Thomas Heatherwick Studio's latest projectis a small seaside kiosk on the seafront promenade in the seasidetown of Littlehampton, West Sussex- The cafe, a singlestoreybuilding facing south, is designed to offer visitors respitefrom the heat and shelter in bad weather, often the case in theunpredictable British climate. For this design, Heatherwick wasinspired by the "raw beauty of this seaside town ". Devoid of anyquaintness, the East Beach Cafe resembles a piece of driftwoodwashed up on the beach and is designed to fit into the focal con-Thomas Heartherwick Studio, East Beach Cafe, Littlehamptontext. The shell of the building provides both its skin and structure(instead of the traditional method of one resting on the other).The primary structure of the building is a monocoque steelshell in which all parts act together as in the hull of a ship- Doeto its seaside location, the choice of materials played a key partin the design concept- To minimise the impact of the high saltcontent of the air on the building and reduce the natural degradationof all materials, Heatherwick opted for naturally finishedmaterials that respond well to the local environment. The mildsteel shell forming the outer skin will rust and gain character as itages, while an oil-based coating applied after the surface has "weathered" will help prolong the building's life.
