Die Konzertfantasie über Themen aus Verdis Oper
„Rigoletto“ ist wohl die bekannteste Komposition des italienischen
Klarinettisten Luigi Bassi (1833‒1871). Zu recht ist
sie seit vielen Jahren fest im Standardrepertoire der Klarinettisten
verwurzelt und erfreut sich ebenso beim Publikum
größter Beliebtheit. Bassi, der selbst Soloklarinettist an der
Mailänder Scala war, vereint in seinen Opernfantasien die
lyrischen Qualitäten des Instruments mit hinreißender Virtuosität,
die Verdis Musik mehr als gerecht wird.
Bassis kompositorisches Schaffen konzentriert sich zwar
auf die Gattung der Opernfantasie - ebenso sind jedoch
pädagogische Werke, Klarinettenduos sowie ein Klarinettenkonzert
in italienischen Erstdrucken bzw. Bassis Handschrift
überliefert. Die vorliegende Ausgabe fußt auf dem
Erstdruck der Komposition von 1865, wir legen unserer
Ausgabe jedoch noch eine weitere, bislang unbekannte
Rigoletto-Adaption aus der Feder Luigi Bassis bei. Die einige
Jahre zuvor entstandene Introduktion und Quartett „Bella
figlia dell’amore” bringt - ebenso wie ihr Schwesterwerk - mit
raffinierter Themenverarbeitung und gekonnter klarinettistischer
Ornamentik eine bravouröse Opernatmosphäre ins
Konzerthaus.

The concert fantasy on motives from Verdi’s “Rigoletto“
by italian composer and clarinetist Luigi Bassi (1833‒1871),
is undoubtedly his most famous composition and has become
an integral part of the concert repertoire of clarinetists
world wide. It is popular with both musicians and audience.
Bassi, former principal clarinetist of La Scala in Milan,
combines lyrical qualities and ravishing virtuosity, matching
the phenomenon of Verdi’s music in a perfect way.
Though Bassi’s compositional output is focused on opera
fantasies, he also wrote a great deal of clarinet duos, scholarly
books as well as a clarinet concerto. All these works
have survived in manuscript form or first prints. The present
edition derives from the first print of 1865 and is completed
by another, yet unknown Rigoletto adaption by Bassi.
The introduction and quartet „Bella figlia dell’amore”, composed
a few years earlier, is combining the sophisticated
handling of themes with practical clarinet-like ornamentation,
transporting a brilliant opera atmosphere into the
concert hall.
