GEO 2 Gli Stati europei 5.2 Irlanda L'Irlanda (Éire in lingua irlandese, Ireland in lingua inglese), nota anche con il nome di Repubblica d'Irlanda, è uno stato membro dell'Unione Europea, costituito come repubblica indipendente e sovrana, che ricopre approssimativamente cinque sesti dell'omonima isola situata a nord-ovest della costa occidentale dell'Europa. È bagnata a ovest dall'Oceano Atlantico, a nord-est dal Canale del Nord. A est invece c'è il Mare d'Irlanda che si riconnette all'oceano a sud-ovest tramite il Canale di San Giorgio e il Mare Celtico. 130

L'isola d'Irlanda si estende per 82.458 km² dei quali cinque sesti appartengono all'Éire. Il centro della nazione è formato da paludi dello Shannon, con vaste distese di torba, usata per la combustione. Tra le città principali, la capitale Dublino nella costa orientale, Cork nel sud, Galway e Limerick nella costa occidentale, Waterford a sud-est.
