WILLKOMMEN - BIENVENUES
BIENVENIDoS
Congratulations for your choice! Here is a summary of
everything that this small, special town can offer. Cervia,
originally designed as a production centre for salt, is
today the fourth town in Italy for number of hotels: 391
(118 with swimming pool) for a total of 26,641 beds. The
tourism opportunities also include 4,161 flats for tourists
for a total of 17,119 beds, plus 5 camping grounds,
30 holiday homes and holiday camps. A wide range of
tourist and business services characterises Cervia: 241
restaurants and pizzerias, 188 cafés, 10 discos and dance
halls, many shops and boutiques that are a traditional
destination for strolls and shopping. With more than 9
kilometres of shores with fine sand and an extremely safe
sea, Cervia is particularly suited for family and children
holidays. 230 bathing establishments ensure first-rate
services and entertainment on the beach.
ITS FOUR SEA PEARLS
New Town of Cervia. Today a modern tourist destination,
it displays the treasures of its past, from the monumental
Magazzini del Sale (‚Salt Warehouses‘) and the St.
Michael‘s Tower to the distinctive town centre and the
salt-harvesters‘ houses built as walls to defend the
town. Also worth a visit, the refined theatre and the
characteristic fishing village. A stroll along the canal
harbour will prove interesting thanks to the lively fish
trade, with the fishermen attending to the most ancient of
activities. Every day, spectacular exhibitions, concerts and
often-peculiar events make these historical places alive.
Milano Marittima. This is the most glamorous
destination, with its numerous shops for famous
designers, exclusive beaches, and never-ending night
entertainment. Many sport and show business people
love to take a stroll in the town centre and hang out in
the fashionable clubs.
Centenary of the foundation of Milano Marittima
The new ‘garden city’ of Milano Marittima marks the
beginning of tourism in the area of Cervia, which
developed gradually around the Art Nouveau villas in the
pine woods. Even before its foundation in August 1912,
on June 1, 1911 the “Società Milano Marittima per lo
sviluppo della spiaggia di Cervia” (Milano Marittima
Society for the Development of Cervia Beach) was
founded. It provided an original development project
laying the basis for the growth of a place where tourist
residences would discreetly mix with the surrounding
nature without overpowering or spoiling it. It was a
modern holiday resort for the middle class of Lombardy
and it consisted in a series of cottages nestled in the lush
pine forest. On October 20, 1927 Cervia was recognized
by Ministerial Decree as a “Stazione di Cura, Soggiorno
e Turismo” (Treatment, Holiday and Tourism Resort),
also thanks to the contribution of Milano Marittima.
It was, in fact, in that year that the first hotels, camps
and catering businesses began to be established and
built alongside the villas set in the pine woods. In the
1930s, tourism started increasing at a higher rate, and
the area can be considered today as one of the most
famous seaside resorts across Italy and a sought after
tourist destination by young and show business people.
The history of Milano Marittima is remembered and
celebrated in the centenary celebration, which sees a rich
variety of events happening under the name of “Anello
del Pino Live 2011” and involving residents and tourists
alike. This festival will be held in Milano Marittima, and
it is intended to celebrate the origins of the place on
the first centenary of its foundation through theatrical
productions, performances by groups, demonstrations of
traditional handicrafts, tasting of typical local products
and events for children. The program also includes the
“Itinerario letterario del Centenario” (Literary Centennial
Trail), with a shuttle bus that will trace a route through
stops where actors will read passages focusing on the
figure of Giuseppe Palanti, the undisputed author of the
urban plan of the “Garden City”.
Pinarella and Tagliata are the ideal destinations for
families and for relaxing holidays. Their characteristic is
the long beach, which has been defined by the Blue Guide
by Legambiente (the most widespread environmental
NGO in Italy) and the Italian Touring Club as the „natural
pearl“ of the Adriatic Riviera. The pleasant strip of
pinewood running parallel to the beach offers shadow,
areas with picnic facilities and playgrounds for children.
Every year in Pinarella, in mid-March, the “Sagra della
Seppia” (‚cuttlefish festival‘) takes place. It is an important
event lasting for one week and it is characterised by the
traditional spring food of the Cervia area, which features
cuttlefish as the main ingredient. In addition, evening
markets and shows organised by the local tour operators
attract people throughout the summer. Also in Tagliata,
the local tour and business operators organize evening
entertainment and shows. Top athletes in different sports
come here as a base for their training camp.
10 august, St. Lawrence: a
dip in the sea worth seven
The celebration that the people from
Cervia love the most, together with the
Sea Wedding, is St. Lawrence’s, whose
night is known for the falling stars.
According to the legend, to bathe in
the sea on the 10 August is very good
for your health, for both people and
animals, and that it is worth seven
times more than in the other days. In
the past, all the peasant families of the
inland would take their animals to the
beach to make them bathe in the shallow
water so that they would be protected
from illnesses. The program for
the day is quite busy: Piazza Garibaldi,
the main square, hosts in the afternoon
a loud crowd waiting for the traditional
bingo game and, in the evening,
everybody meets on the beach to marvel
at the fireworks.
