Prov<strong>in</strong>cia <strong>del</strong> <strong>Medio</strong> <strong>Campidano</strong>Sistema Turistico LocaleSard<strong>in</strong>ia - ItalyIl territorio <strong>del</strong> Sistema Turistico Locale <strong>del</strong> <strong>Medio</strong><strong>Campidano</strong> è situato nel<strong>la</strong> parte centro occidentale<strong>del</strong><strong>la</strong> Sardegna a breve distanza da Cagliari, capoluogo<strong>del</strong>l’iso<strong>la</strong>. Il paesaggio è straord<strong>in</strong>ariamente variegato,al<strong>la</strong> natura <strong>in</strong>contam<strong>in</strong>ata e alle acque cristall<strong>in</strong>e <strong>del</strong><strong>la</strong>Costa Verde si uniscono le estese dune di sabbia diPisc<strong>in</strong>as, le più alte d’Europa, e le vestigia storiche <strong>del</strong>learee m<strong>in</strong>erarie di Naracauli, Ingurtosu e Montevecchio,con i loro <strong>in</strong>sediamenti e siti di archeologia <strong>in</strong>dustrialedichiarati patrimonio <strong>del</strong>l’UNESCO. Poco più a sud sierge il massiccio <strong>del</strong> Monte L<strong>in</strong>as con i suoi boschi dilecci e tassi, le cascate più alte <strong>del</strong><strong>la</strong> Sardegna e numerosianimali endemici tra cui il cervo sardo e l’aqui<strong>la</strong>reale.Sul versante opposto ci sono gli altopiani basaltici <strong>del</strong><strong>la</strong>Giara di Siddi e quel<strong>la</strong> di Gesturi-Tuili-Setzu.Quest’ultima costituisce un’oasi naturalistica unica nelsuo genere, <strong>in</strong>teramente ricoperta da un bosco di macchiamediterranea ed abitata dai mitici cavall<strong>in</strong>i selvaticiche vivono liberi tra le sughere e piccoli stagni ricopertidi bianchi ranuncoli.Nell’<strong>in</strong>terno si <strong>in</strong>contra il dolce territorio coll<strong>in</strong>are <strong>del</strong><strong>la</strong>Marmil<strong>la</strong>, punteggiato da numerosi monumenti archeologiciquali domus de janas, nuraghi, tombe di giganti,siti fenicio-punici e vestigia di età romana e medioevale.Qui è possibile visitare <strong>la</strong> più alta espressione <strong>del</strong><strong>la</strong>cultura nuragica <strong>in</strong> Sardegna, rappresentata dal complessomegalitico di “Su Nuraxi” di Barum<strong>in</strong>i dichiaratopatrimonio <strong>del</strong>l’UNESCO.A pochi chilometri dal centro di Sardara, s<strong>in</strong> dall’antichitàerano frequentate le Aquae Neapolitane cioè lecalde sorgenti termali, i cui effetti curativi sono ancoraoggi sfruttati <strong>in</strong> due moderni Centri Termali.Nel corso <strong>del</strong> <strong>Medio</strong>evo il <strong>Medio</strong> <strong>Campidano</strong> ricopriva unimportante ruolo economico e una fondamentale funzionestrategica essendo posizionato tra i due Giudicati diCagliari e Arborea, restano <strong>del</strong> periodo i castelli diMonreale a Sardara, quello di Las P<strong>la</strong>ssas e il Castellofortificato di Sanluri, unico ancora <strong>in</strong>tegro nell’iso<strong>la</strong>, oggisede di importanti musei.I paesi sono caratterizzati da un’architettura urbanasapientemente preservata e valorizzata dove sono benvisibili le murature <strong>in</strong> “<strong>la</strong>diri”, costruite con mattoni dipaglia e fango, o <strong>in</strong> pietra, segni di una tradizione agropastoralee contad<strong>in</strong>a sempre viva nell’economia <strong>del</strong> territorio.Tra le vie dei centri abitati si scoprono preziosetestimonianze <strong>del</strong>l’architettura religiosa con pregevoliesempi di chiese romaniche e gotico-aragonese, checustodiscono importanti opere pittoriche <strong>del</strong> ‘500 comeil retablo <strong>del</strong> Maestro si Castelsardo a Tuili e quello dPietro Cavaro a Vil<strong>la</strong>mar. Le campagne conservano quasigelosamente le caratteristiche chiese campestri che sivivacizzano durante le feste religiose che segnano <strong>la</strong>cadenza <strong>del</strong>l’annata agraria.Il <strong>Medio</strong> <strong>Campidano</strong> è denom<strong>in</strong>ato <strong>la</strong> Prov<strong>in</strong>cia Verde perl’eccellenza dei suoi prodotti eno-gastronomici, come ilpane e i dolci, i formaggi ov<strong>in</strong>i e capr<strong>in</strong>i, l’olio di oliva, iv<strong>in</strong>i autoctoni, i legumi, il carciofo e lo zafferano. The <strong>la</strong>ndscapeis extraord<strong>in</strong>arily varied, with an unspoilt natural environment,the crystal-clear waters of the Costa Verdeand the extensive sand dunes at Pisc<strong>in</strong>as, the highest<strong>in</strong> Europe. There are historical rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> the m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gareas of Naracauli, Ingurtosu and Montevecchio,whose settlements and <strong>in</strong>dustrial archaeology areUNESCO world heritage sites. A little further southstands Mount L<strong>in</strong>as with holm-oak and yew forests,the highest waterfalls <strong>in</strong> Sard<strong>in</strong>ia and a wide variety ofwildlife, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Sard<strong>in</strong>ian deer and golden eagles.On the opposite side are the basalt p<strong>la</strong>teaux of theGiara di Siddi and Gesturi-Tuili-Setzu. The <strong>la</strong>tter is anatural oasis, the only one of its k<strong>in</strong>d, that is entirelycovered with Mediterranean scrub and is the habitat ofthe legendary wild horses that roam amongst the corkoaks and small pools covered with white buttercups.In the <strong>in</strong>terior, the gentle hillsides of Marmil<strong>la</strong> are dottedwith numerous archaeological monuments, suchas the Domus de Janas, nuraghs, the giants’ tombs,Phoenician and Punic sites and Roman and medievalrema<strong>in</strong>s. Here, the greatest expression of Sard<strong>in</strong>ia’snuraghic culture can be visited: the megalithic complex“Su Nuraxi” at Barum<strong>in</strong>i, also a UNESCO worldheritage site.At a few kilometres from the centre of Sardara, AquaeNeapolitane, or warm thermal spr<strong>in</strong>gs, have been frequenteds<strong>in</strong>ce antiquity and their curative propertiesare still used by two modern spa centres.Dur<strong>in</strong>g the Middle Ages, <strong>Medio</strong> <strong>Campidano</strong> p<strong>la</strong>yed animportant economic role and was an essential strategiclocation as it stood between the two giudicati ofCagliari and Arborea. Dat<strong>in</strong>g back to this period are thecastles of Monreale <strong>in</strong> Sardara, Las P<strong>la</strong>ssas, and thefortified castle <strong>in</strong> Sanluri, the is<strong>la</strong>nd’s only completecastle, which now houses important museums.The characteristic architecture of the towns has beenskilfully preserved and enhanced. The “<strong>la</strong>diri” wallsmade from straw bricks and mud or stone are stillclearly visible and are an <strong>in</strong>dication of the agricultura<strong>la</strong>nd sheep-breed<strong>in</strong>g tradition that is still p<strong>la</strong>ys an activepart <strong>in</strong> the economy of the territory. Along thestreets of the towns there is <strong>in</strong>valuable evidence ofreligious architecture with f<strong>in</strong>e examples ofRomanesque and Gothic-Aragonese churches whichconta<strong>in</strong> important 16th-century works of art, such asthe retable by si Castelsardo at Tuili and by PietroCavaro at Vil<strong>la</strong>mar. The countryside jealously protectsits characteristic rural churches which are enlivenedby the religious festivals that mark the seasons of theagricultural year.<strong>Medio</strong> <strong>Campidano</strong> is called the Green Prov<strong>in</strong>ce becauseof the excellence of its w<strong>in</strong>e and food products,such as bread and cakes, sheep and goat cheese, oliveoil, local w<strong>in</strong>es, pulses, artichokes and saffron.
