5StarWines - the Book 2021

The emergency caused by Covid-19 and the lockdown that resulted from it have
profoundly changed many aspects of our lives and the way we work. Operating
remotely has become something much more common for millions of people and even
the world of wine and wine competitions has had to adapt. This year 5StarWines – the
Book took the form of an “agile edition”, which involved a very laborious organizational
effort. Only a few judges, a delegation of Assoenologists and three members of the “onsite
commission”, including myself, took part in person in the tastings held at the Verona
headquarters. All the others tasted and evaluated remotely, receiving the samples at
their premises, most of them abroad.
As well as demonstrating how to adapt to the needs of our times, the “Agile” mode
introduced, for the first time, a new system for carrying out a complex tasting in all its
forms, first and foremost dictated by the involvement of dozens of people in various
countries around the world and which involved the evaluation of over two thousand
samples.
All the wines that were nominated for a score of 90/100 and above were then reevaluated
by the special commission in order to guarantee all the wines included in the
book that you have in your hands at least two assessments. The result, thanks to an
uncommon organizational effort, was prodigious.
