Provenendo dal Viale Roma e varcata la soglia
della grande porta a mare si accede alla piazzetta
detta “delle erbe”, tradizionale punto di incontro
dei cervesi: a sinistra si nota la facciata della vecchia
pescheria, oggi sala mostre ed esposizioni.
Caratteristici, all’interno, i banchi di marmo sui
quali si vendeva il pesce.
Prima di oltrepassare l’ampio portico del Comune,
attraverso il quale si accede alla grande piazza
Garibaldi, a sinistra si può notare, cementata a
muro, la raccolta delle misure ufficiali cui i mercanti
dovevano attenersi e che provengono dalla
vecchia Cervia.
Una volta giunti sulla piazza principale non si può
sfuggire al fascino della sua architettura settecentesca
e della sua atmosfera salottiera, specie di
sera, che vi si tengano spettacoli o meno.
Monumenti
principali
Meritano una visita il palazzo comunale, dei primi
del ‘700 (particolare la torre dell’orologio e la
statua in cotto dell’Assunta), la cattedrale, dello
stesso periodo, con dipinti di Francesco e Barbara
Longhi, la Chiesa del Suffragio del 1722, che
conserva un crocifisso ligneo ed un organo del
Callido, la Chiesa di S. Antonio da Padova a cui
sono devoti i marinai del borgo (conserva, infatti,
interessanti ex voto molti dei quali ritraggono,
appunto, scene di mare) ed il magazzeno del sale
“torre” (l’altro è ancora inagibile), una sorta di
“cattedrale laica” i cui rossi mattoni trasudano
ancora il sale contenuto per secoli; oggi è un elegante
centro esposizioni.

Coming from Viale Roma and passing through the
gate opened towards the sea, you enter a small
square called ‚delle erbe‘ (‚herbs‘ square), where
Cervia people traditionally meet: on the left, you will
notice the facade of the old fish market, today used
as exhibition centre.
Inside it, the characteristic white marble stalls, where
fish used to be sold.
Before going through the wide portico of the Town
hall to enter Piazza Garibaldi, you may notice, on the
wall on the left, the official measurement standards
that had to be referred to in trade and which are
originally from the old town of Cervia.
Once in the main square, you will be struck by its
18th century architecture and its drawing-room like
atmosphere, especially in the evening, whether there
may be shows on or not.
main Monuments
Worth visiting: the Town Hall, dating from the
beginning of the 18th century with a clock tower
and the terracotta statue of the Assumption, the
cathedral, of the same period, with paintings by
Francesco and Barbara Longhi, the Chiesa del
Suffragio built in 1722, housing a wooden crucifix
and an organ by Callido, the church of S. Antonio da
Padova, worshipped by the fishermen of the village
(numerous votive offerings in this church depict sea
scenes), and the ‚Torre‘ salt warehouse (the other
one is still closed), which could be considered a sort
of ‚secular cathedral‘ which red bricks are still oozing
with the salt that has been contained in the place for
centuries and which is today used as an exhibition
centre.
