Capo Mannu and Castelsardo was required to stop off at Alghero to pay
the fishing rights. The city retained this privilege over subsequent centuries,
but foreigners actually ended up benefiting from it to a greater extent
than the local people did. In the late 18th century, coral fishing in Sardinia
was thrown into crisis following the discovery of African coral reefs,
but in the 19th century there was a marked upturn, with around 300 coral-fishing
boats regularly using the port. By the 20th century, coral fishing
was once again on the decline, but even more significantly a major depletion
of the resources was noted, attributable to the use of trawlers. In
1979, this practice was declared illegal, and since then Sardinia Region
has governed the harvesting of coral, with annual licences being granted
to professional fishermen, and strict regulations on the fishing periods
and the quantities of coral that may be caught.
While Alghero can boast ancient fishing traditions, the working of coral
is a relatively new phenomenon. Indeed, it was only in 1952, thanks to
the initiative shown by Filippo Figari and Verdina Pensè, that a tradition of
coral-crafting began to be established. A Coral School (Scuola del Corallo)
was duly established, which until the 2000s nurtured the talent of
many of the artisans and artists operating in the city.
Today, Alghero protects its “red gold” and views it as a vital element of the
local identity and culture. The city has its own Coral Museum (Museo del
Corallo) and has created a Quality Mark for the coral worked here.
altretant antic lo treball artijanal local d’aqueix preciós element. Solament
