Villa Coron<strong>in</strong>i e<strong>in</strong>e<br />

angenehmen Rast im Grünen dar.<br />

Inmitten der bezaubernden<br />

Landschaft lädt die Villa aus dem XVI<br />

Jhdt, im vergangenen Jahrhunert<br />

restauriert und erweitert, dazu e<strong>in</strong>,<br />

das wertvolle Erbgut der Familie<br />

Coron<strong>in</strong>i Cronberg zu entdecken.<br />

SIGHTSEEING ROUTE<br />

T<br />

his route stars at the Castle –<br />

closed on Mondays –, that<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>ates the town and its<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>gs by its characteristic<br />

fortified town, that dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Middle Ages was the residence of the<br />

Counts of Gorizia. The castle after<br />

the destruction of the Great War,<br />

was extensively restored and rebuilt,<br />

lett<strong>in</strong>g the old structures of the XIII<br />

century Counts’ Palace<br />

and the XV century<br />

Prov<strong>in</strong>cial States Palace<br />

riemerge. The route cont<strong>in</strong>ues<br />

on the patrol parapets,<br />

from where visitors<br />

can enjoy a wonderful<br />

view. Cross<strong>in</strong>g the ancient<br />

town, surrounded by the<br />

austere XVI century<br />

bastions, there can be<br />

found the little Gothic<br />

Chiesa di Santo Spirito,<br />

the oldest <strong>in</strong> Gorizia.<br />

Nearby, there is the<br />

Museo della Grande<br />

Guerra, Moda, Arti<br />

Applicate, Collezione<br />

Archeologica (Case<br />

Dornberg and Tasso) and the Museo<br />

Etnografico (Casa Forment<strong>in</strong>i) – closed<br />

on Mondays. Go<strong>in</strong>g along Riva<br />

Castello that reaches to Piazza Cavour<br />

on which dom<strong>in</strong>ates the bell tower of<br />

the Duomo dei S.S. Ilario e Tiziano.<br />

The square is the heart of the historical<br />

centre, together with the adjacent<br />

Piazza S.Antonio, delimitated on one<br />

side by the large colonnade of the XVI<br />

century Palazzo Lantieri. Here stayed<br />

many dist<strong>in</strong>guished personalities such<br />

as: Casanova, Metastasio, Goldoni and<br />

Pope Pius VI and many artists who<br />

decorated its <strong>in</strong>terior (guided tours are<br />

organized). On the other side of the<br />

square there can be admired the beutiful<br />

XVIII century facade of Palazzo<br />

Strassoldo (residence of the last<br />

Borbons of France). Walk<strong>in</strong>g through<br />

Via Rastello that leads to Piazza della<br />

Vittoria, dom<strong>in</strong>ated by the Chiesa di S.<br />

Ignazio with its characteristic onionshaped<br />

domes, which the Jesuits started<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 1654 and f<strong>in</strong>ished <strong>in</strong><br />

the mid-XVIII century. In the vic<strong>in</strong>ities,<br />

on the Piazza De Amicis, Palazzo<br />

Nettuno <strong>in</strong> Piazza<br />

della Vittoria and<br />

Palazzo Attems S. Croce, which today<br />

is the seat of the town hall (Piazza del<br />

Municipio). The Synagogue, situated<br />

<strong>in</strong> via Ascoli <strong>in</strong>side the old Jewish ghetto,<br />

has been transformed <strong>in</strong>to the<br />

Museo della Comunicà Ebraica<br />

Goriziana, and it also conta<strong>in</strong>s an <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

section dedicated to the<br />

Gorizian philosopher Carlo<br />

Michelstaedter. Leav<strong>in</strong>g the centre of<br />

the town and follow<strong>in</strong>g the tree-l<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

Viale XX Settembre, a pleasant stop<br />

can be made <strong>in</strong> the large and beautiful<br />

Parco di Villa Coron<strong>in</strong>i.<br />
