The wide ‘Cinquemiglia’ Karst plateau, integral part of the Major Plateaux area,is located between 1,250 e i 1,280 m.a.s.l.; exploited for millennia as a sheepgrazing and farming area, in winter the plateau turns into a huge white tablelandsuitable for any winter sport activity. Located on the southern edge of this plateauand protected to the west by the Pratello and by the Toppe del Tesoro, MountPratello skiing area is and ideal reference point for cross-country skiing and skitouring, being comprised within the widest ski district in Abruzzo, the Roccaraso,Rivisondoli and Pescocostanzo district. Here are 2 groomed cross-country skiingloops, the first, 15 km long is of medium difficulty, the second, 7 km, is easier.Food facilities and ski rental service are located close to trailhead (loops are onlygroomed during Christmas holidays). The ski touring and the snowshoe trail startfrom the surrounding area: the first is 6 km long, starting from the ‘Schiapparello’wood and climbing to the Aremogna plain; the second, of medium difficulty (7km), starts from the ‘Schiapparo’ wood and climbs to the Serra of MountParadiso (1,705 m). Worthy of mention for ski mountaineering fans: a routestarting from Aremogna (Heidi Refuge) and climbing eastwards towards the ridge(2,033m), a second route starting from Gravare and reaching Mount Greco anda third route starting from Mount Pratello parking lot and reaching Serra diRocca Chiarano or Passo dello Scalone.ABRUZZO ITALIA 17
