Family, Environment, EU Funds and Tourism among the Local
Council’s priorities
The family, EU funds, tourism and the environment were the local council’s main focus over the past months.
Works on the family park, which will include a recreational area, in Selmun have started in the past months. Rubble walls will be
built and 300 trees will be planted in a bid to retain the rural aspect. In the meantime, the park will include sports facilities which
so far are new to Mellieħa, such as an athletics track, a cycling course, as well as a multipurpose court. This may be used as a
basketball, netball and volleyball court.
The Mellieħa Local Council is also awaiting the green light from the authorities to start constructing a new playground in Mellieħa
Heights.
The Dutch Ambassador visit
to Mellieħa Laetitia Lippits
On 2 March 2010 the Ambassador of the Netherlands, Rob
Gabriëlse and I, Laetitia Lippits, Deputy Head of Mission,
visited Mellieħa at the invitation of Robert Cutajar, Mayor of
Mellieħa. In the morning we were welcomed at the Mellieħa
Local Council office by Robert Cutajar. In his introduction
he spoke of the locality of Mellieħa, its unique heritage, the
people, events and activities. We were informed of places of
interest worth visiting, like historical attractions and natural
sites. After a nice cup of coffee we left for a guided tour to
the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa and the World War
II Shelters. The next visit was to the Valley of Wied Għajn
Żejtuna at Santa Marija Estate, by chance not far from where
I reside. The chairman of the Association of Residents,
Sammy Vella, showed us around and explained about the
ongoing project. The last visit was to the project Koperattiva
Rurali Manikata, the agricultural hub of Mellieħa. From that
place you have a beautiful view overlooking the valley, large
stretches of soil bordered by rubble walls. We were offered
a delicious lunch and I bought some fine products produced
by the Koperattiva. At the end the Ambassador planted a
tree (picture) and thanked everybody for their hospitality.
Once again we want to thank everybody who made this day
a success and I can say that we were impressed by the
opportunities Mellieħa has to offer.
