Carbon Capture (CO 2 -Abscheidung) wird daher für viele Betriebe unumgänglich sein, um den Übergang in das Zero-Emission-Zeitalter zu gestalten. Auf die Investitionskosten für entsprechende Abscheideanlagen hat die Werkstoffwahl für die Einbauten der chemischen Abgaswäscher entscheidenden Einfluss. Technologien zur nasschemischen CO 2 -Abscheidung wie die Amin-Wäsche oder die alkalische Wäsche nutzen meist Edelstahlpackungen. Die verwendeten strukturierten Packungen könnten aber zum Engpass werden, wenn Carbon Capture im großen Maßstab eingesetzt wird. Und die Stähle sind teuer: Rund ein Drittel der Kosten für eine CO 2 -Abscheideanlage entfallen auf die metallischen Packungen. Hier bieten Thermoplaste wie Polypropylen (PP) ein erhebliches Einsparpotenzial. Zur direkten CO 2 -Abscheidung (Direct Air Carbon Capture, kurz DAC) mittels Absorption werden strukturierte Packungen aus Kunststoffen immer häufiger in Großanlagen eingesetzt. Strukturierte PP-Packungen wie die für den Stoffaustausch optimierten Massdek-Packungen erreichen vergleichbare Abscheidegrade wie metallische, kosten aber nur etwa die Hälfte. Die Packungen sind in einem weiten Temperaturbereich einsetzbar, widerstehen Umwelteinflüssen, sind resistent gegen die zur Abluftreinigung verwendeten Chemikalien und können brandhemmend ausgeführt werden. Polypropylen lässt sich außerdem leicht und hoch automatisiert verarbeiten. Bei einem steigenden Bedarf an Packungen könnten also schnell Fertigungskapazitäten aufgebaut werden. Prepared annually by ACC’s Economics and Statistics Department, the Guide to the Business of Chemistry divides the U.S. chemical industry into more than 30 categories of production, ranging from inorganic chemicals to plastic resins, adhesives and sealants to oilfield chemicals, and fertilizers to consumer products.
