Funds and Tourism among<br />

the Local Council’s priorities<br />

A day care centre for the elderly, as part of Dar il-Madonna<br />

<strong>tal</strong>-<strong>Mellieħa</strong> residence for the elderly, will be opened at<br />

the end of May and final works by the central government<br />

together with the Local Council are currently underway.<br />

<strong>Mellieħa</strong> residents over the age of 60 will be able to attend<br />

the centre and the Local Council is urging people to express<br />

interest and apply for membership.<br />

Over the past months, the <strong>Mellieħa</strong> Local Council has<br />

submitted 14 applications for EU funds for several projects<br />

covering environmen<strong>tal</strong> matters as well as tourism, young<br />

people, culture, heritage and rural aspects.<br />

The Council hopes the proposed projects will be approved<br />

for funding for the benefit of the <strong>Mellieħa</strong> community. Last<br />

month, 16 young people travelled to Poland on an EU<br />

funded project and Polish young people will be coming over<br />

to <strong>Mellieħa</strong> in June.<br />

The Local Council´s work in the tourism sector has not<br />

yielded and in the past months, <strong>Mellieħa</strong> has attracted two<br />

projects linked with strong investment in the sector. In fact,<br />

the Hal Ferħ Complex in Għajn Tuffieħa and the extension<br />

of the RIU Seabank Hotel in <strong>Mellieħa</strong> Bay, will translate in a<br />

€75 million investment and some 400 new jobs.<br />

The <strong>Mellieħa</strong> Local Council has meanwhile continued its<br />

advertising campaign abroad. The Malta Tourism Authority<br />

supported by the <strong>Mellieħa</strong> Local Council has also submitted<br />

its application for <strong>Mellieħa</strong> Bay to be registered as a Blue<br />

Flag Beach, in 2011 - a certificate noting the beach´s safety<br />

and cleanliness features.<br />

Countryside also tops the Local Council’s priorities and a<br />

number of heritage trails in Imġiebaħ, Selmun, and Manikata<br />

will be identified. This will add value to the package of<br />

activities and events being offered by our locality, which has<br />

been named as a Destination of Excellence by the EU.<br />

Over the coming months, the Local Council will be<br />

consolidating its commitment for <strong>Mellieħa</strong> to be regarded<br />

as a destination for all seasons. This work will continue<br />

to ensure a better environment and standard of living for<br />

<strong>Mellieħa</strong> residents with the efforts of all.<br />

The Local Council’s success is the success of the <strong>Mellieħa</strong><br />

community in general.<br />

<strong>Mellieħa</strong> Local Council, by whose collaboration and support<br />

this scheme is being re-launched.<br />

This is one of the various initiatives that the Għaqda takes,<br />

in very close collaboration with the <strong>Mellieħa</strong> Local Council.<br />

Regular meetings are being held and as one can see, during<br />

the past two years, the Għaqda gave its full support in the<br />

Annual event of Milied Mellieħi and carried out various cleaning<br />

campaigns around the estate, amongst which, one that surely<br />

prevails is the protection of il-Wied ta’ Santa Maria.<br />

Some months back, Dr. Patiniott requested a meeting with<br />

myself and Ms Therese Sciberras, the Police Inspector<br />

responsible for the <strong>Mellieħa</strong> area. One must bear in mind that<br />

such a scheme has always been one of the Local Council’s<br />

priorities. During the 3rd. term of this Council, between the<br />

years 1999 and 2002, Mr. Robert Cutajar, the present Mayor,<br />

amongst other responsibilities assigned to him, had that for<br />

the protection of the community. It was then, when the first<br />

scheme was launched and with the help of various volunteers<br />

this was extended to Santa Maria Estate, <strong>Mellieħa</strong> Heights and<br />

Ta’ Pennellu area. There were many a time that this scheme<br />

gave good results in preventing crime in our locality.<br />

During the course of our discussions we always kept in mind<br />

that this must be a scheme aimed towards preventing crime<br />

and not at being watchdogs amongst ourselves. During the<br />

course of this presentation one could appreciate the laborious<br />

tasks incurred. I encourage everybody to give the full support<br />

to such an initiative that will surely benefit all residents alike.<br />

We all appreciate the valuable work done by the Police, but<br />

we also know that they cannot be present everywhere at all<br />

times. The co-operation and collaboration of the public is of<br />

vi<strong>tal</strong> importance in fighting crime. It is in the citizens’ own<br />

interest to support such a scheme. By preventing crime in our<br />

neighbourhood we will be enhancing our area. Our home is<br />

our territory, a place we all want to protect from any intrusion.<br />

Let us all extend this protection to our neighbourhood and in a<br />

team spirit make the estate a safe and secure place to live in.<br />

Here I must mention the valuable contribution of Mr. Bernard<br />

Blagg and Mr. Willem Houtzager, who together with myself and<br />

personnel from the Transport Authority are working towards<br />

an estate with safer roads, both for pedestrians and motorists<br />

alike. Let us work towards a scheme that does not punish the<br />

many law-abiding residents and benefit the few offenders.<br />

Let us all work towards the success of such a scheme with the<br />

aim of extending it to other areas around <strong>Mellieħa</strong>.<br />
