Funds and Tourism among
the Local Council’s priorities
A day care centre for the elderly, as part of Dar il-Madonna
tal-Mellieħa residence for the elderly, will be opened at
the end of May and final works by the central government
together with the Local Council are currently underway.
Mellieħa residents over the age of 60 will be able to attend
the centre and the Local Council is urging people to express
interest and apply for membership.
Over the past months, the Mellieħa Local Council has
submitted 14 applications for EU funds for several projects
covering environmental matters as well as tourism, young
people, culture, heritage and rural aspects.
The Council hopes the proposed projects will be approved
for funding for the benefit of the Mellieħa community. Last
month, 16 young people travelled to Poland on an EU
funded project and Polish young people will be coming over
to Mellieħa in June.
The Local Council´s work in the tourism sector has not
yielded and in the past months, Mellieħa has attracted two
projects linked with strong investment in the sector. In fact,
the Hal Ferħ Complex in Għajn Tuffieħa and the extension
of the RIU Seabank Hotel in Mellieħa Bay, will translate in a
€75 million investment and some 400 new jobs.
The Mellieħa Local Council has meanwhile continued its
advertising campaign abroad. The Malta Tourism Authority
supported by the Mellieħa Local Council has also submitted
its application for Mellieħa Bay to be registered as a Blue
Flag Beach, in 2011 - a certificate noting the beach´s safety
and cleanliness features.
Countryside also tops the Local Council’s priorities and a
number of heritage trails in Imġiebaħ, Selmun, and Manikata
will be identified. This will add value to the package of
activities and events being offered by our locality, which has
been named as a Destination of Excellence by the EU.
Over the coming months, the Local Council will be
consolidating its commitment for Mellieħa to be regarded
as a destination for all seasons. This work will continue
to ensure a better environment and standard of living for
Mellieħa residents with the efforts of all.
The Local Council’s success is the success of the Mellieħa
community in general.

Mellieħa Local Council, by whose collaboration and support
this scheme is being re-launched.
This is one of the various initiatives that the Għaqda takes,
in very close collaboration with the Mellieħa Local Council.
Regular meetings are being held and as one can see, during
the past two years, the Għaqda gave its full support in the
Annual event of Milied Mellieħi and carried out various cleaning
campaigns around the estate, amongst which, one that surely
prevails is the protection of il-Wied ta’ Santa Maria.
Some months back, Dr. Patiniott requested a meeting with
myself and Ms Therese Sciberras, the Police Inspector
responsible for the Mellieħa area. One must bear in mind that
such a scheme has always been one of the Local Council’s
priorities. During the 3rd. term of this Council, between the
years 1999 and 2002, Mr. Robert Cutajar, the present Mayor,
amongst other responsibilities assigned to him, had that for
the protection of the community. It was then, when the first
scheme was launched and with the help of various volunteers
this was extended to Santa Maria Estate, Mellieħa Heights and
Ta’ Pennellu area. There were many a time that this scheme
gave good results in preventing crime in our locality.
During the course of our discussions we always kept in mind
that this must be a scheme aimed towards preventing crime
and not at being watchdogs amongst ourselves. During the
course of this presentation one could appreciate the laborious
tasks incurred. I encourage everybody to give the full support
to such an initiative that will surely benefit all residents alike.
We all appreciate the valuable work done by the Police, but
we also know that they cannot be present everywhere at all
times. The co-operation and collaboration of the public is of
vital importance in fighting crime. It is in the citizens’ own
interest to support such a scheme. By preventing crime in our
neighbourhood we will be enhancing our area. Our home is
our territory, a place we all want to protect from any intrusion.
Let us all extend this protection to our neighbourhood and in a
team spirit make the estate a safe and secure place to live in.
Here I must mention the valuable contribution of Mr. Bernard
Blagg and Mr. Willem Houtzager, who together with myself and
personnel from the Transport Authority are working towards
an estate with safer roads, both for pedestrians and motorists
alike. Let us work towards a scheme that does not punish the
many law-abiding residents and benefit the few offenders.
Let us all work towards the success of such a scheme with the
aim of extending it to other areas around Mellieħa.
